Mango Weekly - 25 March 2007

The week was really getting on nicely but as often happens in Thailand shit happens quickly. I had a very distressing encounter in the Plaza this past Sunday with a bar on the first floor. It was one of their staff’s birthdays so they decided to set up a bbq and cook about 40 or so huge fish. The smoke and stench from the bbq was stinking up the whole plaza and really stinking up the Mango. Customers were complaining so I went down to ask them to stop.
From a pure logic and facts point of view they were totally in the wrong. The bbq pit was set up in front of the bar in a common walkway and it was adversely affecting the business of other bars. However, logic and common courtesy have got to be explained the Thai way which I didn’t do. Instead, I went down there all hot headed and demanded, in a calm way, that they stop this because it’s stinking up the place and I am losing customers because of it. They didn’t listen and in fact one guy got up in my face cursing at me and saying “this is Thailand, eff you…”. I asked to see the boss and they said “I don’t know where boss is”. I also pleaded with them saying that the fish stench was horrible and all the customers were complaining. The lady manager said “My customers like the smell”. My head almost exploded. Futility set in and I saw that they only had about 10 more fish to bbq so I just left. At one point I did threaten to shower the bbq with water balloons but quickly wisened up.
Extremely distressing to me was that they were so selfish and didn’t even want to discuss it. There was also a strong resentment of farangs that came out just because I had the gall to question them in their country. More like hatred actually but still I blame myself for not handling it better. I should have been more polite from the beginning and asked if I could help them move it to a different area where it wouldn’t affect outdoor bars. I could have also had one of my Thai staff or our Thai Security guy talk to them. I eff’d up but learned a lesson. Hopefully it’s not a lesson that lands me in the hospital or morgue. If it does I will make sure they have DSL so I can still get the Weekly out on time.

Bangkok Bar/Go-Go Update
After Hours Update
Interview with Nid
Tales From The Street
Big Mango Bar Update
Upcoming Events

Bangkok Bar/Go-Go Update
Nana Entertainment Plaza
Consistently closing at 2am.
- Pretty Lady. They are starting to get some beauties again but the magic is gone. This used to be the sluttiest and sleaziest. They still have the no underwear but the girls are rather shy and do the boring two step shuffle. The music is the same everytime I’ve been there the last couple of times. It’s really quite bad. They play that “who the eff is Alice?” song which is my least favorite song of all time. The cartoon porn is kinda cool though. Never get bored with that. For a slutty and sleazy time in NEP try DC-10, Sexy Night or Mercury instead.
- Rainbow 3. A few gorgeous ladies but many not so and loaded with Rainbow attitude.
- Mandarin. People, did you know that Mandarin has short time rooms ON PREMISES? I just learned about it this week. Haven’t tried them yet but hear they are the standard 300 baht for short time. Great music, some hotties, some random nudity and now this. Number one in NEP imho.
Patpong
- Lolita’s. I had a work assignment at the Duke this past Sunday and arrived in Patpong 20 minutes early. Instead of reporting to work early I naturally had to try out the new Lolita’s in Patpong. Even though I’ve been to Lolita’s on Suk Soi 8 I still get such a surreal feeling everytime I go. The new Lolita’s was no exception and a wonderful way to kill 20 minutes. It’s located right by the Foodland on Patpong 2 and definitely nicer than Soi 8. The bar area is very chill and the common area is much cleaner. It’s the same deal here, 700 for the BJ (I didn’t explore the short time options since I only had 20 minutes). I walked up and picked a lovely gal (the key to Lolita’s is to not be shy about picking a girl at the door, otherwise one will follow you in and you might not like her and have to send her back out). I bought her a drink because I feel a little weird about just walking to the back and getting right into it. The Mamasan came over and knew me from a bar on Suk Soi 4 where she worked as a Service girl. It’s a long story involving a hurt eye but she was extremely nice and helpful during our last encounter so I bought her a drink as well. After one sip I said I only had twenty minutes so lovely gal and I made for the common area, after lovely gal picked up some packaged and paper towels. The common area is a room with curtain dividers. You walk in, pick an area and the gal draws the curtains. After some prep work she gets down to business. They are amazing at what they do. I’ll leave it at that. I tipped her 300 baht (no, I don’t think that’s too much) and then paid the bill downstairs. It’s so funny how matter of fact the staff is about the whole process. Relieved, I reported to work right on time.

