The Pattaya Ghost - Issue #6: Is P4P Worth Dying For?

Issue #1 :: Issue #2 :: Issue #3 :: Issue #4 :: Issue #5

Pattaya Ghost Blog

For more than 40 years Western men have flocked to Pattaya for “rest & relaxation” feeling that the rules governing Farangland, didn’t apply here. Prostitution, while technically illegal, was accepted and even encouraged. And it was safe. The drugs, crime and violence that surrounded the sex trade in the rest of the world weren’t a problem. Guys called it “Fantasyland” and, in many ways, it was.

But fantasy has given way to grim reality. The massive expansion of Pattaya’s sex industry in recent years has led to an explosion of crime, violence and drug abuse that increasingly victimizes Western tourists and ex-pats active in the P4P scene.

DutKillers.jpgThat point was brought home again this week with the brutal killing of 63-year-old Martinus Jochems, a Dutch ex-pat who was found stabbed through the neck, burned and padlocked in his bungalow from the outside. Despite initially speculating that the case might be a suicide, Pattaya police quickly arrested two women from a nearby beer bar who admitted to killing Jochems because he took one women’s mobile phone and motorbike key to try and make her give up working in the bar and stay with him.

The crime would be horrific enough on its own, but, sadly, it’s just one of a lengthening string of murders, assaults and robberies being inflicted upon foreigners and Thais alike in Pattaya. Skyrocketing inflation, a worsening economy and drug addiction are behind many of the bag snatches and necklace grabs, but the victims of the most violent attacks all seem to share one thing in common: P4P.

  • On Wednesday, 59-year-old Tony Hanscomb was stabbed in the abdomen by a burgler he caught in the act. The attacker, who Hanscomb managed to stab twice while trying to escape, turned out to be a friend of the gay British man’s rent-a-boy.
  • On July 1, a 23-year-old Thai woman bystander was shot during a dispute between two Thai men over dealings at a Sunee Plaza bar.
  • Ten days prior to that, a 55-year-old German tourist was beaten and robbed on Beach Road by a ladyboy he agreed to go back to his hotel with.
  • On June 8, 59-year-old Edward Davies was found dumped on the side of a central Pattaya soi after being drugged and robbed while drinking at a Pattaya beer bar.
  • On June 1, another farang was beaten by a group of Thais at a beer bar after he got into a domestic dispute with his Thai wife.

And those are just cases from the past six weeks. Look back farther and you’ll find countless more reports, including one last summer where an American man was bludgeoned to death on Pattaya Beach by a streetwalker and her pimp boyfriend.

Not all the crime can be so directly connected to the P4P scene, of course. The media each week reports burglaries and home invasions of well-stocked farang households by drug addicts in need of cash. But no one can deny that the Pattaya’s sex industry fuels the drug trade and, without it, Pattaya would be a much safer place.

So what’s being done? Very little, actually. Pattaya’s police force is woefully undermanned. There are fewer than 500 full-time officers for a city that, during high season, can have up to 1 million residents and tourists. The force is supplemented by police volunteers, but the program has been more of an embarrassment to the city than good, with many Thai volunteers using the badge and gun to launch their own mini crime sprees. City police love to make big deals of busts netting fewer than three dozen yaba tablets in a “war on drugs” that’s no more effective here than in the West.

The best policy for farangs making Pattaya their holiday destination or even their home is to realize Fun Town is no longer Fantasyland and that, if you’re not careful, the price for P4P can be a lot higher than what you paid for the barfine.

Nightlife News Roundup

It’s been a very quiet news month for Pattaya’s nightlife. The bars are doing pretty much the same trade as in late June, but the whole town has the feeling like it’s simply biding its time (and crossing its fingers) for high season.

rwalk.jpgRain hasn’t helped. The heavens opened up early in the evening several nights this past week and, one night, the rain never abated. Bar owners hate early rain, as it not only dissuades guys from going out, but many of the working girls simply choose to stay home. Late rain, on the other hand, keeps punters in the bars longer.

