Given that I am a man of the dreads - from time to time I make my pilgrimage to Khao San road to get my locks worked on. Since hair never stops growing you have to keep getting your hair locked as it grows out. I try to do this once a month or so. Some folks just don’t wash their hair but for most white folks even that won’t create uniform dreads so for me I head out to KS road and check in with my chief locker. He happens to be a Thai guy that after 2 bottles of the large Chang beers turns into Jack Sparrow - both in looks and in mannerisms. Usually we sit right on the main street - I take a low plastic chair while Jack gets to work on the dreads. This last trip though proved how trashy KS can be at times - trust me though it is not the locals but the white people.
Couple of other items first….

That depends how you look at the statistics. Only 35 percent of Americans over age 65 are online, according to data from April and May compiled by the Pew Internet Project at the Pew Research Center.
But when you account for factors like race, wealth and education, the picture changes dramatically. “About three-quarters of white, college-educated men age over 65 use the Internet,” says Susannah Fox, director of the project.
That’s a pretty big chunk and given McCain is a white senior it makes him look pretty much like an outsider but hey - at least he uses a Mac.
McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan presented a somewhat updated picture when contacted by The Associated Press on Friday: “He’s fully capable of browsing the Internet and checking Web sites,” Buchanan said. “He has a Mac and uses it several times a week. He’s working on becoming more familiar with the Internet.”
Now we have the NY times getting in on it all by denying to print an essay by McCain. Word is he faxed it in versus emailing it. Go figure.
Looks like inflation is really starting to affect the world. Think supersized mama noodles.
Back to the trash.
The first scene I was privy to was a couple of drunk brits cruising the street with their Chang bottles and 2 very trashy bargirls in tow. I am sure they picked them up outside Nana hotel the previous night and some how decided that touring KS with their same same shirts and a couple of lower suk hoes was the thing to do. Problem is they were drunk and it also seems they were trying to lose their girls. I only saw a small slice of the action but it was quite entertaining.
One of the guys turned around and told his girl to get lost. Oops. She started yelling at him saying that he just wanted to fuck other girls and why did he invite them to KS . She was not cute BTW and I am sure in the daylight hours he was getting buyer’s remorse. Can someone tell me why newbies end up with ugly girls? Go to a go-go bar - barfine something nice. They do exist. So suk girl kept yelling and started to pummel him with her fake oversized Puma purse. He kept walking. Smart kid but of course the Chang was bound to kick in at one point.
After being hit with the purse for the 100th time he decided to take action and turned around and pushed her to the ground but unfortunately he pushed her pretty hard and she hit the road and scrapped up her shoulder. Ouch. Too bad he did not see the cop standing right behind him who happened to miss the purse pummeling but was watching him throw her to the ground. He spoke no Thai and looked as guilty as they come and I am sure the Thai girl gave quite a story. I grimaced, getting redreaded is painful, and watched as 2 cops marched him down to the station. Can u say Wester Union? Funny how the friend left just as this was going down - I guess white trash does not stick up for their own?
I was assuming that would be all the drama for one night but no - it seems miss Hawaii, no offense OAH, decided to park her ass right in front of me. I snapped this shot so u could see what I am talking about:
Not sure if it is a good enough picture but it is a big ass. Love the tight jeans, pseudo platform shoes and the decorative belt. She probably made it herself using tools from the beach and palm trees. hmmmmm. Yummy. What you can’t see from this photo is her huge beer belly folded over her jeans.
I would not normally pick on people like this but given she was standing so close I was privy to her conversations. She is from Hawaii, works construction and is in Thailand to work in the movies. Yeah right. Someone has convinced her they need strong, female types to play the parts that the Thai whores cannot play. That is what she said. She plans on making 5k baht a day. She was happy about this and pointed to a couple of hot Thai girls who walked by and mumbled that I bet I make more than those girls selling their ass. I mumbled I bet u don’t but she kind of heard me so I had to shut up.
The whole time she was there she talked about the whores, how bad Thailand is and how she could not wait to make money here. I was rolling in my gut with laughter. The whole Thai crew around me was carrying on a conversation about how horrible she was, how fat she was and discussing how much money it would take to bang her. One of the guys said he would for 5k baht but that he did not want anyone to know. I was dying. U just can’t make this stuff up. Where do these people come from and why is it they think they have something over the locals and what kind of guys actually spend time with women like this?
This is not cougar material right?
Anyway. There are some cool places in KS but more and more I am thinking it is best to avoid the main street until I perfect my white trash repellant spray. The dreads should help. Enjoy.

by the way, do they have Kuza wax here in Thailand? i went through the dread phase when i was in high school (too much weed and mescaline) and that stuff worked really well. It’s a small can of beewax with an African continent shape on it. you could only really find it in the “black hair” section markets but it did wonders for budding shitlocks.