After Hours Update
- Spice Club on Suk Soi 11 is packing them in every night and there are tons of Freelancers in that pack. There is still no cover and the prices are the cheapest of all After Hour places. I expect that to change though. The negatives, nauseating strobe lighting, extremely loud music, guys selling roses inside the bar, and girls with a bit of attitude. It’s not bad attitude but some of them are there to party and not looking for Customers so you might get blown off as you do in a Disco back in your home country. The attitude of the working girls there to pick up is also there early on in the night but it breaks down around 4:30 or 5:00 after they are a bit tipsy and they haven’t hooked up yet. I noticed this phenomenon at Spicy as well. It almost pays to nap until 3:30am, shower, and then head over.
- New York Bar on Suk Soi 71 (corner of Soi 5). A new entrant to the After Hours scene. I met the owner during our Pool league match against them this past week. He was nice enough to give me a 10% off discount card and invite me down. We had heard about this bar via some e-mail marketing and wanted to check it out anyway. Many working girls live on 71 because it’s very cheap and it’s close to the skytrain. So, this place held some promise. It’s a rather large place with 4 decent enough pool tables, a bar, tables and a dancing area. It’s rather rundown though. I went there with two friends on a Wed. night and it was pretty dead. There were about 15 people there and not a single farang, for better or worse. The owner said there would probably be more people coming but that Friday and Saturday is when they get busy. It didn’t get busy by almost 3:00am so we split. I don’t see this as a very good After Hours destination unless you live in the area or it’s Friday/Saturday and the other After Hour joints are closed or too packed.
- The area by Mall Bangkipee that Smitty investigated a few weeks ago is no longer going After Hours. We went there last week and it was all shut down. Dang.

Interview with Nid
MangoBarStaff7-t.jpg
I thought it might be interesting this week to interview one of the Mango Girls. I have access so why not? I asked our Cashier Nid to assist me in explaining what I wanted to do and with the interview itself. However, after talking to Nid for a bit I found some of her answers quite candid and entertaining so I went on to interview Nid instead.
A little background on Nid. She is 26 years old and comes from Roi Et, Issan (http://www.amazing-thailand.com/NEast.html and http://www.amazing-thailand.com/Map.html for maps if you are interested). She is currently working at The Big Mango Bar as our Cashier and is going to Bartender school so she can do some Bartending as well. If you’ve met Nid you know she has quite the quick wit and an amazing sense of humor. As for her answers they are paraphrased a bit but frank and candid and straight from Nid.

pmmp: When and why did you move to Bangkok?
Nid: I first came here when I was 13 to work in a restaurant and then I moved back to Roi Et after a short while. However, I liked Bangkok and the prospect of making great money so I returned when I was 18. I worked a Company job for six years but was looking for something more exciting.

pmmp: What did you do after the Company job?
Nid: I had friends that worked in the Nana area and I was curious about the fun they were having and the money they were making. When I was 24 I had some problems in my life that I wanted to forget about so I was open to a new experience that would help me forget. One night I visited a friend at her bar and inquired about working there. It was the Hilary Bar on Suk Soi 4 and they had just opened. I stared working there as a Lady Drink Girl a few weeks after that.

pmmp: How was it like working at Hilary Bar?
Nid: It was different for sure but exciting since I like to learn about new things and meet new people. My first customer experience happened on my third day working there. A farang paid me to make a Passport for Malaysia and spend three days with him there. I made the Passport and went with him but we didn’t have sex because it was my time of the month. When we returned to Bangkok we got together finally but he didn’t pay me good so I was upset. My best experience there was with a young first timer to Bangkok. He paid 10 days of bar fines, gave me great money, and we had a great time. He also sent me money for one month after he left.

pmmp: What did you do after Hilary Bar?
Nid: I met a farang at Hilary Bar who wanted me to stop working and go to Massage school. He paid for my schooling so I quit Hilary and went to Massage school for 5 months. I never worked at a Massage Parlor though. Instead, I stared working as a Service girl in a coffee shop on Suk Soi 19. I didn’t like it and then started looking for a job in Nana Plaza as a Go-Go dancer. I heard the money was great and it was a chance to try something new. I went to Spanky’s and was offered a job. I then looked over and saw the Big Mango Bar. I thought that maybe a Beer Bar would fit me better so I went and talked to the Mamasan there (pmmp side note: we had a very tall Ladyboy Mamasan working for us at the time but it didn’t work out and we never hired another one. I don’t like Mamasans and although they help deal with girl problems I think they cause more problems than they fix). She offered me a job as a Lady Drink girl and I started the next day.

pmmp: How did you then become Cashier?
Nid: I didn’t like the pressure of quotas and having to sit with strangers day in and day out. It is very hard. When the Mango Cashier left I was offered the job as Cashier. It fits me better because I can talk to Customers if I want or I can just work as Cashier/Bartender. I am also learning more about the business and how to run a bar.

