So much going on folks - sometimes it is hard for me to keep up with my own life - let alone keep everything rolling on the blog. Fortunately pmmp is on a roll lately and the blog is kicking. Drop by and see the new production from the Mango Studios - The Mango Game Show. Part 1 and part 2. Some funny shit - pmmp gave me my lines for part 3. Should be mesmerizing to say the least. PG with an awesome post yesterday and don’t forget the ever offensive YP on the prowl with tagged. Word is some new material should be coming from his recent trip to the bay of ho’s. Docbond on tap next.
8-8-8
We had planned to have a party on Aug the 1st with Empower headlining things but the folks that run Empower won a trip to Mexico to attend an AIDS conference - so we have to postpone until September but never fear. The powers that be, the man behind the mango curtain, came up with another plan. Party on 8-8-8. That was the American version for the date - here is the British one, 8-8-8. Throw in the Thai one for good measure, 8-8-2551. Got it. August the 8. Year 2008. Or the 8th day of August in the year 08. Clear as a bell?
The plan is to have a freelancer pool tournament. Only girls allowed to enter the tournament. Guys can spectate or do whatever else guys normally do. This will be an 8 ball tournament. Prize money will be 8k baht. 5k for 1st place, 2k for 2nd place and 1k for 3rd place. YP may be offered as the door prize. pmmp is still working the deal out with him.
We plan on doing happy hour all night long. More details forthcoming - soon as I get around to making them up.

Google been jerking the page rank chain again and we dropped a bit over there at the top 100 blogs site. Slight blow to my already fragile ego - maybe Anonzo will chime in with some kind words to really make my day. What I don’t get is what is going on over there at the Thai-stars top list. Seems we are kicking some ass there - we may even win a prize but the prize rules have to be the lamest ever:
To join this contest you simply submit your site’s URL on our mainpage and place one of these buttons or a textlink to http://www.thai-stars.com on your site’s mainpage. NO button on your mainpage = NO participating in this contest!
That bites. I don’t have links to other sites on the main page so what if I don’t want to start now? Oh well - guess I won’t win my prize but come to think of it - even the prize is lame:
3 TOP Websites will win a free banner advertising slot (125×125 px) on the mainpage of Thai-Stars.com
What kind of prize is it really since if I won I already have a link to the site on the main page since this is one of the top blogs. That is how the prize is one. Seems kind of a lame prize and gets even lamer with this condition:
The integration of your banner is floating which means if there is a customer who would like to purchase ad slot number one and you won this slot in this contest, your banner will move down to position two. Priority order: 1. Advertiser, 2. Winner #1, 3. Winner #2, 3. Winner #3.
Enough of that shit.
What’s worse than a MSFT Zune mp3 player - the Zune tattoo loser. Seems we may be seeing the last of him.
Had some time to go through listener email today and going to take this one on the air. JV from Sweden wants to know where to get a soapy. Here is my take on it. Not too many places still do a proper soapy but these places do. Ask for a soapy or the b course. JV we take paypal. Thanks buddy.
Victoria, Copa Cabana, CP2, J1, and Long Beach. The main thing is to ask the papsan for what you want and they can point you to the girls who can do it but the supply is dwindling.
Had an interesting evening with some g-club girls over the weekend. First we went here - very cool and then grabbed some street food later. Good fun. 3 girls. 2 single and one with their Thai boyfriend. Heard lots of funny VIP room stories and was stunned at the baht that gets offered to them in order to convince them to meet at hotels and condos. Quote of the day though came from same random white guy at the exhibit - I overhead him commenting on what those girls were doing with the dreadlocked loser. Yeah baby! White trash is the new black.
Keep moving along folks - nothing to see here other than the quote of the day:
I didn’t opt for any rear end damage insurance when I was buying. The “malicious or accidental chorizo-body separation” coverage was bought though just in case i pissed off the wrong Thai woman.
Smitty, I meant to comment on this last time you commented on the Top 100 thing… You guys moved down because of any decline in the blog’s popularity, PR or Technorati. Matt said there was a programming screwup snce the Top 100 was reborn (after the hacker attack) that wrongfully put New Mandala way down the list.
I don’t understand some of the rankings, as some sites with lower PR outrank ones with higher PR, but I think basically TFS2M is as high as its probably going to get. the 4 above you have much better Technorati rankings.
Matt told me yesterday that with this week’s Google Shuffle — my site now has PR and it debuted with a 3, so I’m pretty happy — the rankings are going to change again. Hopefully PG will land in the Top 20 (49 now.)

