In nearly the nearly five years I’ve been in Thailand, I have never once made the effort to go to Bangkok to partake in P4P. With Pattaya’s much-larger supply of available women-for-hire and the prices for such services in Bangkok, I’ve always throught, “why bother?”
But I got to thinking about the cost of Pattaya P4P again this week after reading Bangkok Bad Boy’s Value for Money column at Werewolf’s Lair. In the piece, BBB estimated that, in a best-case scenario, the starting price for a short-time tryst with a Nana Plaza go-go girl costs almost 3,000 baht when taking into account all the non-banging related expenses. And when he wrote that doubling or even tripling that price wouldn’t be difficult, I thought again that guys here in Fun Town must really have it good.
But do they?
Much to my surprise, it turns out that overall prices for Pattaya’s massage girls and freelancers are pretty much the same as those in Bangkok. Using a methodology similar to BBB’s, prices were within a few U.S. dollars of each other. On the other hand, it’s in the city’s 75 go-go bars – and especially in its hundreds of beer bars – that the expenses are much lower.
The Go-Go Bar
Relative to everything I’ve read and heard, a good Pattaya go-go is a marvelous wonder compared with what’s on offer in any of BKK’s naughty bar areas. Not only are there simply far more of them, but what goes on inside is a lot racier and a lot cheaper.
Casanony Agogo is a great example for the Pattaya experience. It’s a smallish Thai-owned bar with a mix of regular stage and table-dancing girls that is both relaxed and stocked with lots of attractive and generally unhardened dancers.
Come in, take a seat and order a draft beer. (Pattaya is built on draft beer.) At Casanovy and at least a half-dozen other go-gos, that’s 55 baht. Next, find yourself a companion. (It’s not hard, as they’re standing above you with no panties on.) She’ll undoubtedly want a tequila. That’s 100 baht, plus another beer for you.
Things are going well, so you pay the bar: 500 baht. The night’s still early, so short-time will be just fine. Most dancers (not showgirls) will ask 1,500 to 2,000 for short-time these days, but 95% of them will drop that to 1,000 baht (Christmastime excluded.) She collects her things and you head outside to the nearest flophouse, which offers you the room for 300. Condoms and bottled water are in the room free. If you assume you’ll get just one pop out of your hour, that’s 210 for drinks, 500 barfine, 300 room and a gray note for her for a total PPP of 2,010 baht ($60).
For many guys, though, that’s even high. Pattaya is small enough so that most short-time encounters happen in the guy’s hotel room or condo and I’ve never had problems with getting two pops in the short-time session, which can last up to 3 hours. Under those circumstances, you have a real-world chance of a total outlay of 1,710 or a PPP of 855 baht ($25.52).
Keep in mind that this is a pretty limited example. Many people will tell you that prices for go-go girls – especially showgirls – has risen sharply in the past two years and are now on a par similar to Bangkok. Also note that many guys prefer long-time, which averages about 1,000 baht more than short-time. Plus most guys buy a lot more drinks for themselves and the girls. Still, I wanted to keep to BBB’s formula, so there you go.
The Beer Bar
It’s estimated there are more than 700 beer bars in greater Pattaya, most of them hopelessly devoid of anything remotely Ghost-worthy. But Pattaya’s generally older farang population seems to find a lot of what they like in these laid back open-air bars. Here the prices drop even further.
Using the same metrics of two (in this case bottled) beers for you and a lady drink for her you’re looking at about spending 200 baht. Barfines are 200 baht and market rates for a short-time with a beer bar girl is 500 baht (with long-time at 1,000 baht). From a beer bar you’d undoubtedly be heading back to your own room, so no charge for the ST room.
If you manage somehow to find a cute under-25-year-old girl in one of these places, you can add another purple note to that price. But for the sake of averages, you’re looking at a single-pop session for 900 baht ($26.86). Again, though, in the real world, most beer bar girls go long time, dropping the PPP to 400 ($13.43) baht for two pops.
Soapy and Oily Massage
Pattaya has only four farang-centric soapy massage joints: the three Sabai places on Second Road in North Pattaya and the VIP Massage on Walking Street’s Soi Diamond. All operate with similar rates of 1,600 baht all-inclusive. Figure one drink each for you and her and you’re still looking at around 1,800 baht for two pops, for a PPP of 900 baht ($26.86).