pmmp: What do you like most about working in a bar?
Nid: Playing the dice game with Customers is my favorite thing to do in the bar. I also like multiple day bar fines where I can go somewhere outside Bangkok and see new places. Life is boring when I didn’t work in a bar. Working a Company job or as Service in a Coffee Shop was very boring, and it was less money. Many farangs from all over the world come to the bar. I am a very curious person and always want to learn about new things. Speaking to and sometimes traveling with farangs can be very educational.

pmmp: What is your least favorite thing about working in a bar?
Nid: Farangs that bullshit

pmmp: What was your weirdest experience working in a bar?
Nid: I once went home with a farang man and his farang girlfriend. They gave me 2000 baht for short time and wanted to have sex with toys but I was too scared and declined. They were okay with that. They also wanted me to wear a special red outfit which I did. The sex was a bit weird as the lady was also there but I got through it. Even more weird was that the lady joined me in the shower afterwards. She was very sexy with light skin but it was all very weird.

pmmp: What do you like to do after work?
Nid: I like going to Foodland. It has aircon, good food, and I can get shopping done. If my friends are going out though I will go partying with them.

pmmp: What is your favorite drink?
Nid: Orange juice. Johnnie Walker Black if I’m drinking.

pmmp: What is your favorite farang nationality?
Nid: Netherlands because I’ve never met any farangs from there and I’m curious. I think the country is small and different which has always interested me.

pmmp: What do you like to do on your day off?
Nid: Go to the spa where I get massage and make my skin lighter. I think I look better in clothes when I have lighter skin.

pmmp: Do you exercise?
Nid: I will if somebody pays for my membership. I do like everything healthy. I eat healthy foods and drink herbal drinks. I also love sleeping. Thai ladies love sleeping.

pmmp: Does size matter?
Nid: No, but the size of their wallet does.

I just want to thank Nid for being so candid. It did cost me two lady drinks but it was worth it. Nid is extremely bright and a beautiful person inside and out. She is also a key part of our business and I wish her all the luck and happiness in the world.

Tales From The Street
- Tale1: Friend A received an sms from one of his Giks (eff buddies) that said “Would you like to see me tonight?”. My friend replied “I will if you send me an MMS with a picture of your pussy”. Sure enough two minutes later the MMS with bush arrived. He did live up to his end of the bargain and I did get to see the pic so everybody is a winner in this tale.
- Quote1: “Can you beat up my mother like you did last night?” - 2 year old son of Friend A’s ex-Girlfriend who was mad at his mother and referred to the previous nights sounds eminating from their bathroom where he thought Friend A was beating the crap out of his mother. BTW, they were having sex in the bathroom because it was just a one room apartment.
- Joke1 (thanks to Steve-ex-Nigeria): There were three guys stuck on a remote island. They find this genie bottle, rub it, and out comes a genie who grants them all one wish. The first guy says he really misses home and his family and wants to be sent there. The genie grants him his wish and sends him home. The second guy asks for a mansion loaded with money and girls that adore him. The genie grants him his wish and sends him to the money and ho filled mansion. The third guy scratches his head and tells the genie that he really enjoys the quiet and peace of the island. It’s a true paradise for him and he is happy right there. However, he tells the genie that he misses his friends and wishes they could be back on the island with him.

Big Mango Bar Update
- Customer of the Week:

- Big Mango Kitchen Specials:
o Pork Cordon Bleu with mashed potatoes, gravy, and mixed vegetables - 190 baht

What about giving the guy 700 baht for a Lolita’s run to knock off the grill? Work out a deal with Lolita’s for some prepaid coupons; a kind of co-marketing thing common in the states with Pizza Hut, only Bankok style. Announce he is the winner. He knocks off the grill in return for the coupon. He gets blown, and you get your customer base. Oh well, just a thought.

Great idea but why exclude Pizza Hut? I know I was pretty hungry after my 20 minute Lolita run last night. I think the Pizza Hut motorcycle taxis can also come in handy here.

    Re:- Interview with Nid.

Along with Nids bubbly and addictive smile and personality, you failed to mention her kind and caring side.

She was most upset when her Buffalo was taken ill. I hope the money I send her each month helps the Buffalo on the road to recovery?!

I’ve still not forgotten the ‘bet’ I won, when (and it was only ever once) I actually beat her at ‘dice’.

Nid…. A ‘credit’ to the Mango!

