Bangkok has three main “go-go” nightlife areas - Nana Plaza, Patpong and Soi Cowboy.
Located between Sukhumvit soi 21 and Sukhumvit soi 23, just next to Asoke BTS station (and Sukhumvit MRT station), Soi Cowboy is a pedestrianised (by night) lane of neon, girls, food stalls, the ocassional elephant, and more than thirty go-go bars.
Slightly cheaper (on average) than Nana Plaza, and far less hassle than Patpong, this is the nightlife arena of choice for many ex-pats and experienced tourists.
As in many of Bangkok’s naughty bars though, prices continue to head steadily upwards. Most of the bars will expect ฿110-฿140 for a bottle of Singha/Chang etc, and if you do fancy a take-away, expect to be quoted ฿2,000 short-time or ฿4,000 long-time by the most attractive girls. The more people pay these prices though, the more the girls will expect them - at least try and haggle. I won’t pay more than ฿1,500 (okay, ฿2,000 if she’s a supermodel) for short-time, for example…
Top Five
It’s a tough job picking them, and others will surely disagree. If you like getting off in the bar, you’ll prefer the hands-on bars (namely Sunshine/Afterskool, Fanny’s, Toy Bar, Jungle Jim’s and the Moonshine Joint). If you like watching the Patpong-style gynaecological exploits, head to Long Gun or Rawhide. Me, I just like cute dancing girls:

Baccara
The undisputed Daddy of Soi Cowboy. With the recent addition of shows on Fridays and Saturdays, this is without a doubt the place to be. The incredible influx of Japanese customers could make it an expensive night though - Shark runs it pretty close in terms of lookers (and offers better value) if you can get in there early enough.

The cuter girls are second only to Baccara, but Shark just doesn’t quite have the same strength in depth. Get to either bar early, and you’ll bag a stunner for sure. Hit Cowboy after midnight, and Shark bar will probably be reduced to the girls who were just making up the numbers…

Sheba’s
Along with Suzie Wong’s, this is Cowboy’s most expensive place to drink. Some good shows though, and similarly to Shark, there are some gorgeous girls just waiting for you here if you arrive early enough.

Long Gun
Still in the top five, but nowhere near its former glory. The Patpong-style shows remain, and it’s always rammed with customers, but the magic seems to have disappeared for me. The girls may be able to open soda bottles in new and exciting ways, but there aren’t many who I’d like to wake up next to. Still, you can’t visit Bangkok without getting a beer in the Long Gun.

Deja Vu
Cowboy’s newest gogo bar (although over a year old now), this is definitely worth checking out. Even their barmaids are cuter than the gogo girls in some of the other bars… Now features some very interesting shows on Wednesday-Saturday nights.

Many of the bars have rooms on site. For those that don’t, take your lucky lady to Penny Black (450 baht) or Asoke Place (300 baht). The girls all know where they are.

I looked every web page about Soi Cowboy and Nana Soi 4 go go bars but one peice of information is missing. I want to share a incedent I encoutered on those go go bars. On my 1st visit to Bangkok I went to Soi Cowboy and wanted to go in Long gun go go bar, but I was stopped at get, doorman toled me only members can go. I faced same kind of situation at Suzewong and some other go go bars. Later one of my American friend toled me that most of go go bars on those Soi's do not allow Indain visitors. Indain tousist like must be careful before going to have a fun on Soi Cowboys and Nana. Its lot of embaressement if you ar singled out among your fellow tourists.

Thailand is a racist country. Less than some, but more than others. It would be great if we could get a list of Indian-friendly and Indian-unfriendly bars, so that people know where they're going to be welcome, but as a white man I'm not sure how to go about finding out…

The bars do not like to let anyone in who looks local, and there are plenty of Indians living in Bangkok. There is a good chance it isn't an Indian unfriendly thing but a Thai unfriendly thing. I'm not sure of the real reasons - I've heard mention that the girls don't like to be seen at work by Thais but there might be police or press issues too. Although I've seen Thai men hanging out in the bars and being informed by girls 'They Police. No good. Expect to fuck for free'.
Doors will open if you go with a white face - I've had to escort Asian friends around before, but there isn't much you can do about the cold shoulder you will get from many of the girls if you have black skin.

