Greetings and Salutations. Second week and the Weekly is on time. Miracles do happen.
This week I wanted to share some feelings after helping to host the Big Mango Bar’s first theme party. The event was a Ladies-Only Pool Tournament and was aimed at attracting “single” ladies to the bar which in turn would attract horny guys looking to hook up with these ladies. Overall, attracting these ladies to the bar will take some time and effort to pull off, if it can even be done, so we’re hoping events like this one will help get us there.
Expectations for the event were not set too high given it was our first one. Basically, we would get a few more ladies knowing about the bar and it would be fun for customers to see the ladies battling it out for cash prizes. Well, it was a fun event and expectations were met for the most part but not everything went according to plan.
To get the sixteen ladies needed for the tournament we sent out some of the Mango crew to hand out flyers to a particular demographic (i.e. hot FLs that like to play pool). We also called ladies that we knew to come participate. With no entry fee and prizes of 5000 for first, 2000 for second, and 1000 for third, you think it would easy to get a sweet sixteen. Unfortunately we came up 2 or 3 short, even after getting a few dozen confirms on the street. Lesson to be learned for next time, get more confirmations.
The games began a little late but we managed to fill the brackets with a few off-duty friends and employees. As the tournament progressed there were a few guys that kept track and watched, two of which I know hooked up with a few of the ladies, but for the most part people chilled out and observed from afar. Well let me tell you, they were probably better off as they didn’t get to see the dark side of the event. In fact, I may be the only one who did.
The dark side that I’m talking about is the behavior of these little angels behind the scenes. Now, we’re all used to being charmed by these little vixens as they vie for our baht. Most of us enjoy this fawning as it plays to our ego and it’s sometimes the only side we see. If you do see a dark side it’s mostly the normal dark side behavior you would expect from them losing face, or not getting paid, or not accepting the fact that you are breaking up with them, or the jealous rage after finding out that you slept with another girl from her bar, etc., but that’s not the behavior I observed during the party. The darkness I saw was more about how crude some of them were.
There was no entrance fee and we were extremely inviting to the girls but a few of them could care less about being treated kindly and with respect. Money and “face” were the only things they cared about. Some of them were disrespectful, ungrateful, rude, late, one girl bailed to go party with her friends instead, and we almost had a catfight over who broke when. One nasty little b told me to rudely get out of a picture they were taking with MY camera because she thought I was some guy trying to hit on them. Her friend quickly told her in Thai that I was running the show and all of a sudden she was a sweet little angel and kissed my ass the rest of the night. It was quite a negative vibe from some of them and made me question a little about hosting another one of these in the future.
I’m not naive and I do realize who I’m dealing with but it was disappointing nonetheless. I have seen this dark side in the past when ladies aren’t “on the clock” and we know how the sweet eyes go sour when we leave the designated zones like Nana and Soi Cowboy. It’s more real for sure but who needs that reality. It was just a little surprising seeing it during this event.
I still love the little beauties til death do us part especially the nicer one’s that signed up, and we will continue on the path to attract them but I’ll certainly be more prepared next time. One last thing, if you have fallen for a Freelancer or Bargirl and would like to know if your little angel has a similar dark side, you are welcome to enter her in the next Pool tournament and ask me what I think afterwards. Of course, if she’s hot I’ll probably tell you she is a bitch no matter what so I can hook up with her myself later. After all, ladies aren’t the only one’s with a dark side.

