I am frequently asked how often the Big Mango Lady Drink girls undergo HIV testing or more generally how often do bar/gogo girls get tested.
At the Mango we require the girls to be tested every month. Girls can be tested at no charge by a clinic on Suk Soi 22 which also stamps an ID/Test card that is kept by the bar.
Other bars and gogo’s vary on what they do but most do ask the girls
to be tested. Don’t be afraid to ask the Manager/Mamasan of a bar/gogo
if you should so feel inclined. Testing is one of the differentiators
for a bar/gogo versus taking a Freelancer off the street or from a
disco.
This brings up the second topic of this post: Why do I pay a Bar Fine?
True, Freelancers on the street or in a disco don’t charge a Bar
Fine but they also don’t offer some things that help justify the 600
baht you will typically pay for a bar fine. Regular HIV testing is one
of these things as mentioned above. Other things include:
- Recourse for the Rip Off
If you read some of the web sites who
publish experiences and thoughts on Bangkok nightlife you will
undoubtedly hear stories that usually start with "I was really smashed
and I picked up this girl on Sukhumvit…" and end with "when I woke up
the next morning everything was gone and I had a raging headache…".
Well, in this case you have very little recourse for justice. Yes, you
can go to the Police and try to explain that it was a dark haired, dark
eyed Thai girl you met while you were wasted drunk. Or, you can hope
that the ID card she left with the Hotel is real and pursue it from
there. Well, these are pretty lonely and dark roads to travel. The
bar/gogo can at least provide you some possible recourse if the above
event happens. Before they can work in a bar, girls bring in an ID and
picture which get taken to the nearest Police station for verification.
They are also required to provide fingerprints. Sure, a girl can try to
fake these things but don’t really have to. If their intent is to rip
off people she has a ripe market of drunk farangs walking the streets
looking for some quick, easy and more affordable love.
- Is she a nice girl?
Bar Managers/Mamasans will get to know the
girls that work in a bar over time. If there are many customer
complaints on a particular girl she will probably not last too long. A
good question to ask the bar is how long the girl has been working
there. This may indicate that the girl is not so bad . No guarantees of
course. By the way, a related question here is "How good is this girl
in the sack?". Most bar owners will defer this question to the answer
above. You may hear "Well, all I know is that she has worked here for
six months and I have had no complaints". If you are adept at reading
between the lines you may look at the Manager/Mamasan’s facial
expressions while they give you this answer for some additional clues.
- Getting to know you
Bars/Gogos can offer a more consistent
venue if you choose to get to know the girl a bit versus the "meet me
short time me" route. Girls will typically get four days off a month so
you will most likely find them at the bar if you would like to pursue
the flirtfest that ensued on your previous visit.

I have a thought on rating girls in the bar, & a way which could help. I could take out each girl for an evening, covering eveything from wining & dining to the nocturnal activities. Of course I would expect this to be covered on the Mango expenses, & in return I would write a short A5 card on each girl, which could be duplicated, & submitted to customers on request. Me, always thinking!

I have always stayed away from bar fines.. Normally, i can pull a freelancer for around 700 baht. If the bar fine is 600 baht, and the girl wants another 1000, this brings my total to 1600 baht. This means that in the course of a week, i could either have 10 girls from a bar, or 22.8 from the street. I have also found a dumpster on Soi 3 that you can hide behind and save an additional 310 Baht on the room.
But… Thats just me.

RE the Saint comment, I have two friends in Sydney who make a business out of doing just that… Brothel owners in Sydney let the boys sample the girls for free. The boys write reviews and post them on thier website, where they pick up a little cash from advertising. They accumulate info on all the best girls and put it into a “Fireworks Report” that they sell to subscribers for an annual fee, and the report is updated quarterly. They’re not exactly getting rich off of it, but they each have free sex several times per week. They have been running the site for about 3 or 4 years.

They have asked me about doing the same thing here, but in Bangkok you pretty much go to a place (Nana, Cowboy, Patpong) where the girls are all in one place with no travel time wasted between shops, the girls are all on display, and except for the actual sex, you know what you’re getting before you buy. This is all pretty interesting. I have been hacking for a bit on an online bar rating system with multiple rating factors but not done yet. The ratings would be user driven of course. One of the factors I am contemplating is how good the place fairs when it comes to taking their girls “offsite”. Whether it be long or short time. Generally, in my opinion, I find the places with the known hotties to be the worst when it comes to the “offsite” experience - think Rainbow bars. Go to the less known joints,Hollywood in Nana, and I had one of the best short time experiences in years. I think these are interesting factors.