SKIN - it due to the colour, every one wants a white skin like back home we all try to go brown, they like white. Its very much a class thing in Thailand, China, and surounding if you have dark skin then you are from the farm and therefore lower class. Thai rational thinking, you will never change it.

i dont see the fuss over baccarra, its expensive and the hostess girls are better then the go-go girls, some of the dancing girls are in bad shape. saying that i have had 2 freebies from hostess girls. im a fan of spice girls, 40baht a beer until 9 then 70baht all night, and iv had freebies from there too

@Stevie: Go to Baccara on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday before 10pm. Sit upstairs, right next to the stage (if you can - you may need to get here much earlier). Enjoy the show.
Everyone has different tastes, obviously, but I think some of the girls upstairs are some of the best looking gogo girls in Bangkok, let alone Soi Cowboy.
Spice Girls is a lot cheaper, true - this is reflected by the quality of the girls who work there.

i have to take back my comment about baccara being over-rated
i walked past there last night (friday) and the hostess iv been knocking off collared me so thought it would be rude to not go in for a quick drink as i could hardly say no and it was absolutely jumping, music was really good and stunning woman - maybe as i went before on a tuesday night there was a different pool of woman?? (do they have different girls at weekends?) as they had some of the best iv ever seen in there

If you have two girls, I would actually recommend heading out to the gay areas and catching a show there - somewhere like Tawan (2/2 Soi Tantawan, Suriwong Road) for the 10:30pm-1am show. Girls tend to love it and it makes them understand the attraction the girly bars have for us guys. Handsome muscled guys fucking on stage for their pleasure, and girls get a lot of attention as many of the guys are straight enough to go with women for a change.
If they still want to see the 'traditional' Bangkok sex shows, I think Long Gun in Soi Cowboy is now the best option. Only places I hear recommended for the shows elsewhere are the Queens Castle bars in Patpong and they are really, really depressing. Darts, birthday cake, trumpets, a few others. Maybe worth a giggle the first time you see them.

Forgot to mention - Drinks at Tawan are really expensive. Witness an entire bar full of people only occasionally sipping their drinks for fear of needing to purchase a second 300 Baht Whiskey Cola.

@Jamal: I'll second Kelvin… you should be welcome everywhere. Free entry, drinks in the 100 to 150 baht range. If you want girls to talk to you, you have to buy a drink for them. One drink for each girl you are talking to… 6 drinks can mean 6 girls. If you want them to stay, you need to keep buying drinks (they get a commission on each one you buy for them).
If you are a light drinker and drinking alone, you'll get by on as little as 600 baht. If you drink heavily, and buy for the girls or others, then a few thousand may be called for. You can do the math… multiply the number of drinks x 130 to get your cash requirment.
You generally don't need to tip much in BKK… say 20 baht each time you pay a bill, and you only have to pay your bill when you leave a bar, so if you're not moving around much, tips are minimal.
If you change your mind and decide to take a girl out, then you need to pay the bar to let her go (called a barfine, typically 500 or 600 baht gets her out for the rest of the night) and you will need to tip the girl appropriately. What is appropriately? That's at least 2 chapters in the Beginners Guide to Gogo Bars.

here is what happend to me last night.
i went to nana plaza and i get into one of those go go bars.
no entrance fee as you said.
after that i chose a Number and the girl come to me and i order a beer for my self and a lady drink for her.
less than 3-4 minutes she told that she must go to tiolet and after that she disapeard !
i wantted to try another girl but i didnt know who should i call for it ?
there were no servent around me.
i was the only costumer there but they even didnt look at me , i was very unhappy . finilly i raise my hand near 1 minute and its attraced one of those servent attention.

@jamal: Most girls are looking for someone who will barfine them and take them home (or to a short-time room) for sex. Simply put, that's how they make most of their income. Unless a girl particularly likes you, it's not really worth her time to sit sipping cola with you all night when she could be making real money from someone else.
One approach would be to tell the girls you might want to barfine them if they are fun. They might get pissed off when you leave without taking them though. Maybe you'd like the "hands on" bars of Soi Cowboy (see above) - Toy Bar, Fanny's, Moonshine Joint, Jungle Jim's and Afterskool. The girls are pretty full-on in there, but you need to keep firm control on how many drinks you're buying them.

@jamal: I had the same exact problem as you. In 2004 noone would look at me. I had to get up and tell the waitress i needed a beer and later on the bill. All the girls seemed too busy talking to each other rather than to me. There were only a few customers or none at all. I felt really rejected. I had every intention of bar fineing a girl and buying several drinks for the girls. ( I was a nice guy).
This happened not only in the gogos but everywhere i went. Resturaunts, clubs like bubbles, narcisuss, qbar, etc., everywhere i went i was invisible.
This really made me jai rawn. I left fealling really low. I am a young looking, asian- american, very fit guy. I look japanese. I thought it would be easy for me.
Since i saw so many old, fat, white guys, (no offense) getting served hand and foot. I percieved the problem was because i looked young and i wasn't white.
I was going to completely give up but i decided to learn the language and come back in 2005.