A Party, 08/08/08? Yes, the first time I will be in town when a Famous Mango Party will be in full flow. And my mates wedding reception somewhere near Khrung Thon Bridge the same night. Some lucky taxi man will be taking my baht that night! Who will be the winner? A wedding reception full of naughty hotel type Thai girls, or a Famous Mango Party? Let the games begin.

May I ask a question?
I’ve been reading your blog for quite some time and always found it interesting and informative.
I’ve been to the old Mango and thoroughly enjoyed myself.
Lately this blog seems to be the “good old boy” network blog. I am an outsider and always will be an outsider, but the blog should still be entertaining and for “us” (outsiders if you will).
The blogs have lost their flavor and I find myself skipping over much of them.
For example: Young Penfold. I understand that you must be a youngster who has found his way into the fold and everyone may be doting on you. But suffice it to say you cannot write a complete sentence nevertheless write a comprehensible paragraph. I don’t want to be mean to you but let’s face facts, you are not a good compositioner (that’s not a word). It’s not about being cool. It’s all about a readable piece. I am sure you have more substance and talent other than being the laughing stock.
Smitty, I am disappointed in you. Too much ego here. I expect more.
Pmmp. Good entertainment.
Only my opinion.

On the topic of upcoming BM events, and as BBB’s manager and agent, I’d like to apologise for recently advertising his “Open Wallet” night tomorrow (number 30). He has made it clear in a comment that this is incorrect. I’d especially like to apologise to those traveling into Bangkok at their own expense to take part in the now cancelled event (such as myself) whose tickets are non-refundable. But I am happy to announce, to replace the cancelled event, BBB’s First Annual Punch Me In The Throat night. I hope that those disappointed (as I am) by his sudden reversion to type will enthusiastically participate in the new event. That’s Bangkok Bad Boy’s First Annual Punch Me In The Throat night, tomorrow night (number 30) at the Big Mango. You’ll recognise him by the Come On If You Think You’re Hard Enough t-shirt.
See you there!

Smitty from the US: I find that Young Penfold’s stuff, as barely literate as it is, gets across the real feel and buzz of Bangkok more vividly than “better-written” and “more informative” pieces. And he’s certainly not anybody’s laughing stock (at least not that I know) - the guy’s just a total blast, and if you can’t get a laugh from him, then re-read a BigBabyKenny piece and take notes. There’s room for everyone here. And if you feel excluded from the (non-existent) “good old boy” thing, pull up a chair, write a piece, and join the fun. There’s a lot to be had.

smitty from america, I here ya but it seems to me that the blog at times takes a life of it’s own. Some of the content is not my thing but then the “is she or he” game show comes along and makes all worth while. BTW I am a “outsider” but have slowly joined the party.

pg - thanks for the info. Not too concerned about it since I think PR is becoming more and more flawed over time. I was more highlighting the silliness of the thai stars contest and the difference in the 2 lists.
auk - bring the hummer to the rajah hotel and then wetback will use his lowrider tuk-tuk to ferry the naughty wedding girls to the mango party. that should work.
smittyUSA - still waiting for the question. Your comment was more of a declaration. Not sure how to respond. With 712 posts, over 13k comments and 1000’s of viewers a day are u saying every post should be relevant to every reader? If so then I give up now since that could never happen. YP is not your thing - I get it. Other people love it so am I to not post it so u are happier but then others are not? Blogging is a tough thing.
On the insider’s club comment - not sure how to respond. The blog is virtual and physical so tough to always bridge the gap nicely. Might I suggest you author a blog post on this very topic. Should be interesting to read and I am sure it would get a lot of comments.
b - I would agree. it does take a life of its own indeed. I don’t think there are insiders or outsiders because that infers there is some exclusion going on. There is not. Anyone is free to comment, send email or write a post. So the insider feeling in my mind - is available to all.