Oh, I c, her name is Nid. Darn it, I am so bad with names, I think I never caught her name again when I came back to Mango in February for that beer, food and chillin’ out. Point being that I was so damn stunned when she jumped from behind the cash register to greet me and ask how long I have been in the town, and how she knew I would come back. Damn it, I had been in Bangkok 6 months earlier in 2006 and all I had done was come to the bar to EAT three times and drink a beer or two…Amazing, just amazing memory she has(sure I slowly remembered that I had indeed seen her before but it just was WEIRD).

Definetly coming back again for that food and beer. :)

Sorry to hear that, you definitely had the right to point this out to the manager. I am sure they wouldn’t like it if you interfered with their bar (maybe next time you should blast some Beethoven music their way and see what happens). Just kidding……

But, my experience in Thailand is that “shit happens” sometimes and often unexpectedly. It’s part of the charm of Bangkok, unless the shit is happening to you!

I was sorry to hear about the Farang resentment attitude they had. I would like to know the bar involved so I can avoid the place.

    Rock on,

Doc - It was Lollipop (half cut Ladyboy half Lady) one of the many SHITE bars in Nana Plaza owned by the Crown group. They also own all the middle beer bars on first floor, Voodoo, Carnival, Fantasia, G-Spot, Obsessions (Ladyboy), Cascade (Ladyboy), and Hollywood Rock 1st floor.

As you can see they are the Cancer of Nana Plaza which is probably why I went in hot headed.

    Re:- Nid…

Correct… Nid (as all Thai girls) has a great memory.

Partly helped by having all our photos stuck on a board behind the bar (”I was so damn stunned when she jumped from behind the cash register to greet me and ask how long I have been in the town”)which the owners make them study for hours on end. They are ‘quizzed’ each week and have cash incentives to study hard.

Some of the photos have our names on them also, but one thing’s for sure.. we all fall under the name ‘Stupid Gullible Farang!’

    Keep smiling Nid ;-)

I’ve mentioned it once before, but a former Mango cashier who hadn’t seen me in five months spotted me shopping in Panthip Plaza recently. She hailed me by name as I walked past her Japanese food shop. I, unfortunately, had to ask her where we knew each other from, but when reminded, I immediately recognized her fantastic smile. (It’s good to see that they take the customer pics with them when they move to the next job.)

You’ve restored my faith in Thai Bar Girls. I was getting worried for a minute. Although, I once heard someone say that not all Thai girls should be trusted?!

If you are gonna ask the girls a more sexual question… I think you should start with the ’swallowing’ one..?!

Come to think of it…. you could find out who does what, then create a ‘color code’ for the t-shirts. Issue them to the girls without them knowing the significance of the colour……
i.e Girl in blue shirt takes it up the ‘nought’?!
Girl in red swallows?! Girl in green, aint a girl?!!

I’m sure ‘M’ has already thought of that.

Right must dash, I’m have a meeting with my bank manager….

    - Any idea ‘roughly’ how much a 100 acre farm with 50 buffalos, 2 pick-up trucks and a motorbike will cost?

    Nid…

Holy Crap is that her name i thought it was “NIT” its ok i have been know to screw up names.. I think i called a girl by a diffent name for a few days before someone told me to “at least know her name if your sleeping with her”…

Nit.. is a funny girl, her eyes tell of how curious she is. Plus with all those buffalos (Smitty, Pmmp, G) to take care of she is a hard worker. I did manage to beat her once at the dice game but i think she was not using her usual shaved dice.

Please let Nid.. or rather Nit.. I will send money for the Buffolo’s and the sick chicken, and for the one legged donkey (G) soon. I think last she told me that she wanted to open a Fish BBQ in Nana Plaza below Big Mango… sounds like a good investment to me…

**Holy Crap is that her name i thought it was “NIT” **

Rendering Thai names (or any word for that matter) into English is tricky, and often a bit of an art form.

Sometimes letters change sounds depending on position (much like bar girls).

A common girl’s name in Thailand is Gik, which can be spelled:
    Gig
    Kik
    Gik
in English. I’ve seen girls with this name use any of these spellings.

So let’s not Nid-pick about the spelling. Nit… Nid… As long as your buying the drinks she’ll answer the call.

If you live overseas, and you want to impress bar girls even before you start pulling foriegn currency out of your wallet, then on the plane ride over here study the Thai alphabet. If you’re not sure of a girl’s name, try to spell it back to her in Thai to make sure that you got it right. Even if you guess wrong, she’ll be so impressed with your ability to spell in Thai that she’ll probably go with you for free… well maybe not but you can always ask.

I’m guessing that Nid spells her name นิด.

If pmmp had written Nit, she would probably spell it นิท.

