I have been in and out of Thailand for 5 years now. Prior to leaving Hong Kong and moving to Thailand I had taken about 50+ trips to Thailand. So many that I just stopped counting because I knew I would move here eventually to sort this place out on my own terms. So between running the bar, going to Thai school, and trying to stay sane I tend to keep myself pretty busy. Add to that the blog, the book project and sleep I am probably the busiest I have ever been but enjoying my life more than I ever have in the past.
Why do I bring all this up? Bangkok is like an onion even though we
all refer to it as the Big Mango and as u know an onion has many layers
and I find it my duty to try and peel back more of the layers the
longer I stay here and see what this place has in store for those who
are willing and able to get off the Farang beaten path.
What I mean by this is that Bangkok has more than the Sukhumvit area
to explore but you have to prepare yourself for a much different
experience. First off - you are not just going to walk into a place,
"connect" and go home. That pretty much happens only in the Nana,
Patpong, Soi 22, Soi 33, Soi Cowboy and the various known freelancer
spots. I sometimes refer to these areas as the ICC. Please - I mean no
offence by this at all so make sure none is taken. ICC stands for the
Isaan Cultural Centers. Hopefully you can sort this out on your own.
Better yet learn how to say it in Thai and watch the girls laugh their
asses off a bit. So to be clear - ICC like places are where u go to
have fun, drink and most likely pull but not always but if you want to
pull this is where it will happen without much trouble at all.
Then there are other parts of town where u might go party that are
just clubs frequented by Thais and foreigners like Qba, Bed or CM2
under the Novotel in Siam Square. This being Thailand always means that
u might be able to pull there as well but the approach might be much
different and may take longer than one night but there are always ways.
Let’s face it - girls are everywhere and of many nationalities - get to
now any of them over time and you can find yourself enjoying each other
to some greater extent. There may also be no transaction involved at
all but this may be more trouble than it is worth given she might want
to call u back, see u again or whatever. My point is that there is more
out there than just pay for play.
So what I would like to explore more is not so much the local
Sukhumvit mixed club scene but the more Thai focused scenes around
Ratchada, Petchburi, and RCA. I am just started to get into this a
little more and although it is not as simple - I am enjoying the
contrasts and the game. We all know what the Game is right?
more soon….
Yes I do work in the UK. Yes I need to get off the beaten track of the farang when in Bangkok!
So I’ve done Patpong(Way too commercial & mucky),
Soi Cowboy (Quite alright), & my “Spritual Home” of Nana.