The ‘Pong
Over in Patpong, things are looking rosy for the smokers amongst us. Less so for the anti-smokers. Oh well. The only bar with no ashtrays out was, ironically enough, the Star of Light.
Also on Patpong 2, up across from Foodland, work continues on the Factory Bar. I think this is possibly related to the (delayed) Parkbridge club mentioned a few weeks ago.
The bar’s not ready yet, but the graffiti in the stairwell is pretty eye-catching. If memory serves, this is the former location of “The After” club. Could be wrong - I was several sheets to the wind by this point of the evening. Bangkok Eyes has photos of the stairwell, at least, here.
Further south, I spotted the irritating-as-hell mamasan from Mandarin Table Dance working/loitering outside The Strip. True to form, she began to bellow enthusiastically at me from 50 yards away, to the point where I considered turning around completely. But no, I strode on, and was physically and verbally assaulted in what I’m sure she considered a friendly fashion. Run away.
As an aside, the girl in S&M gear hovering in the doorway of next-door Barbar was possibly the least attractive girl I’ve ever seen working in Patpong. And I’ve been to Super Queen.
Soi Cowboy
Meanwhile, on Soi Cowboy, aficionados of fine Scotch whiskies will be underwhelmed to learn that Shadow Bar is now stocking Grant’s. Still, at least it’s not Bell’s.
Shark is still the finest gogo on the soi, in this author’s opinion. For sheer volume of talent, with no visible attitudes, this place is a winner. Great bars do have their downsides though - it’s regularly so packed that I can’t get a seat. Oh well, at least they’re doing something right.
Which is more than can be said for Cocktail Club. I used to pop in here occasionally for a budget blow job (500b) in the toilet from my pick of whichever girls weren’t stood languidly on the stage, refusing to dance. The service is no longer available and, tellingly, the bar was otherwise empty.
I popped into Rawhide - where’s the high ceiling gone? Most confusing. I think it was Rawhide, anyway. I can’t have been that drunk. Although I’m beginning to wonder now. Still a few cute thin girls in here, but as sideshowBOB says, they’re definitely outnumbered by the tubby brigade.
Had a beer in Deja Vu. Wished I hadn’t. Almost entirely empty, with a few girls naked and up on stage who had no right to be either.
The fish and chips from the Offshore on soi 23 are still reassuringly grim. Tastes like home.
The ‘Pong
Avoided it like the plague so I have nothing to add other than the clubs seems to be packed and Funky Dojo is going late.
Soi Cowboy
Had 2 minor excursions to Cowboy. First one was for dinner. Now that PJ is running the Old Dutch I decided to drop in and give him a bad time. Then he reminded me that the ribs at the Old Dutch are the same as his old Restaurant on Suk Soi 31. Sure enough they are. Half rack, green peas and some fries hit the spot bigtime. Go say hey to PJ.
Shark is still the bar with most hotties but they are not naked. Attitude aint bad though and the prices are reasonable. IMHO u can never go wrong by dropping in the Shark.
Long Gun has been rumored to be happening again. For me - I think not. It needs a fucking remodel. The seats, the stage and the sound system are older than sin. They do have new girls and for most sets the girls are now totally nude but the attitude is still thick enough to cut with a knife. Crowds are down to so maybe management will find a clue? I hear they sell them in Pantip.
Apache - right across from Long Gun. The girls are not hot but they are always naked, the music is kicking and the drinks are reasonable. For some reason I don’t mind dropping in for a few drinks since I have fun watching the scene.
Deja Vu - Well. They have added some more tables but the place is really low on girls. There are a few hotties and they are mostly always naked but the place is pricey and u need a micro loan from Grameen Bank just to buy lady drinks. Not my thing.
Rawhide - Well - something went horribly wrong here. This used to be the place with the hot girls, always naked and putting on fun shows. Well most of the a team is gone and the b team has been eating at the all u can eat buffett. The accumulated poundage throughout the staff is stunning. Word is they cracked down on the Yaa Baa users and the girls started packing it on. Maybe it is true. Hats off to management for trying to tackle the YB problem but let’s face it - who wants fat girls dancing naked? Not me. This was discussed earlier this week here
Had a few different friends in town and they wanted to see the lineup. For me right now the money is on Rainbow 1. The prettiest girls, the best bodies and good music. Honorable mention to R3 as well but I think R4 and R2 are crap right now.
Angelwitch - Can u say time warp?
Wow. It has been close to 2+ years since I set foot in Angelwitch. As I mentioned last week I saw no need to go in but this last trip I was with a buddy who was dying to see if one of the girls he knows was in. I tried to get out of it but I said what the fuck - I am going in.
I won’t diss the place but I will say this. What is so special about it? They are doing the same thing they did years ago but some of the girls are fatter, the mamasans are for sure and the staff is as well. Sure there are some new girls but no real hotties. Music is the same - even seems like the same playlist. Add to that the place is not cheap and one wonders why people go? The crowds are not what they used to be though but I blame that on the overal decay in the plaza. The only positive I can say is the girls get a little more naked than they used to during the shows and during the normal lineup - many of them are topless. This is the only place like that in the plaza. My next AW update will be in another 2 years. FYI.
Hoping to hit some new clubs or the scene across the river soon. Stay tuned.
Other Bar Bits:
- Sin Club on Suk Soi 4, the rooftop bar across from soi Mango, is possibly calling it quits. There were rumors that it was for sale and now apparently they have begun moving some stuff out. Quite a rocky few years for the bar that was once one of the hottest in Bangkok. They were in fact the number one After Hours destination for a few months. If this is true it will be missed. It was a nice venue with good Pool and decent food.