While having a higher PPP, oily massage places can be a better experience, when you consider many of them actually give a decent to good massage. Most sessions run 60-90 minutes. Most full-service places will end up running around 1.200 baht for one pop ($35.82)
Freelancers
When it comes to freelancers, you have two venues: Beach Road and the “disco circuit.”
There are a large number of men who visit Pattaya that spend quite a lot of time at “The Coconut Bar,” as palm-lined Pattaya Beach is often called. The women that end up here fall into a few distinct groups: You’ve got the rock-hard veterans that have worked the same stretch of beach for years and actually have built up a regular clientele. You’ve got the girls that cannot work in the bar for various age, drug, alcohol or disease reasons, and finally the rough trade that frankly is too old or ugly to work anywhere else.
Short-time price here is 500 baht and most have a room just off the beach. In case you’re still interested, that’s a PPP of $14.92.
The disco girls are another story. A lot of these are former go-go girls who figured out they can make more money while simultaneously working less, sleeping more and doing whatever they want to. They’re hot, but also wildly unpredictable with more than a few carrying a monkey on their back.
They start the evening at a place like The Pattaya Beer Garden where they can eat and drink cheaply and possibly find a companion to take them out on the town. If not, they start around 11:30 at Lucifer’s, move to Marine Disco when Lucifer’s closes and then onto Club Insomnia around 3:30 a.m. If they are still on their own when Insomnia shuts down at 6 a.m., there’s still the J.P. Bar on Walking Street.
Assuming you hook up with one of these girls at Lucifer’s or Marine, you’ll be on the hook for two of your own beers and at least one Barcardi Breezer for her. In that case drinks are going to set you back about 500 baht. There’s no barfine and the party will continue in your room (long-time). If she’s good looking and popular, figure on 1,500 for her and probably just two pops. That’s 2,000 baht total for a PPP or $29.85.
So Why Is Pattaya Cheaper?
As I noted above, the fact is that massage girls and freelancers are not much cheaper in Pattaya than Bangkok. BBB, in his column, had soapy girls at a PPP of $29.85 (vs. my $26.86) and freelancers at $29.84 (vs. my $29.85). But bedding a typical go-go girl is much cheaper.
So why is that? Most people would guess it’s because the cost of living in Pattaya is lower or that supply is larger than demand. Others snipe that Pattaya’s old codgers and Cheap Charlies simply wouldn’t pay more. But the real reason is that go-go girls get paid better salaries.
“The bars are subsidizing what the customer has to pay the girl,” says Paul Treacle, co-owner of Hooty’s a Go Go and a former manager in some of Walking Street’s largest bars. “If we paid girls what they get paid in Bangkok, guys here would be paying 4,000 baht long time too.”
Go-go salaries have been steadily rising for years, but it wasn’t until the opening of Angelwitch in Pattaya two years ago that wages went nuts. In an effort to get the best girls for their huge new bar, Angelwitch management offered salaries up to 20,000 baht for showgirls and 12,000 for dancers, figures previously unheard of in Pattaya.
To keep their showgirl talent, other bars had to counter and bidding wars started. The girls, quickly wise to the game, simply bounced between bars, one month at a time, jacking up their salary with each jump.
Things seem to have stabilized now, but a regular dancer in a Walking Street go-go bar still gets paid an average of around 7,000 baht per month. If she shows some skin, that generally jumps to around 9,000 baht. Non-showgirls who still bare all can easily fetch 12,000 baht per month while showgirls get 15,000-20,000 baht per month. Even service staff get paid an average around 5,000 baht per month.
Compare this with many Bangkok bars where dancers make around 4,500-6,000 baht per month and showgirls are lucky to break 10,000 baht.
“If I told my dancers tomorrow that I was going to pay them 4,500 baht salary and that they had to get barfines for the rest of their money, they’d all walk out the door,” Treacle said.
It’s because of high salaries that so many Pattaya go-go bars have trouble being profitable. But it’s what also keep punters coming to the city. Bar owners pretty much agree that Pattaya’s tourist clientele wouldn’t pay Bangkok prices.
“Bangkok bars get businessmen, lots more Asians and younger tourists with expendable income,” said another bar owner. “Pattaya has a lot of older guys, retirees on fixed incomes and people who’ve become accustomed to low prices for pussy. If they started getting charged 3,000 short time, they’d just go to The Philippines.”