@werewolf: Sorry to leave you hanging about 2005. I thought my email was too long and i did not want to bore all of you out there.
I came back in 2005 feelling more confident than ever. The girls still ignored me but i softened them up a little with my new thai language skills. This impressed alot of the girls but i still had to work harder to get their attention. I still had this problem in almost every gogo, disco, and resturaunt from bangkok to chiang mai. So i decided i was waisting my time.

As an old, thin, white guy the only advice I can offer someone trying out the go-go-bar scene is:
- look as if you're there for fun, to have a good time. This is not always easy, especially if you're on your own. I know from experience that the unluckier you feel, the unluckier you'll be. Thai girls generally want to enjoy their work, and if it looks like you have problems, they're not interested. I don't think race, age, handsomeness have anything like the importance (with some exceptions) you might think. Just smile and have a good time and show your "good heart" and you'll do fine. I've been like a curse in some places, the doomed and lonely male hunched over my vodka tonic, and in the same places on other nights I've been a fanny magnet, and the only difference has been my mood. I don't speak Thai, I'm not Japanese, I'm old enough to be their dad, but when the mood is right I'm the happiest guy on the planet, and they have a good time too. Sex as guilt-free fun is an alien concept for most westerners (or further-westerners) but it's what your average Thai hooker wants - because it makes her work easier!

Jamal: If you are for real (I'm still unsure) then you shouldn't have to worry about HIV with girls you meet in Bangkok go-gos. If 40% of Thai bar girls in places like Nana and Cowboy really have HIV, then there would be a mass epidemic of AIDS cases amongst just about every guy who has visited Thailand in the past 20 years. The suburbs of Manchester, Chicago and Melbourne would be full of middle class white guys coming down with HIV.
Since that has not happened, then you can assume that as long as you play it safe you shouldn't have a problem. The 40% figure is pure fiction. As long as you don't do anything stupid (as in not wearing a condom) you have as much chance of getting HIV with the Nana/Cowboy girls as being run over by a car on the way there. I'd recommend using more caution with freelancers in clubs and street walkers. Thos girls may not be able to work in bars because they have health or drug problems. You also know less about them, making it easier for them to rip you off or steal if that is what they have in mind.
HIV is transmitted by blood to blood, which is why the sharing of needles amongst drug addicts is still the fastest way to spread the virus. Blood transfusions with tainted supplies has also been a problem globally in the past. Another significant cause of the spread of HIV is anal sex without condoms. Anal sex greatly increases the chances of small cuts or tears in the skin (of either party) that increases the chances of HIV crossing from one person to another.
Even with normal sex without a condom, the chances of HIV crossing from one person to another (especially from the girl to the man) are small, but big enough to recommend that you always use protection.

I don't want to come off as a whiny cry baby but i did an experiment.
I met a friend on suhk (please no offense another Fat, Old, White, Guy). I told him my sob story. We went into a small alley with bars on both sides. There were about 15-20 girls on each side. We walked side by side all the way down the line of bars. He had all the girls begging him to drink with them. I had 3.
I also like to dress to impress. I went to a silk factory store in chiang mai. No not the indians, Shinawatra. I had dress pants, nice shoes i bought at JJ's, and my fancy shinawatra silk shirt. I went to all the discoes and none of the waitress would serve me. They were talking to each other ignoring me. So i got up and got my self a drink and left a 100 baht tip to the bartender to show i was not cheap. Then another FOWG came in with old jeans and a tshirt. They were stuck on him like glue.
If i had a sour puss face i would have never been able to pick up all the "normal" girls. If my sob stories had happened a couple of times, mai bpen rai. But i have too many stories like this from almost everywhere farangs visit.

most of the bars are swarming with students or young office girls who are easy picking as long as you are the same age group and can relate to them
without being rude 'dressing to impress' especially with a silk shirt is not a good look - you need to dress quite fashionably and modern - a pair of dirty funky jeans with belt and a vintage thsirt from JJ market with a pair of baseball shoes will go down much better then smart shoes trousers and a silk shirt
plus a decent funky haircut will always help - if fashion is genuinely not your thing get a girl to go with you and she will help you out no problems (if need be take a bar/go-go girl)
you will get much better reaction if you look modern and if you get a girl in a bar with you, act cool - dont touch her and just chill out - its a fine line……. dont be tight with the drinks and money but same token dont be a fool and throw it around as they will think your are desperate and you have unlimited cash - there is middle ground

