Ah, Patpong. Bangkok’s original farang nightlife area. This place predates Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza, and no trip to Bangkok is complete without seeing it.
Patpong conists of two private roads (Patpong 1 & 2) off Silom Road. They’re joined by a couple of small connecting sois. In the middle of each road is a bustling night market, full of the same sort of stalls that block Silom road almost completely (I usually walk on the road itself to avoid them - watch out for tuk-tuks!).
The market stalls are staffed by persistent salespeople, who will insist that you buy their fake Gucci handbags, or pirate DVDs, or replica football shirts, or whatever. They’re annoying as hell, and the browsing tourists block your way wherever you’re going.
But they’re nothing compared to the pushy reps for the bars themselves. We’ve all had the persistent flower-seller, or tuk-tuk driver, or seedy massage rep bugging us on Sukhumvit, but these guys (and girls) are by far the worst. They’ll grab your arm, and tell you in no uncertain terms that their bar is the finest in Patpong, with the most explicit shows and the most beautiful women.
If you relent and go into one of the showbars, you’ll usually end up paying through the nose for a warm beer, as a bored-looking 50 year old Thai woman takes to the stage and uses her genitals to blow a whistle, write a postcard, or fire lawn-darts at your head.
However, I’ve recently discovered that some of the traditional gogos actually contain some of the most beautiful girls in Bangkok (and no, I wasn’t looking at the ladyboys). So it’s worth perservering with - just don’t bother visiting any bars above ground level!
One last thing though - unlike the ones at Nana Plaza, many of Patpong’s ladyboys are “post-op”. How confident are you that you can tell the difference?

Camelot was my first experience with nightlife in Bangkok some 12 years ago and I found it definitely GREAT!
Met some very nice girls there whom I used to take out when staying in TAWANA RAMADA Hotel just round the corner.
Over the last couple of yeras, if and when I went to Patpong, staying Sukhumvit area, I went to Thigh Bar. Also had some great ladies from that one, but after a while got too much involved with them and their internal quarrels.
Since then, never went to Patpong again.
Your page makes me change my mind, perhaps.