Here is what I don’t understand about some of your posts and why your partners tolorate you behvoir.
You are a businessman. Almost 100% of your customer base is white men. A certain goodly percentage of those are American of which approximately half must be Republican or Conservative or favor McCain plus those many, many American Vetrens that are in BKK who personally respect McCain as an individual for his courage during his POW days in Hanoi. Yet you frequently blast McCain and by doing so you are alienating existing customers as well as chasing away potential customers from patronizing your place of business.
It makes no business sense to me why your partners allow you to do this.
I have not decided who I will vote for yet but it will based on issue by issue and not age, color, or computer literacy. So the above is not a political commnet just a business observation

mid - Well - I am sure my partners will chime in if they feel they need to. Most would probably agree with me but hey what can I say. If I am alienating customers over this I have never heard it and we have quite a few vets who come and drink in the morning at times. Is there something wrong with freedom of speech?
Our customer base is all over the map and I would not say a bunch of them are american conservatives - in fact we have a lot of foreigners and they have pretty strong opinions about the political situation in America but I am struggling why we can’t chat about it here?

I have dreads too, but Thai style - locked on the inside. My hair on the outside just looks normal.
While it is easy to respect John McCain’s military heroism, I too think it is scary that computers and the Internet are less familiar to him than Viet Cong torture methods.
Not too sure if a business owner should bend their opinions to court market segments. If so, I guess you are sort of screwed with the white trash market. Maybe time to take the fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches off the menu.

I was recently physically assaulted by a Pattaya go-go bar owner and a manager of another bar he owns because I said the first guys bar was a) overpriced b) sotcked with silicone-enhanced, stuck-up showgirls and c) that the shows weren’t as good as Angelwitch’s.
Other bar owners have said to me “We know who you are and we know you own a business here in Pattaya, so we can’t understand how you can bad-mouth other businesses.”
There is no freedom of speech if the speech you are expressing is in disagreement with those who disagree with you. Republicans. Christian zealots. Pattaya bar owners.

midland: why do you think it’s bad marketing for smitty to express his political opinions on his blog? I rarely agree with his politics (US, Thai or others) but I love going to his bar.
I’ve never seen him cut off a reader from expressing alternate opinions in the comments section or by offering their own reader submission — in fact he sometimes seems to thrive on the debate. I’ve certainly taken plenty of liberties in writng political opinions in the comments section that smitty (and his partners) don’t agree with. I suspect I either make them frustrated or bored with my opinions. A more legitimate question might be why they tolerate contrary opinions on a site they control.

Yes the blog is a marketing tool for the bar but I am not a lemming and I don’t think our customers are either. Ever sit around the bar and hear people talk - people hardly ever agree with each other but still get along and drink together because they value the banter and the dissenting views. How is the blog any different than that?
I appreciate your opinion on the matter midland, but I have a hard time seeing how this is bad for business or why it is important for the bar that I only put forth bland opinions that everyone can stomach.

I run two small businesses and if there is one thing that some marketing professionals seem to fail to grasp time and time again it’s that too much marketing works against you.
They seem to believe that their methods are so clever that the great unwashed have no idea that they are being manipulated, whereas the more asute realise that running a business with a degree of openness and honesty is in fact exceptionally great marketing - get someones trust and get their business.
If Smitty, or any other businessman for that matter, was to stay out of politics and keep giving even-handed answers we would know that he was being very careful to avoid giving offence. We would realise that there was a degree of dishonesty in this - he watches his words too carefully because he wants all his customers to keep coming into his bar and putting money in his pocket. The results of such an obsequious approach would be a loss of respect, leading to a loss of business.
And for the record, if the US wants to regain some respect in the world the VERY best thing they could do would be to ensure that an aging white republican does NOT win. The world has had quite enough bullying from the Neocons and I can tell you for sure I wish we had an Obama to vote for in the UK so that we could claw back a bit of respect here too.

Banger- i get the drift but u seen to say this based on traditional schools of thought but i have never seen the mango, the blog or my life in thailand following traditional methods. I think most adults can discern this and would not relate this to time spent in the bar. Maybe some would but if u look at the post i merely highlighted am issue that everyone has been talking about. I dont think i mentioned voting or anything. Seems anytime we discuss politics this happens but i still say the discussions are worth it and most of our customers are not looking for the candy coated safe view of the world. I guess we win some and lose some. Which is reality. Just like the blog, the bar and my life. Not sure i see a reason to change that attitude now. Like doc pointed out - we are not trying to create a safe view for purposes of increasing biz. We are being ourselves which i guess is not always what people want? Fun stuff. As always the banter has been enlightening.

I have many clients that I debate politics with, and it has not hurt my business one bit. In fact as doctorbond stated, clients see me as a straight shooter they trust me with their assets because i am not a “YES” man, I am the guy that gets it done, maybe its my line of business or yours.
I respect someone that sticks to their guns rather than one who sticks to their shorts because of all the BS that comes out of it.

Note to WW…yes, I was a customer of the Old Mango. Stumbled in one day and had a great time. I actually found the bar before before the Web site. Sadly, haven’t been back to The Mango since then.

Can’t say I give a fk about Smitty’s politics; as far as I’m concered the Mango is chok dee. Plus, given the steps they’re taking to make it a bar of choice for the FLs, one’s gotta think it’s only going to get better (as long as the FLs are rational and act in their own best interests….. Its great when people drop in to the conversation that they “have an MBA”. Who gives a damn? I’ve got several qualifications but most of my business learning comes from “doing business”, just as my sex learning comes from LBFMs (much more fun, I say).
Last time I was in one, a bar was a place to go for a drink and conversation. Conversation requires opinions, preferably opposite ones. Smitty expresses opinions. Bad marketing? Don’t think so.
