Some of you who follow our exploits may have read that on the night we went to MTV club we stopped in at the Whitehouse to close the evening’s festivities. We were told the Penthouse girls were stopping by and FOD wanted to see someone so we bailed out of MTV and hit the Whitehouse. I have never been to the Whitehouse so I was interested in checking it out and since FOD has friends in high places at the Whitehouse we tend to get exemplary service.
The Whitehouse is located on Ratchada Soi 5 which is almost directly across from Ratchada Soi 4, usually the sois in Bkk don’t line up that well - just look for the giant neon lobster. The Whitehouse is located amongst the famous late night seafood joints that Soi 5 is known for. Some reasonable seafood to be had at almost any hour and lots of eye candy to boot. This area is famous for the mobsters and mafia types getting a late night feast with their kept women. I suggest checking it out some weekend night aroubnd 2-4 AM when all the Ratachada party girls, member club girls and the girls working the Ratchada massage parlors get taken out for a bite to eat.
Whitehouse is on the right hand side of the complex about a quarter of the way down. I think it is one of the older member club/coyote places in Bangkok but if I am wrong I am sure someone on the blog will set me straight. Recently they have been trying to make a go of it given the recent resurgence of the member club/coyote scene but Whitehouse has not kept up from a style or design perspective. The place is still pretty old school inside and could use some new furniture. The place is quite large but feels like a big empty concert hall at times. My guess is to really get back in the game they will need to freshen it up a bit more.
However I think this second class feel of Whitehouse has its benefits. The girls seem quite willing to talk to Farang since the place has less competition than most of the places. It is not rammed with rich Thais who you have to compete with just to get the girls to talk with you. From cruising around the room on my various bathroom trips I found it was much easier for me to chat up the coyote girls than say at places like Forte or Sopranos. My guess is that even though they want to sell memberships, one could cruise into Whitehouse, buy a bottle and hang out without much pressure at all. My revelation is that this could make a good coyote learning bar for someone interested in the scene, the girls and the various layers inherit in member clubs. Think of Whitehouse as your training wheels. The bands are quite good, they have about 50 coyote girls and some number of hostesses but I am not sure the deal with the hostesses. As FOD pointed out - look for the sexy, but insecure coyote girls. Easy prey.
The other nice thing is since it is on Ratchada it makes it easy to combine Whitehouse with a fuller night of options all in walking distance. Inch club is a 10 minute walk away. Dinner could be had at the Esplanade which has an abundance of girls to watch. You could cross the street and explore Soi 4 or hit Hollywood on Soi 6. For after hours you would need to jump into a cab and head for Poseidon as a landmark but look across the street for Renovate. This is supposedly the new place for girls looking to party after they close RCA or coyote girls looking to party after work. The possibilities are seemingly endless.
Quick note on this Penthouse thing. It is many times more fluff then substance since it has become somewhat of a Thai marketing gimmick. Penthouse mag is really the only world recognized nudie mag to be sold in Thailand but if you pick one up you will see it is quite tame and many times a local issue of Maxim has as many photos. So Penthouse “girls”, many of them not even Penthouse Pents are managed by people connected with Penthouse magazine and make the girls available for photos shoots, grand openings and shows at the various member clubs. Some of the shows can be pretty good and show more nudity than the normal shows but many times the local club girls are as hot as the Penthouse girls. The bonus is the party, the nudity and the sometimes competition that gets generated between the club’s showgirls and the Penthouse girls. Never a bad thing but don’t get too worked up when they mention the Penthouse girls since it is not always the real thing.
That’s it. So many places to check out. Been thumbing through the luscious photos in Modern Night and astonished as to how many places I need to check out. Thanks to the-adventurer for pointing out another.
yep. for that seafood enclave. is it really expensive? always been a bit “scared” to go. Are they all much of a muchness. Any specific recommendations? Are there any non-seafood options in that enclave?
Im always into hearing about 24 hour or late nite food options. Foodland soi 5 is the pits. Been there too many times. Looking for any way out. i think the worst thing for me is the staff - they such miserable m*therf*ckers.