The flip side to the rainy days is that the dry days seem to do very well. On Monday, traditionally a very slow night, nearly everywhere was rocking. Happy a Go Go, New Living Dolls One and Casanovy Agogo were all full. X-Zone A Go Go, in Covent Garden, has seen good crowds all month due to their new 2-for-1 drink promotion. Living Dolls Showcase and Angelwith still pack them in for the shows. But those successes are being offset by more than a few struggling bars.

  • The Smell of Desperation Is Peppermint – I’ve reported previously how badly Peppermint Palace has been doing this low season. For inexplicable reasons, a bar that has always been one of the busiest on Walking Street has really lost its following. Now, in a move that smacks of desperation, Peppermint has resorted to lesbian shows to try to bring in the punters. It’s a huge departure for a bar whose stock in trade was simply putting up large numbers of scantily clad dancing girls.
  • Tiger Balm for Low Season – The French group behind Walking Street’s Shark/Tiger complex and the Mandarin go-go/short-time bar on Soi 6 are making what looks like a last-ditch efforts to survive low season. Management, which also owns Bangkok’s Mandarin bars, refitted and briefly reopened Tiger Club upstairs on Soi Diamond as a hybrid coyote-go-go bar. The former table dancing club was stripped of its stylish all-white décor and just a couple weeks later was shuttered again. Girls were then moved to the Tiger Lounge and the format was changed from straight up (and unpopulated) coyote bar to sexy (and revealing) lingerie club. Meanwhile, on Soi 6, preparations are underway to refit Mandarin. But considering it already was a well-appointed lounge, it’s unclear how any redecorating is going to change things.
  • A Rock Legend Returns — Thailand rock music legend Lam Morrison will return to Pattaya’s The Blues Factory after a 1-year run at his own namesake night club, which is now for sale. Morrison officially left Lam Morrison’s Rock Bar July 1 and is taking some time off before making his return in early August to Blues Factory, where he performed from 2002 to 2007. Morrison, Thailand’s most-famous rock musician, left Blues Factory last year after reportedly being given a 50% share in Rock Bar on Soi Marine Plaza in return for his nightly services there. The move was seen as a huge blow to Blues Factory on nearby Soi Lucky Star, but it turned out that Blues Factory thrived while the Rock Bar foundered.
  • Smoking Ban Finally Bites – While Walking Street bars are being allowed to basically ignore Thailand’s smoking ban, bars outside the established nightlife zone are not. The Boys in Brown reportedly slapped 20,000-baht fines on three unnamed bars on Pattaya’s “Darkside” and hit their puffing patrons for 2,000 fines each earlier this month. Then, several days later, police visited the Bobby Arms bar, also on the east side of Sukhumvit Road, and got the owner there for 20K and a number of the patrons for 2,000 baht each. This, of course, follows police raids in June that resulted in six Darkside bars getting closed down for 30 days each for staying open past midnight.

Finally, if you’re thinking of coming to Pattaya, keep in mind bars here will be closed for Buddhist holidays Thursday and, most likely, Friday. Other than that, you’ll find a town hungry for your baht. Despite all the stories about it being slow, Pattaya is still a fun town and there are more than enough female distractions to occupy a couple of days and nights here.

I’ve always been too much of a coward to go there, and nothing in your (very fine) piece makes me any less scared. It’s not the Thais who scare me, it’s the fresh-out-of-jail Brits with no necks and extreme tattoos. Why is it so hard to avoid their eye? Pattaya seems like a trouble magnet, and I’ve had enough of that. My whoring days are put on hold indefinitely anyway, so I’m unlikely to go there for the sea breezes and ice cream. I got similar vibes in Phuket, although the ex-cons there mostly have yachts.

Pattaya is not as dangerous as this post could let to believe. As you can read, most stories involved locals, not only involved in the P4P but also having Thai wives or messing up with Thai guys.