So, Nid… Do I get a freebie for guessing??? (You can keep your crash helmet on… you’ll probably need it)

werewolf - My understanding is that ‘Gik’ is more a description than a ‘name’.

    - I’ll leave the explanation to the Management! ;)

Well - I think Werewolf may be referring to a girl he knows whose name is kik I think but yes the term gik - did not bother to check the thai spelling refers to a girl on the side. Most times in the bargirl sense of the word it may be your pinch hitter or just friend with bennies.

More properly I was explained that it used to never mean having sex but was more a girl u can go to dinner and the movies with just for the purpose of having fun. Seems now it is used more to mean the girl u are shagging on the side.

Will try to grab the thai version.

    Daywalker

Gig, by any spelling is as common a name in Thailand as Som or Nok. I know at least five girls with this name.

In recent years it has also become a slang term of a somewhat loosely defined relationship with someone who is not your boyfriend or girlfriend, husband or wife, but still very close to you.

I need no explanation from the management.

    Thanks anyway.

    Wolfie….

Calm down sunshine!! As I said “It was my ‘understanding’….

And as I was informed by M&N (the guvs, not the rapper) I thought it best they relay the info.

I was not questioning or challenging your knowlege of the place we all know and love!

    Funnily enough… I know a girl called ‘Gik’ who wasn’t a g’friend.
So.. her name was also a ‘description’?! - In ’slang’ as you say!

Give my regards to Van Helsing :)

It seems my tshirt adventures have turned the blog into the discussion of the nuances of Thai phonetic spelling coupled with everyone’s version of Thai spelling but without the ability for Thai input.

Wow. Okay boys. Please no Mango Sauce like comment arguing.
Just too boring. But hell - would love to have more reader submissions.

    Anyway. Shirts are in folks.

I dropped into Big Mango early Friday to get my t-shirt. pmmp was kind enough to unwrap it and show it to my girl Nok who was with me. She looked at the front of the t-shirt and said, “Cheu arai… what’s that mean?”

She then flipped the shirt to the back and said “Ferang phut mak… yes, you talk too much!” and she laughed.

With just mild prompting from pmmp Nok agreed that she understood the front of the shirt, and that it was a good investment.

BTW, she lost her footing at the top of the stairs and took a nasty fall all the way to the landing (no pun intended). Thanks to pmmp and the rest of the Mango squad who iced her bruises, dried her tears, and assuaged her embarrassment.

I took her home and got her to swallow some ‘paracetamon’ and iced her wounds. Final tally was a cut finger, a nasty scrape on her shin that’s swelling beautifully, a large round bruise on her hip that’s already yellow, green & blue, and a golf-ball sized lump on her noggin.

We leave for a beach holiday today, so hopefully that will help heal completely. See you guys again next week!

Nid’s a wonderful asset to Big Mango, she’s definitely the classy type and I can’t imagine her any other way. When I’m back in Thailand I’ll certainly have to help her with her fears of the manage toi.

Cheers to all the wonderful folks @ the Mango.

WW - sorry about the fall. That sucks.

I did a test run of the shirt all day yesterday.

Had offers from the Thai stuff to buy their own in Silom and they all concurred with the spelling. They all got a kick out of it and understood the slang right off.

I did a quick Soi Cowboy run and got similar reactions. No one dinged me on the spelling and they mostly all knew it as slang for arai.

The best part was a quick run to Nana Disco where rather than do the loop I stood in place. As the girls did the loop they would walk buy, point at my shirt and tell me there name.

    was great.

trick is what to do for number 2.

get your shirt while they last:

Nok got even with me… I have spent two days of my tropical island getaway with a high fever, dizzy and headaches.

Nok is angry with me because I did not buy HER a big mango t-shirt, so please put aside the smallest one you have in stock and I’ll drop by this week to pick it up.

Meanwhile, 24 hours of beach time left, so out of the internet cafe and off to the beach!

back from the beach now. Nok wants the t-shirt with the cool SMS spellings, but she’ll probably make me buy her a Mango logo’d shirt as well. I’ll probly grab them tomorrow. Fever broke, so I worked on the tan today… Nok’s bruises are healing nicely. Keep some beer on ice for us.

**trick is what to do for number 2.**

    Some weak possibilities:

    A.
    จอชู

    B
    เข้าใจไหม

    C.
    ’size matters’

    D.

    That is the trick indeed.

I am actually selling some of the shirts to Thais cause the think it is amusing. So I don’t want anything too offensive and I wore mine(I have 2 now) to Siam Paragon and it was a trip.

Have to keep thinking it over some and get some discussion going. Plus I need to sell batch #1 as well

    :)
