Greetings and Salutations. Low season is peaking for sure. Probably the slowest week of the year as streets and bars were empty most nights. A friend of mine celebrated a Birthday this past week. This is not a bad place to celebrate a birthday of course but we were a few drinks in and struggling to decide what to do. It was raining and we lazily wanted to stay in the lower Suk area but we didn’t want to do the usual p4p scene. Well, not to start anyway. Birthday Boy (BB) remembered a place he hadn’t been to in years called the Check Inn 99 Restaurant and Bar that is located on Sukhumvit between Soi 5 and 7. He said it was a loungy place with bar girls. Perfect.
I had heard a few reports over the years about this place, always positive. I’ve walked by it hundreds of times as well and since it’s off the road a bit you can’t tell what’s inside so I never ventured in. We decided to give it a shot.
We arrived around 6:00pm just in time for the 2-for-1 Happy Hours and proceeded to booze away. At that time there was only staff so we asked one of them if the place had girls. The lady told us that 21 girls report to work at 8:00pm. No problem. 2-for-1 and a full menu of food should kill a few hours.
Like I mentioned, the place is right in the heart of all things lower Sukhumvit. Look for the Check Inn sign and then you walk down a hallway to the front door. Once you enter you leave the noisy, smelly and crowded Sukhumvit road and emerge into a classic and traditional Bar/Lounge. Just what we were looking for. A zany little lounge with girls, decent food, and live music.
We ordered some appetizers, quesadillas and snails. We were pretty lit obviously. The quesos were not really quesos, more like cheese dumplings. Very lame with no taste. The snails however were brilliant. They mistakenly brought us three portions but we were happy to wolf them down. I hear the steak is pretty good too but the rest of the food we ordered came in a glass.
I love the layout of the place. They have an area you step up into suited mostly for diners but it’s also a nice perch for when the band comes on. The rest of the place is a bar, a lounge with around ten tables and an area for the band. The decor is somewhat tacky but appropriate. It’s also darker which I like which makes sense given what I talk about below.
We got to talking with some of the staff and they were super friendly. Two waiters pushing sixty told us they both started on the same day, 15 years ago. Nice guys. Just part of the charm that this place has in abundance.
8:00pm approached. It was me, sideshowBob (ssB) and BB and we waited with much anticipation. However, we earlier enquired about the average age of the girls which they told us was mid-30’s, and noticed that the clientele average age was around 60 and mostly couples, so we knew the underage police wouldn’t be busting this place anytime soon.
ssB kept his eyes trained on the front door to see the lovelies enter. I think he wanted to lay claim to any hotties knowing that if you snooze you lose. Not a bad strategy. In they came. After about five geriatrics rolled in ssB spotted a late 20’s entering and pounced. BB and I waited as the rest rolled in. The staff wasn’t kidding, the girls were definitely older but some nice looking ladies. We eventually spotted a few and brought four of them in to surround the table and hang out.
The girls were nice and a good change of pace from the 19-23 year-old hard bodies we normally go for. BTW, they are your typical bar girls, 120 baht lady drink and 600 baht barfine I believe, ST/LT rates are probably the same as well. Unfortunately, the girl I chose was a bit of a dud. She was around 30 and very attractive with an average at best body. Her attitude was a bit subdued. Sure, I’m a bit tainted being used to thong-happy GoGo girls jumping into my lap begging me to barfine and shag them, so playing the slow game with an older chick can be quite annoying. The beauty of Thailand though is that you can chill and have fun in a place like this and then go out later to get your rocks off with the daughters of these girls. I know, I’m a pig.
The night was rolling along and then came the Band. Three 30-something Filipino girls and a guy came out and did some fairly recent covers and some classics. They were BRILLIANT. Sure, I was 10+ drinks in but I don’t care, they were still amazing. They were dressed nice and shook their small to mid-sized Filipino asses in just the right way.
The Check Inn really delivered. An oasis in the middle of Sukhumvit that I highly recommend for a change of pace.
None of us hooked up of course and decided to head over to a new massage/bar place on Petchaburi called the Pink Rose Massage Club. The place was not that great but we brought the eight or so girls down for a drink and hung out for a bit. None of them jumped out so it was off to Cowboy and then After Hours. Typical of course except for the Check Inn which may become more typical as time goes on.
In other news, be careful walking down Soi 4 between Soi Mango and Soi 6 after 2:00am. There is this nasty creature of a Ladyboy picking the pockets of drunk farang. I saw here in action simultaneously hugging and picking the pockets of one drunk guy. I ran over to break it up and made sure the guy hadn’t lost anything which didn’t make monster ladyboy very happy. My friend said he saw her do the same the previous night. Will point her out to my soi 4 Police contact next time I see her but be careful in the meantime. That means you Jack Dawson.