- The Sukhumvit Pool League kicked off this past Monday. Not surprisingly, we lost. In fact, we got creamed and are now 0-1. The lovely Oh did win one of her matches but that was it. We played Pool 13, which is a new bar on Suk Soi 13. Nice bar with five really nice tables. Unfortunately it is their first time in the league and they didn’t know about how good the players on the team should be. They had one Thai guy that is probably a pro. Luckily there is absolutely nothing at stake so we still had fun losing.

Try the caroussel in nana plaza ( or whatever the name is, the one on the third floor about over angelwitch ), yes I know it used to be the worst bar in the world and i went there only because a good friend of mine convinced me.
Non stop shows, quite a few hot girls, good attitude and people inside. The shows are mostly naked ones so yes it can be done in the plaza.
Definitely a very good surprise ( went there on a friday night about 10pm ) check it for yourself.

Got an SMS last night from a girl I met on Tagged (see Young Penfolds submissions)I’ll call her Girl A. I had never met her just sent a few messages and exchanged numbers. She was going to be at a thai club near my home and asked me to join her and her friend (Girl B). I hopped over there to meet her. Her friend was better looking and spoke better English, while the girl that I had been in contact with was really really shy. Now here is where it gets interesting. Girl A starts touching my shirt, near my right shoulder. I ask her if its dirty. She just points at my shoulder, starts talking to her friend and pointing. Her friend comes over with her mobile for some light and they keep staring. Now it is dark, there are strobe lights and then I hear “Lipstick”. I look at my shirt but can’t see anything (I later looked in the mirror in my apartment with ample lighting and sure enough there was a full set of red lips up near my right shoulder.) I really have no idea how it got there.
Well Girl A was miffed and took off for the bathroom. When her friend left Girl B started laying it on thick with me and then gave me a cheers and said “I think we’ll be good friends” (this after knowing her for a whole 30 minutes. I ended up leaving early, but Girl B called me from her phone to tell me that I shouldn’t contact Girl A anymore. Notice she called me from her phone, so now I have her number. hmmmm…..
Lesson to be learned: check your shirt for lipstick.

Doesn’t the Offshore on Soi 23 share facilities with the Fish and Chip Shop? The latter was the only restaruant I’ve been to in Bangkok where i didn’t finish my food. Truly terrible. I had a half frozen pie, microwaved mashed potatoes and mushy peas which actually looked and tasted as if they had been left to soak in the nearest klong. A non-brit told me that the place was “authentic” - really?
Outside of Oh my Cod, I haven’t been able to find any decent mushy peas. Any ideas?

Okay, first things first. Me and Mrs jyy visited the Big Mango Bar at lunchtime, a couple of days ago. I had been revving myself up for a Mango Mc Muffin, I’ve got to say it was the Mutts Nuts. Mrs jyy had the Ceasar Salad and gave it a very high rating.
A friend of mine tells me that he usualy calls in at the Cocktail Club at the end of an evening in Soi Cowboy, and recieves one of the best bj’s he’s ever had. Last time was a week ago, so they are still available, and at a bargain price 500 baht.