This needs a write up!

t - the whole town needs a writeup but I can’t go out every night. Plan on hitting renovate soon. I am not into Poseidon. I think Victoria is a much better option. I do not much care for the Ratchada massage places. Param 9 has better options. As always we offer any reader the opportunity to write stuff up and get published on the blog.

all the places on soi have normal thai fair - which means everything as well as seafood. I think it is all pretty reasonable but probably not the cheapest in town. What is there to be scared of?
Foodland is what it is. Cheap and reliable. With menu prices that cheap I am sure there staff are paid peanuts. You would be miserable being a line cook at 4 in the morning dealing with drunk Farang assholes and their jailbait barfines as well. I still say it is a cheap place for eats though.

Inch club is the pits. Always too crowded and never much fun. Right next door to it is Baryan Tree. baryan tree has better music, a better crowd AND A PROPER DANCE FLOOR. THAT’S RIGHT, A PROPER DANCE FLOOR.
Great to mingle and easy to approach women on the dance floor.
Also, the women are better quality there. Almost guaranteed to find girl that isn’t into farangs, but can speak english… possible gf material, even. great gig material. One of my favorite bars in BKK… I have never been there in a group that is farangs only, though. You need to have Thai friends or speak both. preferably, both though.
Slide the guy who brings you to your table a red or a purple for a table by the dance floor- you wont regret it.
Also, Baryan tree offers hookah service, complete with special hookah staff that is dressed up like Middle Easterners….

was very dissapointed with the rooms for 1 thing at Poseiden. Was very short-time character. Dusty. musty. And generally bust. From looking at outside of building and from what id heard - expected some plush jacuzzi room incorporate.
Also - the “models” lounge….mmm. My girl was far off model. and the others i saw were as well.
Intending to check out Emmanuelle. Hope thats better than Poseiden. Will also check out Victoria. From their pics on the web it looks really flash place.
I think i prefer the massage places than the go-gos. I am going asian - i prefer not to speak to the hookers. I really have nothing to say to them.
Am always really scared of seafood in asia. i dont know in thailand. but in taiwan and singapore for instance - they really into eating very expensive exotic fish. Asian showing off really. pick the wrong fish - and your house is gone! the place may look very non-descript even - but some of the dishes will be so, so much. and then others will just be cents. With language issue - could come unstuck.
I think the staff at foodland are making a killing on tips (in thai terms).

Two options for all night eats in Sukhumvit area include:
The Italian Restaurant on the ground floor of the Jasmine Building corner Soi 23 & Sukhumvit Road (across from Shell station).
and
Sunrise Tacos, opposite side of Sukhumvit Road between Asok & Nana stations (near Soi 12 or 14?)

p - sounds like a good call. Need to skip inch and check out Banyan. Thanks for the tip.
t - Poseidon has seen its better days in my opinion. I was first taken there years ago by Thai businessmen and had an amazing time but that could have been just my newbie reaction to it all.
Seafood is easy and quite cheap in Thailand. I think u are safe.
ww - that place is open 24/7? Is it good. I love the tacos at sunrise.
jd - correct but I sometimes find my meal quality there is hit and miss as of late.

My favorite all-night restaurant/diner is on Suk Soi 11. It’s the first restaurant on the right after 7-11 when you make the turn into soi 11 from Sukhumvit. I forget the hotel it’s attached to but you can’t miss it. Their Thai food is really tasty and not expensive at all, 90-150 baht for most dishes.

PMMP: The 24 hr restaurant/coffee shop on Sukhumvit Soi 11 is adjacent to the lobby of the Grand Business Inn. Good spot to watch ladies coming back from the Spice Club (or STs) in the early am hours.

My favorite all night restaurant is on soi 23 (backside of soi cowboy) called Love Scene. Good Thai food and “live seafood” tanks at very reasonable prices. It is busy and has a good turnover of product so it is always fresh. Great to go after Cowboy closes and look at all the “couples”!