I did wander out onto Cowboy last week, but have little to add than what we already knew - Rawhide has a mixture of cute chicks (good) and fat chicks (bad), Cowboy 2 sucks ass, and any gogo bar with “coyote” girls in it seems a dreadful waste of time - neither one thing nor the other. Pretty dead in most bars except for the more popular one’s like Shark, Baccara and Tilac.
Spotlight Reviews from the Guide:
1. “Have to agree, as a go go bar, it sucks. But it is the place I get drawn to after a boozy night in Cowboy and need my ballsack emptying before I go home.
It must be getting popular, because last night there was a freakin queue. I could’t cope with that, so moved on to Jungle Jim’s.” - jaiyenyen on Cocktail Club GoGo

2. “Popped my head in once, horny and craving a blowie
Some meathead in a football shirt getting blown at the bar shouted something along the lines of ‘fuck off you cunt we’re shut’
Doubt he was the owner. If his pants were’nt round his ankles and his small wang hanging out, id of chinned him.
Their loss of 700baht I guess. “- Young Penfold on Star of Light

This week found me in the go go bars of Sutisan Road, which I usually enjoy. It was a typical experience… grungy decor, good service, cheap beer (100 baht for a large bottle of singha), and plenty of girls.
I didn’t pull any women, but the guy I went with found a lady with some of the finest tits on earth dancing naked on stage at MUSIC VDO and took a liking to her. He paid the all-inclusive fee of 1,500 baht and took her home for 3 hours.
He was so happy with the experience that he SMS’d me the next day to say he was going back and taking her out again.
Contrary to many published opinions, you don’t have to speak Thai to enjoy this area and it’s okay to go alone. Farangs are quite welcome here even though 99% of the clientele is Thai.

Buddy of mine (PRP) was in Gullivers the other week during the day for a feeding session. Apparently the place is full of our Nigerian friends with mobile phones glued to their ears. You know the type… basketball vest that reaches the knees, big gold chain that is too big for Mr.T and no doubt a wad of cash in their pockets that wasn’t earned the honest way.

I originally found some post a while back on a different forum about some street filled with uni girls p4p and thought nothing of it. However, recently there was a reply with more information which sparked my curiosity. Looks like it’s not to far from RCA. Has anyone ventured out here? Would love to read a trip report.
” I was there in August , it is just off new petchburi road , and there are alot of really gorgeous girls , if u want to find it , coming from sukhumvit road go down asoke , until u get to the next mrt station , and turn right onto new petchburi rd . Travel down about 1 km , and lookout on the left hand side for them on the corner , and up that small street , which turns left , and runs parallel with new petchburi rd . The girls dont start turning up until after 10 pm most nites , are mostly farang friendly , but try to ask 4,500 long time , and 2,500 short time . If u can single them out , and get them away from the other girls though , the prices drop to 3 - 3.5 L/T , 1,500 - 2,000 S/T . there is usually fifty to 100 girls there , and some absolute stunners amongst them . If you like em 18 -23 , college / uni type girls , check it out . The general standard of all the girls , is well above the average go go bar , so cruise past in a taxi and have a look , u wont be disappointed . I will be there on the nite of 8 october , and will file another report the next day . Chok dee”

I got no time for those crafty Ghanain gem trading spunkbags. I’ve had the misfortune of playing football with/against them in the casuals Bangkok football league, and they are truley gruesome bastards.
Heres 3 serious questions………
1 - What actually are the ‘gem scams’ - Ive heard of them, but no details about them……
2 - Can you guys get Setanta TV in the bar?
3 - How many hairs on 20 bollocks?

dw - gullivers is getting real bad in my opinions between the nigerians and the towel heads I hardly see the point in going. the nigerians have taken over a 1/4 of the bar. the management knows it is bad and is doing nothing about but business is slipping over it. They say gullivers is sharply down year over year for the first time.
v - u mean this post:
http://www.2thebigmango.com/reader-submissions/2007/07/11/places-to-avoid-3-the-streetwalker-supermarket-behind-the-siam-hotel-by-bigbabykenny/
the place is still there but siam hotel is gone now. this places is hit or miss but worth checking. however have your wits about u given the thais running the street and the sometimes shady hotels they want to go to. I say pick up but go to known short time hotels without the male guy following.
yp - what tv are u going on and on about. we only get UBC or south african bootleg. no pay per view.
blame the easter egg on BBB. it is sucks. I bleached my eyes when I saw that. they still hurt. from the bleach.

