d - post was written in august 2006. was just in penang and every cab trys to rips you off so my opinion of taxi drivers will not be changing. The meter is for the customer and they should use it. It is widely known that a major tourist deterrent to Malaysia is the lack of taxi meters. Thailand figured this out sometime back.

Starbucks WIFI is free in Malaysia? If so it would be the only place in the world where it is free.

I would imagine things along the wifi line have gotten better since it has been a year. I found tons of free WIFI this last trip to Penang.

@Divin: Which 'top hotels' in particular? I normally stay in the Shangri La or Pan Pacific and the health clubs there offer none of this.

I think you post is slightly dated, given that Starbucks WIFI is free and readily available throughout Malaysia since at least 2005.
The TM card is for GPRS and allows nationwide connection anywhere at about 150

Also surprised about your taxi experience. Locals and expats simply flag down the cab and ask how much, which almost always is about the same it would cost if the cab used the meter. Increaingly they actually do use the meter in KL, but less so in other areas. This is not because they want to cheat the fare, but because they cheat either their boss, or tax, or both.

When you are after 'a good time', check out the fitness centers and saunas in top hotels that are frequented by business travellers. Any colour, race and preference, as well as port of origin...
Try a long-time foursome with a Chinese, Indonesian and Russian for a life-changing experience. The next morning I was considering to go and marry, because I knew that I would never possibly experience anything remotely similar.

KL has its flaws, but like many things in Malaysia, it's unbeatable for insiders. And we all like that tourists don't get it, because they'll only drive up prices ;-)

I figure we all would have done the same thing - the only difference is I am willing to admit it. All in the name of good copy.