@zingy: I’ve eaten lunch at Love Scene 100 times, and didn’t realize that it was open all night. After reading your comment, the name of the restaurant makes a lot more sense!

Love Scene actually used to be a good after hours joint and a great place to pick up chicks. But it seems to have grown progessively quieter the last couple of years.

Back to Renovate on Ratchada if I may. Any more reports on this place and more specific details on the locale? Is it directly opposite Poseidon as in on the other side of Ratchada Rd near the Grand Hotel and if so, what soi? 16? 18? Or is it on the side soi beside Poseidon (soi 17 I think). Is it visible from the main road? How far in? Any signage etc, or low key. Is it only open late? The few taxi drivers I’ve asked did not know the place.
Unrelated question - what sports coverage / Cable TV etc is available at Mango Bar? Do you get the South African Super Sports channels, or just UBC?

dg - I have not been to renovate. Only know it is across from poiseden. I think in the bottom of a car park. Yes - I think is more of an after hours place for the ratchada set.
We have both South African Super Sports and UBC.

Cheers Smitty. Hope someone can advise further on Renovate. I’ll check it out myself if I find it of course.

A question: you state that the Whitehouse is located amongst the seafood retaurants opposite soi 4. However, I always thought that the soi with seafood restaurants is located opposite soi 6.

Just look for the big ass lighted neon lobster. That is area where the seafood and whitehouse is.

Speaking of Ratchada seafood joints.
Everyone here needs to stop by for a meal after 2 AM to see rich Thais and their (Uni?) girlfriends. It will put things into perspective. Both older and younger moneyed thais dining with some beauties.

p - so true and I love it especially for that. U also see some of the coyote girls and massage girls in there as well. U see the women most farang never get close to that contrary to popular belief - don’t work in the go-gos.

UPDATE — Looks like this ENTIRE place has shut down. I strolled past tonight and it’s closed off to the public and the restaurants are currently being dismantled.
Anyone know of another late night spot for seafood cravings? Also wonder what club all the coyotes will end up at next?
View all comments by anon
anon - yeah I am not sure what happened. Is the whole complex closed? My only guess is the property is just worth way more than the rent they are getting. There was not that many hot coyote girls there to worry about but the food closing is more troublesome.
View all comments by smitty
@smitty - I asked the security guard sitting at the now closed off entrance. He mentioned something about the entire place getting sold but he didn’t seem to have all the details.
Given it’s prime location next to a lot of nightlife, soapies, Chinese embassy, a MRT station, Esplanade Mall, Carrefour, and Tesco Lotus - my guess is another luxury condo development.
View all comments by anon
I would not doubt it - it is the bummer thing about bkk as of late. the nightlife will keep shrinking. THe say the same fate will soon befall Santika on Thong Lo.
View all comments by smitty
I thought Santika was off of Ekkamai?
I personally didn’t care for the layout and small tables.
View all comments by anon
my bad it is ekkamai but whether or not u like the place it should be mildly alarming that a very successful place like Santika finds that selling out to a condo developer makes more economic sense than running a club. Does not bode well for the expansive bkk nightlife.

That depends on the amount he was offered to sellout for.
Say you were offered 50 million baht for your share of the Duke Pub, would you do it? You could very well live off that amount and party your ass off the next 15 - 20 years in Thailand. Or you could turn around and reinvest it into another business venture.
View all comments by anon
Smitty is a smart cookie. If he was offered 50 million for his share of the Duke, he’d take it and offer pmmp 25 million for his share.

look - sure tough to walk away from big money but the trend of bars/clubs selling for money to land developers than they could get from running the business is a sad trend since it can only lead to less bars/clubs and more apartment buildings. Kind of a bummer really isn’t it?
dw - I would offer pmmp 20 first just to see if he is cool with it.

Good write-up.
This is definitely my agenda for the next Friday night I am in Bangkok.
How far is Ratchada Soi 4 from the JW Mariott on Sukhumvit Soi 3?