What is true in Thailand is even more true in Pattaya: don’t mess with Thai guys if you have no back-up. And don’t mess with bar girls, whatever your back-up :)

The Thai P4P industry is built on deep denial(they are not really hookers, it is not all about money, mine is different, etc.) This extends to the false sense of security many foreigners feel here in Thailand.

All of the numbers - violent crime statistics, various surveys on “peacefulness” - prove out that this is a violent place. Pattaya attracts the roughest of the visitors and locals for sex and boozing and is a focus of this violence. People who want to think otherwise are foolish and take risks with their well-being.

Clear, blunt, unvarnished, and well written to boot. A welcome counterpoint to the kind of self-absorbed prattle and half-literate crapola that is generally all one reads online about Pattaya.

Maybe you should go to Pattaya in your late 50s
3 of the mentioned crimes were against dudes heading towards 60 with whore wives.

I totally agree with Pants ELK. I am not a high minded righteous person but I would be happy to see Pattaya sink into the sea. The whole place is a massive shit hole. It seemed to be up N coming for a few years at the turn of the century but it’s turned into a Russian Pimp, Golden Triangle Yabba infestation zone. The girls are getting fatter older and more infected, the crowd more simian and the ocean ever more polluted. No thanks.

pg - pretty daring writing something about dissing your own backyard but u make some solid points. THis type of stuff will only have the powers that be continue their P4P cleanup quest.

pe - agree but for some reason the place still attracts me from time to time. My only run ins with farangs have all been in pattaya for the most part. bummer.

prof - I dont see Thailand as a violent place but I would guess that there are more issues in Pattaya than there are on bkk but not sure where to get some solid stats on that.

rub - I think you are overextending it a bit but yeah - sometimes Pattaya feels like the armpit of the joint but that is why it gets away with all the stuff it does. It goes late, it is more nude and a little more crazy. It loses any of that and I see no point in going. beaches, sun and so on are better had elsewhere.

I like how #6 starts with death and destruction but concludes with the almost whimsical notion that “Pattaya is still a fun town.”

    Nice juxtaposition that.

Furthermore, let’s not let this recent Pattaya death go unnoticed.

    (pattayamail.com)

    Dutchman found dead in apartment

An elderly Dutchman ended his life in an apartment room by covering his head with a plastic bag and then inserting a rubber hose under the bag, with the other end connected to a gas outlet.

(His “wife” said) her husband was an architect in his hometown, and he had resigned from his work to live in Pattaya City approximately 20 years ago

Recently her husband had serious worries, because his money had run out.

I’m pretty sure people have been talking about about crime, drugs, vice and pollution in Pattaya for nearly 20 years. The guide books to Thailand then were very critical of it. I guess before, when it was just just an RnR spot for GIs on leave from Vietnam it was a haven of peace tranquality and clean living. If anybody has suggestions for a better place to go in Asis I would welcome any suggestions. The North of Thailand I find so dull. Bangkok closes too early. Cambodia is too vanilla for sex. Indonesia is too muslim..I mean what is a guy to do?

I’m with PE on this one. I have never been to Pattaya and have no desire to go. It’s not that I’m scared but why would I want to go someplace that’s got that kind of vibe to it? And really, what does Pattaya have to offer:

    1. Naughty nightlife - I’m more than happy with what’s on tap in BKK, Phuket, or several other places I might venture out to.

    2. Cheaper prices - Is it really worth it to save 50 baht on a drink or 500 baht on a LT? Not to me.

    3. Beaches - They suck.

I have mates who are constantly trying to get me to go down to Pattaya with them but it just has no appeal.

@PE — I’ve never really seen it to be the case that the farangs are the ones you have to worry about. The old adage “a good night out is a fight and a pint” really doesn’t apply here.