However I am going to state on record that I think the final logic is wrong. from what I know most go-gos in bkk are all in the 7k on up range for salaries. those prices for AW are what AW is close to paying in bkk from what I know as well. Go to any of the bars on cowboy and it is all 7-10k I think plus more for showgirls. I know there are exceptions to the rule but those are usually the bars without the hot girls.
I think in general the “cheap charlie” syndrome holds more sway over the pricing but I think the bigger issue is that for sure the overall cost of living for the girls in bkk is more than pattaya.
the food, the apartments, the getting around, the partying and so on is more expensive in bkk than pattaya. I think that is reflected in the prices they charge. makes sense. no different than it is cheaper to eat in pattaya than bkk. rents are cheaper. pattaya is also smaller and I think the getting around is cheaper.
when u mention places like insomnia it further shows the difference in costs to the FL market since insomnia actually charges the girls less and has a kickback program. no after hours joint in bkk has that.
I also think there are more venues for FL in pattaya and the place is almost 24hours. girls get more pops in and charge less per pop.
obviously this is a theory but I don’t think the salaries are that far out of kilter to make the big pricing difference in the overall market.

All I can is when I’d go to Pattaya (which after the Brits started releasing their prisoners directly to Soi Yamato I no longer do) and return to BKK and hit the Ekkemai BTS station and subsequnet train, I’d take one look at the BKK girls and say to myself “Self, why was it you left?”

Proportionally there are much more girls available in Pattaya than in Bangkok, and basically all within walking distance. This means bigger competition and should also explain the lower prices.

Great post, and I am sure that you will stimulate a lot of responses about the costs and merits of Patpong by the Sea. Any discussion of Pattaya P4P pricing is going to come back to the fact that the customers - both tourist and expat - are not the same people visiting their villas in Tuscany or the south of France.
A bump in the exchange rate, price inflation, or visa requirements is reflected in the whining and howling on the message boards devoted to the place. The ranks of the down-and-out in Cambodia and the PI swell as a result.
While there are other reasons to go to Bangkok aside from cheap quim, if there were no cheap pussy there would be no Pattaya.

p - correct. it is the only reason I go but not really because it is cheaper. as pointed out I think only the drinking is cheaper but the gogo scene i usually end up spending about the same on a night out with ladies in bkk that I spend in pattaya. not really one to chase the cheap scene for sure I eat and drink cheaper in pattaya than I do in bkk
I go for the sheer amount of gogo options, the increase nude sightings and the fact it goes all night. if it lost any of those I would see no reason to go to pattaya
same as I see no reason to go to AC or cambodia for the most part.
like jd says - as soon as I hit the BTS I am always happy to be in bkk. the office girls, the uni girls, the other foreign girls and so on make up such an array of puss that it boggles the mind.

Smitty’s pay rates for BKK girls is more in line with my understanding. One girl I know gets 10k a month as a dancer & 15k when doing shows. Admittedly in what is generally regarded as one of BKKs better go-go’s.

I mentioned to Smitty earlier today in an e-mail that my reference for salaries in BKK are Pattaya bar owners who mentioned a couple of Patpong places specifically. So, yes, I may have low-balled the average for all of BKK.
However, I also beleive personally that I lowballed the estimates in Pattaya a bit. Anecdotally most the dancer girls I know are getting 9,000-10,000 with showgirls in the 14,000-18,000 rate. But, taking into account the Thai-owned places, I put the average down a bit.
As for quality, I wouldn’t dispute the looks of the Bangkok girls are probably higher. Certainly my first stop in BKK if I ever make it up there is Rainbow 4, which I have wanted to visit for years. On the otherhand, aren’t all the girls here or there from Isaan anyway? If so, the looks department in both cities should be pretty similar.

I was at Shark bar in Soi Cowboy earlier this year and they actually had their pay rates advertised on a chalkboard above the outdoor bar area. Can’t remember what they were but it basically was advertising for new staff and they weren’t shy about advertising how much they pay the girls….from memory I remember them being quite generous although they can afford to be generous, BF’s and LD’s quite expensive also!! Also the girls were quoting 4k Baht long time. Lucky my ex-girlfriend worked there and I got a freebie that night!!

having spent much time in both ptya and bkk over the past few years i have to say that while ho quality has gone down in both places, it has strikingly so in ptya. i was there a week ago and while i know it was low season, it was ridiculous: it was hard to find girls in the gogos i would let pay ME for sex.

BTW, a good rub/tug value found in ptya: about 100 meters up Soi 13/2 from Beach Road is a generic massage shop. It’s next to another massage shop. This one advertises a “4 hands” massage for 500 baht. The girls are not hot but it’s well-worth it as the massage was top notch and the tug was included in the price. No tip asked for but I threw down an extra 100 baht.

Pattaya was always hyped up to me by my pals in BKK and was the kind of place to go for a naughty boys weekend. So Bangkok became my benchmark. When we actually went to Pattaya it was er…….Shit. Have to agree with Jonbanger nothing took my fancy so I went without. I will give it another try this time. The costs and all don’t really matter it’s just another place to add variety. Sometimes you need to get out of BKk, but it’s always good to come back. Maybe that’s why I leave so I can back. Bit like break-up and make-up sex lol. I did spend a lot on time in Phuket and Bangla Rd kicks Walking Streets ass. I must say I don’t know my way round Pattaya though.
My two scents worth on prices. Electric Blue Patpong pay 7K and Rainbow 4 pays 14K. That was for the hotties, don’t know about the ugly ones as I don’t barfine them.