Re: Smitty USA
You may not know how to respond to Smitty From America (frankly, neither would I, exactly), but this guy is still making a worthwhile point and you should give it thoughtful consideration.
The plain fact is that your blog has recently taken on the atmosphere of a place primarily for a few self-proclaimed cool kids who hang around here day after day goofing on each other. Sometimes their comments are pretty funny; often they’re not. Seldom, if ever, are they useful or illuminating to the rest of us. The occasionally thoughtful and generally appealing discussions that used to be featured here have been substantially washed away in a flood tide of these people’s self-absorbed prattle.
Worst of all, when an outsider, for want of a better expression, attempts to join into the conversation, more often than not he’s disdainfully dismissed with one variation or another of ‘not our sort.’ The FrarangSpeaks2Much is slowly but steadily turning into the Thai Visa of the 2:00am set, whether you intend for it to or not.
Smitty From America is absolutely right about one thing if nothing else: the blog has simply become less fun to read recently for those of us who are neither in this little club nor want to be. That’s just the fact of it.

The lowrider Tuk-Tuk is in the shop getting a custom candy paint job and a naked aztec chick airbrushed on the hood. I also have to get out those pesky lovestains from the upholstery but thats proving difficult since I can’t just have my cousin Jorge take it to his shop and do the work for a case of Tecate. Instead I have to argue and bargain with somchai from maha sarakham and hope and pray he doesn’t fuck up my paintjob. However, I do have the tricked out honda click with custom paint and a horn that plays “la cucuracha”. I can fit around 4 tiny thai girls on there at a time.
Smitty from Dubyaland- The blog is great fun so stop fucking complaining about it. i’m basically an outsider. I’ve never barfined or spent more than 15 minutes in Nana so my credentials are not impressive as some up in dis piece. Yet, I do find there is plenty of humor and useful information about the city and thailand itself.

“Smitty from Dubyaland- The blog is great fun so stop fucking complaining about it.”
(Sounds exactly like one of the ThaiVisa louts)
So, just like that, and with no interest at all in trying to understand what the guy is saying, complaint dismissed.
Uh…..I rest my case.

It’s not a case of disinterest, but of disagreement.
Yes, sometimes some comments can be a bit dull. Some threads drift off-topic and become of little or no relevance to the piece. That’s basically how blogs work.
What’s the solution? Turn comments off? Put every comment to a vote? Not really practical, nor is it a good idea.
If you’re finding the comments a little dull, how about posting an interesting one instead of a complaint?

smitty from America and OAH: Point taken. It is hard to stop the ‘insider’ trend especially when you’re inside but it’s good to get feedback on the way you guys feel. I don’t doubt that it’s true so we’ll keep an eye on it.
I’m not going to defend the blog too much since we’re not splitting atoms here but I am a bit surprised that you feel the blog is slanting too inside given the content posted since July 18th for example:
* 888, housecleaning, top blogs, mango studios…
* Mango Game Show - Part 2 - Is she a he? by pmmp
* The Pattaya Ghost - Issue #8: The Patpongization of Pattaya
* Tagged your it - Part 2 by Young Penfold
* Mango Game Show - Part 1 by pmmp
* Justin on G-Clubs
* More politics, breakfast and remembering Anonzo
* Surrounded by white trash
* C.A.T by bkk22
* Tagged your it - Part 1 by Young Penfold
* The Pattaya Ghost - Issue #7: Afternoon Delight
* Stay tuned…
* Need to give up the red meat by Daywalker
* Friday Bar Update
* Visit To An Issan Bar Girl Factory by Pants Elk
The ‘outsider’ thing aside I thought the blog was putting out some entertaining, diverse and perhaps useful information, well, as useful as this information can be that is. I know OAH digs the Pattaya weekly which is cool. I wish I could deliver the Bangkok weekly again but I just don’t have the time to do it right. Besides, if you read the Posts day to day you get a pretty good picture of what’s going on here despite not having a structured weekly.
Anyway, don’t want to add to the boredom by dwelling on this any further. We’ll just have to tune it as we go.
MSB: Nope, no Federbrau yet. Not sure if we will stock it just yet.

I’ve read an academic research paper once (ok, skimmed through) that was dealing with blogs and hierarchies established in virtual communities, power plays, counter agents, etc. I don’t remember everything but it’s quite amazing to see opinion currents and counter currents forming in this most leisurely of blogs too!
I’d say, let the owners have their own personality show through too, so far I haven’t seen them censoring (as in: banning) anyone. I don’t really read it to be informed, but rather to be amused, to see how other people have dealt with situations I have found myself in too (or might convceivably encounter).