@jyy: I’ve been told “no” the last couple of trips to Cocktail, most recent was Monday night. Had 3 girls rubbing my nuts at the table, so they weren’t the shy, retiring types. They all said they don’t do the toilet BJs any more. Mabye some of the other girls do? More investigation required, I think.

I had a visit to Cowboy this week, Low and Behold the dancing twins at Rawhide had me smitten. I ended up with Dang. The short one. Nice time for sure. Shark bar had some Hotties, but I just got cold feet there. Baccara has some Cuties on the Top floor, but at 4k baht short time. -Whoa!

With regard to the matter of the nature of freelancers, my two cents.
Although I am not offering this up as statistically valid - I have hired less than a thousand freelancers to date, but I do hope to have something like those numbers in the next year or two.
If you divide freelancers into career women who are working a lot, and dabblers who are supplementing other income by stinking their toe in the P4P pool, I think you get the greatest contrast (and the most meaningful distinction).
Regular freelancers normally come from bar experience and many of them are out of the bar because they could not accept the heavy hand of the mamasan or manager. I understand that because for the most part, the management treats all but the superstars like second class citizens. It is not just my fat thighs that prevent me from taking to the chrome pole. Sometimes too, they just do not get along with other girls. They work a lot, and it is from this group that you will find the better pool players because in pool, practise makes perfect.
If you want to bring in the sweethearts, you need to consider some other kind of attraction program. Something which will enable them to come in groups and not feel too much pressure. Food and free cab fare would help, but not sure what the activity would be, if that is the model you are looking to fit.
If you have a pool tournament, you are going to get the steady workersas they play the game all the time. One of the great features of the best freelancer venues is that they attract the “sideliners.” If you can bring them in, all of the rest is going to be easy.
If you do bring in side line girls, I may be able to quickly make my number and publish my research for peer review. Maybe The New England Journal of Whoring.

Re the “Dark Side editorial; as one of the impartial observers of some games, I am able to speak with some authority on the event. Those of you who know me could attest to my complete disinterest in the result, or indeed, any of the players, perhaps allowing for a slight zeal (I think slight zeal is an oxymoron) regarding one player.
Not withstanding any of the above, I did note some anxiety in some of the ladies. A state of heightened anxiety is known to produce some kind of pheremone that others of the same gender identify as a “setting boundaries” scent. Perhaps many a hypothalmus was saturated beyond the understanding of we lesser mortals. Ergo “darkness” descends.
Perhaps the Venusian dark side is as deep seated as that of the Martian urge to piss on a post, or 2, or 3.
There were some very seriously determined, and eventually, disappointed players. Overall I think they withheld their primal urge to jam the cue into an opponents eye rather well, even in defeat.
Well done all round I say. Darth Vader may make an appearance next time, but I think this was a pretty good gig.

RE the dark side: I have met a couple of ‘hardened’ TG’s and ther was nothing alluring about them. They obviously had spent a lot of time around farangs, and had the elegance and demureness of truck drivers. One of them surprised me by talking a great deal about business in Europe (obviously her official sponsor was active in the field), while mentioning various places around the world she had (been taken) ‘traveled’ to. The most difficult thing to explain for me was, this gal was a pitiful 6.5/10 tops in the looks department, as far as what is available in BKK; had a couple of kids, some (discreet) tattoos. I just don’t get her success with (obviously moneyed) farangs; perhaps, by being almost a farang, she offered a whiff of Thai-ness on top of a mostly Western outlook, which made her suitors comfortable?

j- I think the girls just learn how to work it. I see so many guys fall so easily - meaning they fall for the not so hot or not so great calls. I can recall my own early experiences and the things I put up with that knowing what I know now - would never have. Strange brew it all is.