I just spent 5000 baht last night at a member club. some will cringe at that. but fuck it. roughly 1000 baht an hour for drinking and having the company of 2 super hot girls. bagged a phone number and lining up a date. a date in her apartment to play playstation 3 GTA. she says she plays in her underwear. I would have spent 10k and thought it was worth it. but hey - u only live once.

I’m sometimes privy to conversations, being an ex-pimp and all, about how bargirls arrive at their quote for a given Punter. It’s a science that needs some additional research before publicizing results but many similarities to the Commodities Market. I’ve seen the same girl quote five different prices in the same night. The one of 5000 was funny, it was after she just had a session with a horse-hung Punter. A few hours later, after healing a bit, it was down to 4000.
Their “market value” comes from many different factors but the word on the street, the chatter between the girls about rates, is the driving factor and most interesting to listen in on. They talk about it all and know how much each of the areas are getting. Massage girls know what gogo girls make, freelancers know what beer bar girls make, etc. As you can imagine, they also try and profile the customer with there barrage of “where you come from?” questions to factor into the pricing.
Sorry to ramble on but P4P pricing always interests me. Much like we discuss pricing from our point of view, they do it on there end with far more detail and sophistication. They don’t even need the technology advances like Internet Blogs to accomplish this. Although I’m sure they would find a “TheBargirlSpeaks2Much” blog extremely helpful.

This is class 101 stuff. I tell all my friends and punters i see out on the town to always answer the question a girl will say to were you from. Say i live pattaya long time my home now. She will not try a pull a high rate just throw a low rate. It works for me evernight. Also will always work late at night and say long time only. Say boom-boom 2 times and cant leave before 10 in morning or will not get payed. They need the money and are used to be treated like this from thi men. Always take control of all these whores. It is in there culture there secound class

I agree with you milo and considering most nights I go out and blow 3,000-5,000 and sleep alone (long self-humiliating post on that this past week), I don’t think if I got drinks and a pixie for 2K, I’d be doing good.
But it’s kind of a mindset down here. Much as so many BKK guys like to brag online how they never — and should never have to — pay for ANY poon due to the large supply of wanton “good” girls there, we, too have our holier (and chepaer) than thou brothers.
Most of these guys, though, are pushing 60 or 70, get a tall Leo from the 7/11 and sit out on Beach Road trying to chat up some 300 baht companionship. Or they troll around the Big C propositioning random women on the escalator. Or, usually, they just ride around the Beach Road/Second Road loop on a songthaew for 10 baht soliciting any single woman who happens to make the mistake of getting on their baht bus.
Of course, we also have the young studs who, in my Ghostly opinion, have no business being in Pattaya. They can get laid for free anywhere in the world. Leave the hookers to me! But they come here, hit the discos and will simply proposition women until one says she’ll go for free.
I’ve seen it happen personally and beleive me, the ones this stud ended up with would have to pay me to bang them.
So, there you go. Pattaya Cheap Charlie 101.

Despite my best efforts I’m still young and reasonably good-looking, and on my last visit I was hoping for a free shag from a go-go girl. The closest I got was my favourite Angelwitcher offering to go short-time for 600. It was a prouder moment than my graduation.
My domiciled mates did considerably better on the freebie front, being closer to the farang ideal than I am as a non-Thai speaking chocolateman. But I can’t help thinking that if a gog-go girl shags you for free its because she wants to hook you for a sponsor, or a husband. I used to have a rule that I imposed on any go-go girl that became a semi-regular that, if I called her, I’d pay. But if she called me and wanted to come over, there would be no payment. More than a few played by those rules for a long time.
For some reason, though, the rule kind of fell by the wayshide more than a year ago and I stopped suggesting it. Not due to lack of success. Not really sure why, but I think it would be harder to do that with the Pattaya girls these days.

My rule was really born out of resentment of being a bank anytime some random pole dancer needed some cash. Yes, I know we’re all walking ATMs to an extent, but letting them reach into my wallet whenever THEY want, whether I’m in the mood or not, just makes the total experience too cheap and cold for me.
Conversely, though, if the girl agrees to come over and not expect money, then I feel she actually likes me (at least marginally) for more than my cash. As a result, I’m often much more willing to help her later when she really needs it.
I’ve got one now who’s very regular. I think I might bring that rule up with her. What I’ve been doing is just saying NO when I wasn’t in the mood to play Fuck-O-Matic Cash Dispenser.

Once at Erotica in NEP, and once at Spice Girls on Cowboy.
Both times, I bought the girl a drink, got chatting, then arranged to meet after the bar closed. So not entirely free if you count the drinks bill, but no barfine or long-time fee paid.
Sometimes they’d rather have a good time and a quiet clean place to sleep than nothing at all - only works on quiet nights, obviously…