After a Mango-burger, and a eyeful of the ever lovely “O”, I had to go meet a fellow from Indo at Gulliver’s last week, never have I seen so many grossly fat hogs plying their trade. More than a couple were in, I swear this is true, at minimum, the 60 or 70 kilo range. Those scammers from Africa seem to favor that type. What in the hell is this world coming to. No more meetings at that place.

@V: Your info is overpriced for sure. That’s the Phet Uthai/Kamphaeng Phet 7 junction, round the corner from what used to be the old Siam Hotel on Phetchaburi.
Girls went for 1000-1500 short time last time I was there, never tried for long-time. I doubt many of them have seen the inside of a University though.

@bongo: I did say it was raining so the effort was tied into that. You should see what the rain does to my hair. As for the Check Inn being tacky, maybe, but it’s more “retro” or “classic” to me. Enjoyed it mostly because the staff was friendly, I like a dark lounge, and the band was a riot. I loved how the lead singer said hello to everyone in the bar at different points. “Hey, there’s Larry from Seattle at the bar again. Thanks for joining us again tonight Larry”. Classic.

pmmp - You heard correctly about the steaks at the Check Inn. A great deal for under 500 baht.
They use the name Check Inn Garden now. The 99 came from the old price of 99 baht per lady drink.
The Filipina singers have been there for a few years. Great show, and I have yet to see them wearing the same outfits.
But be prepared for sticker shock when taking a girl out. Even though it is the same merchandise as elsewhere, they firmly believe that a nicer wrapper justifies a much higher price.

View all comments by Nok Opayop
@ Imprint - I been looking hi and low for a bar that shows the PPVs in BKK but so far had no joy. Setanta SportsUK TV shows them for free, but the major pain in the arse is the time difference from UK/USA showing them in Asia
The Leben/Bisping & Jardine/Vera fight is in UK so will be on 4-5am Bangkok time
I usually catch the fights on fightviewer.com or mmashare.com the next day, but doesnt have same effect

Walking past the Millenium Tower today (where Fitness First is; corner Asok & Sukhumvit next to Asok BTS) I saw a huge sign going up for “Champagne Charlie’s” on the ground floor.
From the looks of the sign it appears to be a place that will be a large, upscale, farang nightclub or restaurant.
I don’t know anything more about it than the location and what the sign looks like, but it’s a primo location so I’m guessing that it might be an interesting place to visit when it opens.

Pmmp - You just found out about Check-in 99 ? How many nights have you walked past that little hallway. This place is a good start off point if you want to have a dinner with some friends -it can be fun playing around with the band also if you speak a few words of tagalog.
Next time try the steak -sauce on the side - if you get there before 10pm.
A few more places to comment on:
Q-bar : what was I thinking- enough said.
Spice club @ 3 am - not to bad this week a few of the ‘coyotes ‘ are getting real pushy with the Tequila lady drinks though.
2 drinks and out this trip.
RCA: after the 40 minute traffic jam trying to drive into RCA avenue from Rama 9 things got better - sitting in traffic has its benefits after you get past the guard shack- all the girls walking past- you can just watch where the hottest ones are headed-saves time wondering where to go first.
I ended up going to Slim as that’s where the group was heading, it was ok for a start but I was bored after the first drink- lots of girls and guys there that night, There was a special price on bottles of JW Red that night.
Cowboy :
Rawhide: The line up has definitely changed over the last few months and not for the better. After a few drinks that doesn’t bother me as much as the damm seats do!
Tilac: walked in about 10pm and it was already real busy - I still was able to get a nice back rub from one of the service girls.
5 Star: I wasn’t there for 9-10 months but the music the band was playing was almost the same as before. still good tunes but they need to add some newer songs - drinks prices are normal 100-120.
Deja Vu : turned around at the door…
Sheeba’s : just missed the 3-way show , still was a good amount of nice looking girls in there and the service was great this night.
Tony’s Bar: stopped in there about midnight - the girls were in a real friendly mood lots of smiles from the dancers, the music was good also.
Back Home to Soi 4
Hillary 1 : stopped over to say hello to the Boss and grab a drink-only problem is the CoolWater fans must have been set on Waterpark mode - it actually put my cigarette out 3 times.
Hillary 2: getting there during the last song of the night from the band so missed most of the fun -then got a beating at pool from a lovely that forgot she was wearing a Mini skirt- can you say Distraction?
that was my round for a few days.

re: the Dark Horse Band at Five Star Go Go on Soi Cowboy… the same band has been playing there for eight years, and I’ve been listening to them play for half that time. On every one of my dozens of visits they have had the exact same playlist, presumably the same one they started with 8 years ago. I know the guys in the band reasonably well, and I once suggested to them that they learn some new material, and I even gave them a list of a dozen songs that I thought would compliment their play list. They just weren’t interested.
It happens that I was in Five Star last night (Friday). They had some decent looking girls… a few in particular had a sexy look happening. That was until I realized that every girl there who wasn’t fat had serious stretch mark scars from childbirth.
They had a nude show that ran from 9:30 to 10:30 before the band started playing. If you didn’t focus on the stretch marks it was a decent show, but the quality of the best girls in Five Star is off a bit from previous times; and it’s never been that great.
The band is still the best reason to visit, but don’t expect an evolving playlist.