I know silk shirts are not modern. I live in one of the fashion capitals of the world. I just wanted a girl to think i was rich at least once. I know it sounds depserate, because i was. I noticed some younger germans wearing suits, so i didn't feel too goofy. I get my haircuts at paul mitchell. You know who he is of course. I can't wear those designer clothes. They are too tight on me. All the girls say i look gay. I am for real. Of course the ga-turees love grabbing my big man boobs. So i like to wear your typical tourist clothes. But i would be willing to help barfine for your help.

yeh i know paul mitchell - if ur in BKK i go Essensuals in MBK thats where i get mine cut and they do a good job
if your a 'big lad' and designer clothes are tights you can still dress well - plain shirt (not silk and not with lairy pattern), smart jeans and shoes - whatever you do dont wear shorts or sandals
yet again if your stuck take a girl with you she will be able to sort you out
if your going for normal thai girls remember that they are big on appearance and presentation so make sure you look smart and dont come across that you are trying to hard
follow these simple rules and you should be up to your nuts in guts in no time

@myspace: I shop at hollister and abercrombie. But their clothes look like the average tourist. Baggy shorts, shirts, and sandals.
My thai-thai girlfriend who is 25 sometimes likes to remind me of my lack of concern of trendy things. Where i live the casual look is what is in. Probably the same smart jeans and shoes you are talking about.
Where are some good places to buy trendy clothes that has cute girls all over the place in bkk? Im going to paragon, siam square, jj's, and as many as i have time.

@BBB: I have noticed the tech problems the past couple of days… it goes with the territory I guess. I wanted to mention, though, that for at least a couple of weeks your site has been slow to load on my 'puter, and very slow to move if I click on a specific comment (taking 15 or 20 seconds to switch). I ain't complaining, just giving you a heads up in case it is a universal problem and you aren't aware. In the past your site loaded quickly. Maybe it's associated with all the improvements in the side-blog…. maybe not.

Dark skinned foreignors in Go Go bars: Here is some advice after traveling to Thailand for almost 15 years, speaking fluent Thai, and being married to one. It is not tended to be honest as possible.
OK to Jamal and the Indian guy that posted.. Thai people lump all Indians, Arabs, and any other type of people that are not Negro(african) or White(Westerners) together and call them KHON KAAG. Westerners are called KHON FARAANG. Traditionally Westerners that can afford to travel abroad are not dirt poor, have a certain amount of money, and have good personal hygeine. With western christian values that don't treat women like dirt. During the past years there has been a influx of Russians and Eastern europeans. Some of these people behave badly and treat the women badly. Alot of them don't spend the money. Still many Thais Look at all white people as 1 people "faraang" and we're all the same……………To you guys who are darker skinned. Some of your countrymen or other countrys but similar race, don't take baths every day, don't wash their clothes often, and don't spend the money. Some girls have been treated badly by Muslim men. Then theres the whole terrorism thing. Thailand is a country which practices "racial profiling" If you look like someone else who did something bad you will get treated badly. Don't forget that Thailand has that insurgency with Muslim extremist in the south………..Another thing you might possibly run into is this………..Thailand is popular with military guys on leave…US, Brittish, Aussies etc… Alot of Military guys actually marry these girls. If you are a Arab or look like it, wear a bin laden Tshirt, and go into a Go go bar and stare or Glare at the big muscular white guys with short haircuts across the bar you may have a problem…………it has happened before and the bar owners know this…………There are Arab/african areas along sukkhumvit soi3 and deep in the walking street off to the left in Pattaya…….Everywhere else make sure you dress well, are clean, spend money, smile, be very nice to the girls, and if the bar plays rock and roll(not techno or dance music) be careful and try and have a white friend……….
One day everything will be cool and all races and people will hang out and party together in equality and friendship.. Today we only experience this at special times.

@kiran: Assuming you're Indian, I wouldn't hold your breath. Most Thai-owned bars will employ exclusively Thai staff. Farang-owned bars may employ a farang manager. Most don't bother.

If it's any help. I've seen Indian gents in Our Place a-go-go bar. The girls didn't seem to want to have much to do with them, but they had beers and seemed to be enjoying watching at least. I expect if they flashed enough dosh that the girls would soon show enough interest though!