@Suk — I do admit that much of the violence is directed against gays by their boy toys. I live in a very gay buidling and our lobby is wallpapered with WANTED posters of spiky-haired, effeminate yet very dangerous yaba’d out boys that may, or may not, actually be gay who have beaten or robbed or both some of ther crusty old fudgepacker residents of my building.

@Sandman — Yes, that was the one thing I worried about writing this: It’s been going on for a while. But, after 5 years here, it does feel like it’s getting much worse over the past year. The drug problem here is fueling the entire problem, much as crack did in Washington D.C. back at the turn of the 90s.

@YP — Penfold, you wanna get together for a beer at Jenny’s? E-mail me. TheGhost@PattayaGhost.com.

@ Billy — Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

I think it is easy to tear into Pattaya based on a post like this but for me living in bkk - pattaya is a great escape. 2 days - 3 if I am pushing it is tops. I don’t go because it is cheaper since for the most part it is not. I mean I have to pay to get there and find a place to stay. Plus the 2 -3 days I am there I will party nonstop - so thus costing me more than if I stayed home.

What I like about it? The sheer number of gogos with nudity. The amount of girls that have never seen me. The fact that it goes all night or at the very least much later than bkk. It is also a great place for a group of guys who live in bkk to go for a party or a good escape.

    Smitty-

    Here is a starting point

    http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_mur_percap-crime-murders-per-capita

According to these statistics, the murder rate in Thailand is double that of the US and almost six times the rate in Canada or the UK.

People “feel safe” in Thailand like people “feel lucky” in casinos. The probabilities do not support such warm feelings. Of course, it helps that most visitors can’t understand the local TV news or read the local newspapers and the English-language press here tries to steer away from coverage of crime.

Professor According to your link Afghanistan and Iraq murder rates don’t even get a mention in the top 62 countries. So shooting up wedding parties and blowing up police stations and markets don’t count as murder. Must be a couple of the safest places in the world for a holiday, except the P4P scene is probably limited to camels.

professor - I can’t find anything on your link to show the crimes against foreigners but my guess is that for murders it is really low since whenever this happens it is huge news here. As an american in america I would say turning down a wrong street in chicago is always going to be more dangerous than just about anything I could do here providing I am not being stupid.

I reckon living here is similar to the 1 year I spent in the worst part of the tenderloin in SF. I saw people getting shot, beat up, mauled and just day to day general depravity. Have never seen anything like that here. When I did see stuff in the loin I just looked away and kept walking. I found they were preying on each other and generally did not care about what the outsider thought. So I never felt unsafe even thought\ I was in a very unsafe area.

The thais, for the most part, are not here to harm me nor I them. So I think in general I am pretty safe here but there are circumstances where that could change but I think people choose to put themselves in those circumstances.

Smitty- quite true and I am not too sure where one could find data on crime against foreigners.

If you stand in front of a university class here in Bangkok (at a university for the offspring of the well-healed), foreign students would uniformly state that they think Bangkok is safe. The Thai kids will just shake their heads in disbelief at that perception.

I think what I want to say is that most foreigners have no context of the amount of violent crime around them. If one were to read the papers and watch the news one might end up with a different sense of things.

A young woman was caught up in a fight between rival school gangs in front of the 7 Eleven near my home recently. Just happening upon the scene, she was killed in the dispute. I saw nothing about it in the English language press.

One of my buddies who works in the embassy here sees a lot of the local numbers and stuff from Interpol and others. He says the numbers are a rude awakening. Again, how much of it affects us is a good question.

Unfortunately, we have to rely on our perception of how safe we are here and most people want to feel safe, so they assume that perception. Despite this, I have heard of some who dip their bodies into raw sewage prior to the long walk home - an unnecessary step I would suggest.

I agree on one level, Professor. I think a lot more violent crime goes on in Thailand than people perceive. In a way I think this is a good thing - its arguable fear of crime troubles people far more than real crime in the West.