I understand those points being made above. However, this is a blog run by bar-owners and the overall feeling you get reading and contributing is that you are part of a community - not unlike a bar.
For my money, thats presumably the point of it and I think Smitty and Pmmmp pull this off exceptionally well.
In a real bar, there is always time put aside for some serious discussion and a good amount of time put aside for joshing and laddish larking about.
I joined in before I had met any of the regulars and enjoyed being part of it. Now I have met some of them I do feel part of an ‘innerish’ circle. There is also a tighter inner circle of guys who live and work in BKK which I will never be part of but this too is just like a normal bar (cries of ‘Norm’ anyone?).
Those that post the most and engage in small exchanges on this blog are the most likely to feel part of this community and it seems to me you can be an ‘e-regular’ - you can feel part of the community without ever visiting either the bar, or for that matter Bangkok.
Yankee Smitty and OAH often post thoughtful stuff but they rarely join in with the ‘bar-joshing’ stuff (presumably they are grown-ups).
If you are just looking for fact sheets I’m sure FS2M is frustrating to navigate, but hey, it’s a bar.

Although a regular contributor for 8 weeks now, I wouldn’t consider myself an “insider” as I’ve never been to the bar and never did any nightlife in Bangkok.
Way I see it is that there are a group of people who do go to the bar occasionally or more who have, in recent months, stepped up the number of comments they post. Sometimes the comment banter does fly fast, furious and pointlessly.
It’s kind of like on message boards with guys flinging back 1-3 word replies. It annoys me there (this isn’t MSN Chat, folks), but it annoys me less on this blog. Not even annoy really. Just makes be blow over it quickly, wishing for a bit more substance.
If the banter is on silly posts like the game show or Tagged, then it’s cool. If it ends up on more thoughtful pieces and takes things far off topic, then I think it’s less cool.
Dismissing others opinions straight out, particularly with profanity, is definitely uncool.
My blog is now 2 months old and gets, I’m sure, just a fraction of TFS2M and only about 10-20 comments a day. But I keep a tight rein on them. No profanity (with the occasional exception when it fits) and I do try to keep the comments moving the discussion forward.
Obviously, that’s much harder to do with the scale of this blog, if that were even the desire. Also, the content on mine is dryer/more serious/whatever, so maybe it’s not a good comparison.
If I was running TFS2M, I’d want to encourage an environment where people are not only informed or entertained, but would want to make sure they visit the bar and meet the people involved if and when they get to BKK.

Sheesh, the one point I wanted to make I forgot.
One thing that is lacking in the blog that I liked and read long before I started writing for it was the nightlife news in Bangkok. With Smitty’s change of interest and PMMP’s busy schedule, the blog is pretty lacking in Nana/Cowboy/PP nightlife news. Did you guys really want to cede all that to Stick?

Yes the weeklies were a good read, I miss them too!

grandma and ghost: Thanks, the weekly was a labor of love and the idea was to provide a consistent update along with all the other posts that could be all over the map. Will try to revive it at some point but time is a bit of an issue here. It’s good to have the Pattaya updates and we should have an equivalent Bangkok update.
One other thing Ghost, you said “If the banter is on silly posts like the game show or Tagged, then it’s cool. If it ends up on more thoughtful pieces and takes things far off topic, then I think it’s less cool.” - silly doesn’t necessarily exclude thoughtfulness. There are many ways to skin a cat on delivering information. Many forms are serious. Others involve humor. One could write “Isaan girls send money home to their families. Their families in turn use that money to buy land and in some cases farm animals”. Another way: “I tipped my short-time 1/8 of a buffalo last night”. You see? I would even argue that the silly statement is way more thoughtful.

