Escape from Bkk Day 1

I had just returned from the party. Dropped my bag, repacked and headed out. A buddy was in town and it was time to party. Pattaya beckoned. I have a love/hate relationship with Pattaya but lately - the more I live in Bangkok the more I appreciate Pattaya. Going to Pattaya can feel like the way Thailand did for the first time. No one knows me, I can party my ass off, I can wander around with random bargirls in tow and I can basically just lose it. There is some value in that when working and living in Bangkok can sometimes lose its magic.

Hua Hin - okay. So the beaches are cool…

I used to cruise in from my hectic life in Hong Kong, have a pre-barfined girl meet me at the airport and head straight to Hua Hin for some R & R. I always brought my own with me to Hua Hin since I would plan to stay at a relaxing beach side hotel and of course it always helps to get a little before trying to fall asleep. Hua Hin never quite struck me as the place to pick up but after reading this on MS I was getting excited about the Big Mango Bar staff party. The plan was to close the bar, van it to Hua Hin, party down and come back. Boy was I ready for some strange.

Where would Thailand be without the women?

Well folks. I finished the “book that shall not be named” and I am not sure what to say. Somewhat feeling better about the place and somewhat confused. Would love to discuss it online, excerpt it a bit and just plain ponder over it with our massive, global internet audience but I am sure it would get me in trouble. It did get me more intrigued about Thailand though so I picked up another book which is an early history of Siam written by a French guy in the 1600’s and one thing stood out at me in just the first couple of chapters. The women always had the edge and in some ways appear to now. Continue reading ‘Where would Thailand be without the women?’

The cold shoulder…

Had a late evening off and decided to hook up with a buddy to start the cricket game off and later meet up with another buddy for a different kind of sport on Soi Cowboy. All great stuff but a certain little non-episode episode on Soi Cowboy got me thinking. A little house-cleaning first.

Head on over to BBB’s site and put your vote in for best Bangkok GoGo Show. I did. I am sure Dave the Rave is franticly trying to figure out how he can make sure AW wins but let’s hope the community will get online to vote. Use your mouse folks. Important stuff.

If you are looking for a place to catch a game and get a bite to it then check out the Down Under Bar on Sukhumvit Soi 23. A new little joint specializing in good grub, plenty of sports but no girls. Hey - some people want a no hassle spot. Talked to the owner and he tells me business is going good. I had the spring rolls. Tasty

Okay folks. We need to write a manual on how to understand the inner most thoughts of bargirls and how it leads to their baffling display of decision making. Let me explain last night. Continue reading ‘The cold shoulder…’

Where do the non-empty bottles go and other nonsense…

I was sitting at home getting some shit done and was cleaning up a stack of paper junk that tends to collect unless u specifically attack it and found a bottle card for Bed Club. I checked the date and realized that it expired within days and given I was going to be working on the expiration date I decided I better go see how much of the bottle was left. Showered and dressed I headed out on a Monday night to see how much Vodka there was since they only store bottles with 1/4 of the booze left. I figured I had a good shot of a cheap night out given I had not purchased the booze to begin with. The bottle was 3/4 full and it made me wonder what would have happened to the booze if I had never come back to get it? Continue reading ‘Where do the non-empty bottles go and other nonsense…’

Missing some beer kegs…

As we have discussed before - running bars in Thailand is full of little side-adventures that seem to have nothing to do with the actual business operations but are issues we deal with due to the strangeness of just having any business in Thailand. Sometimes these episodes are fun but other times they can be midly frustrating. I will let u decide. First some housecleaning… Continue reading ‘Missing some beer kegs…’

Mango Weekly - 25 March 2007

The week was really getting on nicely but as often happens in Thailand shit happens quickly. I had a very distressing encounter in the Plaza this past Sunday with a bar on the first floor. It was one of their staff’s birthdays so they decided to set up a bbq and cook about 40 or so huge fish. The smoke and stench from the bbq was stinking up the whole plaza and really stinking up the Mango. Customers were complaining so I went down to ask them to stop.

Phone Karma - I need some…

Famously been written about here is my bad phone karma and my in-ability to spell in Thai. I tried to explain the spelling issue here but I think it is time this phone thing gets discussed plus I thought I would toss in a movie mention and introduce the new phone since I figure it might help with the phone karma.