@pmmp - Have not shopped at the Check Inn for about five years, only gone for dinner. But even back then, some girls wanted 2000 for ST because they were “Check Inn Girls”.
View all comments by Dilligaf
@Dilligaf: “Check Inn Girls”, that’s funny. They were the only downside for me about this place. Worse than soi 33 dead artist bar girls imho. Perhaps things have changed in five years. I can’t see how they would have that attitude today given the lineup. Out of twenty or so Check Inn girls there I would maybe barfine one of them. Some of them were downright scary. Fine to have a drink with but these girls were not fit enough to have any attitude. Then again, the clientele is a bit older and beauty is in the eye of the beholder so I guess a 30-something gal in an evening dress can fetch a decent rate.

Just a general question, but where can I get my fix of metal in BKK?
I have read ‘Rock Pub’ is the only place. Is this true? Do any other bars/clubs player heavier type tunes.
View all comments by Imprint
@Imprint: I only know of the Rock Pub as you mentioned. A Rock Pub review is here if you haven’t been. There is Tokyo Joe’s too but not so much Metal, more Blues and Rock.
For Rock in GoGo’s there’s Suzie Wong GoGo and Cactus GoGo in Cowboy and Playskool in Nana Plaza.
View all comments by pmmp
A different kinds of rock, but also Kiss Go Go in Patpong, Safari Go Go in Patpong, and (with apologies for repeating) Five Star Go Go on Soi Cowboy. (Definitely not metal)
There’s lots of brass on offer at Saxaphone at Victory Monument; especially before 9:30. Yeah, I know… wrong kind of metal.
Other decent live rock music can be found at Mojo on Soi 33, Titanium on Soi 22 and Hillary Bar 2 on Soi 4.
Finally, there’s the Bangkok Gig Guide — a good guide to live music in Bangkok.

“Deja Vu : turned around at the door…”
I turned around because my friend was stopped at the door and questioned by the security guard- after that neither of us wanted to continue inside.
@ doctorbond : I thought it was a dream until now, what was that sticky stuff on my hand?. See updated music list might keep me awake.
@ Werewolf: I do like that band also, I had no idea they had it the same for so many years. Glad I didn’t say anything.

The Check Inn Garden seems to be a long-held secret. Stuck in the 70s, but for some a nice change from the ubiquitous gogos and beer bars inhabiting Sukhumvit.
The 3 Filipina girls and one older male are related to each other, and have been playing there every (open) night from 8 pm to 1 am, for at least 5 years. Amazing endurance and energy shown nightly.
The CIG ladies sit quietly in the background and wait for customers to call them over for drinks.
I’ve never personally approached a CIG lady for a barfine, as they have never appealed to me. However, a friend visiting Thailand for the 1st time was enthralled by a taller lady who was dressed very classy, but was also older and did not have a great body. Her response to his suggested LT was that she did ST only for 3,000 baht.
Perhaps in response to my choking on my drink, my friend declined her offer. She did not come back with a counter offer.
Re: Gullivers. I stopped going there a couple of years ago because it had turned too much into a western-type bar with Soi 7 BG quality ladies focused on high fees and potential sponsors. (Nothing wrong with that, just capitalism).
I dropped back in there a few weeks ago, and was surprised at much the back section was dominated by West Africans. I guess they can’t spend all night hanging in Soi Africa off of Soi 3. Gullivers is one for the few bars I vehemently oppose entering.

I talked to a Mandarin Club dancer tonight and she said that Nana Plaza will be OPEN on Saturday night, but no alcohol served.
She knew about the election and the alcohol ban.
This is consistent with the last couple of no-alcohol weekends that we have had. The same girl has given me an advance report on each, and she’s been right every time up till now.
Also, I spoke to her immediately after they finished an employee meeting (end of month thing I think) and so she should have been up to date on all the news.

n15 - I guess it all depends on your definition of what the weekend is. Friday is business as usual.
Saturday places will stop serving at 6:00 pm. So my guess is most clubs will not open since they cant serve. No point in going to a club if u cant drink is there? I know all the g clubs appear to be closing.
sunday is the crapshoot. Just depends how soon they let people start serving again. At this point they are saying midnight so I doubt places will open back up on Sunday.