I think Smitty makesa good point though - generally I don’t think most violent crime involves foreigners. In fact, and this is anecdotal, I think more Westerners get hurt in motorcycle accidents than in robberies or random attacks. I think if you follow certain basic personal safety steps you should be fine.

It is still a very safe place compared to any place in the whole wide world offering similar “attractions”. You have to be really drunk or really stupid to get into some trouble in PAttaya. My advice is, if you want to feel extra secure, that you go home early in the evenings, let´s say midnight or one o´clock. Because all the trouble usually takes place late at night. Hey, there is always tomorrow night, don´t worry.

agree with smitty in that so long as we tread sensibly within the confines of our “visitor” status there is really nothing to worry about. but take my word for it, there are a lot of thai dudes ready to sort farang out that do step out of line. keep in mind too that as a general rule the isaan crowd are a much more easy going (and forgiving) lot than their compatriots from the southern and central provinces.

People’s perception of crime is nearly always worse than the reality. For example, Singaporeans and Hong Kongers believe they live in unsafe cities, that they’ll get robbed, raped and kideys stolen if they venture over their repsective borders to Malaysia & China. Nothing could be further from the truth. And Thais don’t necessarily have any great insight into the true risk of crime in their own country.

Considering the number of people drinking and taking drugs daily in Pattaya, I think it’s remarkable that it is so safe. Just look at your average Saturday night in Sydney or London. Carnage!

Incidentally, those Nationmaster stats are way old (1998-2000).

Pattaya for me is a escape into madness, we all need doses in our lives.

I usually do a 2-4 day stint just to remind myself that i am still sane compared to most.. ha. Pattaya seems to attract the under belly of the world . I have yet to encounter anything bad there (knock on wood), most of the people may be a little strange but with life its what you make of it.

When i want to really booze it up and fu@K like a rabbit i visit for a feast of pure hedonism. The fun part is when you meet a cutie and she is tired of all the slugs she encounters on a everyday basis that she skips work just to hang out with someone kinda normal, i have encountered this on my many trips there and its refreshing to have that 2-3 day girlfriend that wants you to have fun introduce you to her friends to sex them up and then talk about it.

Life is fun life is good.

Got my jester shoes a few days back on soi6. Some of the filth these bitches were shouting across the soi at me beggars belief.

I also nailed a Ladyboy that gave me 100baht for a motocy back to my piss-pot hotel as i was skint, bashed the snot out of some 38kg spinner from Lucifers with gravity defying tits, and stabbed the shtye of a 17yearold ladyboy freelancer. Not bad for 3days

The thing I hate about pattaya more then anything is the obnoxious cunt kids flogging those wanky little glowstick things. They are turds on legs. Hate the fuckers. Die.You tell them nicely to ‘fuck off and stagnate’ and they just stand there talking shit to you. If they couldnt hit harder then me, id love to chin 1. Take no for an answer you little twat!

Vile creatures they are. I would rather use the 20baht notes to give myself papercuts on the eyeball then give those little pricks the privelidge (shit spelling but i dont care) of relieving me of 20baht

Id love to see them pull that shit on a thai. Little scrotes

YP: I find a forearm smash in the face and shooting a snot rocket into their hair usually stops them.

I stopped the shoe-shine girls from giving me shit by telling her that everytime she pesters me, I was going to give her mate some money. If she had any sense, she’d have struck a deal with her mate.

Good to see YP back - as ever, his comments are exquisitely-wrought little gems of perception and wit, sparkling in the mud of the Mangoblog.

DW: No eating McMuffin’s Cold… nuff said.

I think we all need to get those dam jumpsuits and troll the streets of pattaya together.

Ghost… get your JS ready… have a “I heart Pattaya” sign on the back :)

There are so many mongers on the streets of Pattaya at all hours it’s hard to imagine getting in serious trouble unless you are a complete fool and simply looking to get bashed. Aside from the groups of yobs and lager louts you sometimes see the town seems pretty benign to farangs and actually offers a damn good time.