as always I would say readers/customers say it better than I could. thanks bond and ghost.
bond - u are a perfect example that this is not an insider’s place at all. I always struggle when people complain about the blog since I bet most have never run one, never have written a post and don’t know the daily hours involved with keeping it going. I know ghost does now.
I appreciate guys like bond who fling out a post and hang with the banter. The blog is so far from where I started it - back in hk while working for the man. It has come a long ways but with that is a much larger audience and more complaining, more fluff and it is always hard to keep it on track but we do try folks. We get rid of tons of spam, we do delete comments and we post maybe 25% of what gets sent in.
At the end of the day though it is a blog and it is an extension of the bar. Not many examples for us to follow here since we are the first to openly blog the bar business and I think the busiest blog to be tied to a bar in Thailand. So it is not easy, it is not perfect but it works and through it all my skin gets thicker.
Keep the comments coming but I hope people can steer it to positive directions online and in the bar.
As to the weekly and nightlife coverage. We are simply just very busy running 2 bars and moving our lives forward. Just like with the Ghost I welcome anyone to step up and do a weekly bkk column. It will bring tons of readers to your site and will hone your blogging chops. I have not traded the gogos for other venues - I just have not had the time since we got a bar to open in the morning.
Anyway. Thanks all for the feedback. No matter what u all think we do listen, take it seriously and many times it weighs on me personally.

I am not an insider as well, i get down to BKK maybe 3-4 times a year. But for me its more of a community of some like minded individuals (we say NO to FAIWW and yes to hot young Thai women), we will not all get along but tolerate each other..
I miss the Weekly woo PMMP… it gave me more of a flavor of what was going on on ground zero while i am gone.
SmittyUSA - there are some articles on the blog that i dont read, they dont interest me (Tagged your it) … then there are some that have good content (Justin on G-Clubs), and others yet that make me piss my pants laughing (Mango Gameshow), and some give me the scoop on the ground (Ghosts articles)… i can go though the blog and classify them all but u get the picture. Smitty von US of A - First, it’s not easy to write like YP. Try it. I’d say it’s easier than doing good Dickens, or bad Kerouac, but it’s hard to do. I think it’s a pretty sharp voice that captures a lot of the fizz and fun of living as an expat in a very crazy city. More power to him.
Clubishness is programmed into human beings, get over it. We prefer the familiar, the known, that with common experience. I’m an OUTSIDER here, I’m actually slightly reluctant to bring a hooker back to my hotel, and suffered the slings and arrows I deserve here. I didn’t realise so many others of the ‘virtual regulars’ also felt like a tramp outside Harrods, at Christmas, with his nose pressed up against the glass.
I think lately a lot of posters have fallen into the trap of hailing scatology as genius, but there’s still some great writing in the submissions and comments, and long may that continue.
For the record the fact that there is a real bar at the centre of this blog - while the blog, by its nature, recreates the social intercourse typical to a bar - surely gives it that special quality that keeps us coming back. Postmodern and profane.

I dunno … if you’re looking for thoughtful, on-topic debate about issues of serious concern, with informed opinion from all sides building to a satisfying resolution … why look in the comments section of a Bangkok bar-based blog? There are many forums on the internet where you can induge your sophistry, pedantry, rhetoric and generally convince yourself you’re helping change people’s minds or add to the sum of human knowledge (the Barbie doll site, for instance). Comments to blog pieces are about as trivial and ephemeral as human communication gets, like remarks made across a bar and a beer. Would you complain about the standard of comment in a bar? Demand the remarks are kept on-topic? Nobody goes into the Big Mango bar expecting the lofty discourse of Oxford Debating Society. That’s why bar talk (and it’s internet equivalent, comments to blogs) is so fucking enjoyable. None of this shit lasts, it drops off the bottom of the internet never to be seen again. COMPLAINING about it is the biggest waste of time you can indulge in, a genuinely wretchedly pathetic thing to do. Next time you’re in a bar, indulging in a little facetious banter or attempting to get a point across, tell your co-drinkers they’re off-topic, and that the standard of their conversation doesn’t meet your criteria.

Just stumbled across this, which makes the 888 date a bit more interesting…
Thousands of heavily-armed Burmese security forces have been moved to the outskirts of Rangoon days before the twentieth anniversary of an uprising which came close to bringing down the military regime.
On 8th August 1988 Burmese soldiers are believed to have shot, suffocated and drowned more than 3,000 protesters after weeks of anti-government demonstrations.
The regime appears determined to stop any attempt to mark the date, which with four eights - 8.8.88 - is of magical importance in Burma’s calendar and of huge significance to protesters who two decades on are still trying to bring down a military government in power under a different dictator.
