So both the YP post and the BBK post are stirring up a storm and funny enough I think they both touch on the same things - trying to make sense of Thailand and the working girl scene. What I find disturbing is how quickly folks label girls prostitutes and some times I wonder if people really know the meaning of the word in the context of Thailand and Buddhism - I don’t want to hear that you cannot take this into consideration - this is not the Western world.

The term for for prostitute as found in Buddhist texts is sobhini, abbreviated form of nagar-sobhini, meaning a beautiful woman belonging to the city. In history this term is believed to be first given by King of Vajji and constituted in essence a professional position of state prostitute. To receive the title a woman had to be extraordinarily beautiful, learned, and well trained in the social arts such as singing, dancing, conversation, poetry, and in kamasutra - the art of sexual pleasure. Such women were desires of high class elites as well as by kings, princes and nobles.
Interesting to me that we throw the word around like it is demeaning or derogatory but not the case at all if taken in context of Buddhism and Thailand culture. Anyway. I plan on writing more about this since I think people are using black and white boxes for all this and the reality is that it is all pretty gray. Also - this is Thailand. I have titled it - When in Rome. Stay tuned.
Back to Nana. Tried the new Mercury bar. It sucked. Not much else to say. It was really, really bad. Hardly any lookers, a DJ gone awry and blunt service.
Then toured the Rainbows but for me the hotties are in 1 and 3.
Back to me. Harem building is at square one again. The second girl has been ejected from the harem. She was a nice girl to begin with, like with many Isaan girls though, she started to want too many things. A walk by a gold shop turned to talks of gold. milo - yeah. there are a ton of stories in there. It was all pretty interesting to watch the dynamics, marking their territory and so on. all in all it was fun. made a lot of notes for round 2.
suk - what I meant more is that people have in their mind what the word means to them. The circumstances, the treatment and all that. Seems one needs to know the background for the place they are in before making an ultimate decision.

I had a beer in the new Mercury bar at NEP the night after the fire (wasn’t me).
It was almost like being in someone’s shed, only with gogo girls and disco lights. And awful music.
And a guy wearing shades. In a gogo bar. And wearing a t-shirt that said “I Fuck on the First Date”. Possibly the most embarrassing tshirt in Bangkok - with the obvious exception of my “Bad Boy” tshirt…
I was allowed to smoke in Mercury though, which is nice. If you like smoking. In fact, the Rainbow bars are the only Nana bars enforcing the ban, as far as I can tell. Which is odd, given how most Japanese guys seem to be chain smokers.
@YP: A friend used to live down in NST. He got very bored. Hooked up a few times at discos I think, but he’d come to Bangkok for a weekend when he needed a decent night out and a gaggle of bargirls.
