Operation Nid, Pattayrag revealed, and malls suck

I love saying I am going to Pattaya for business. Just something sinister about it. I am mean sure - I will always fit in a little free time for exploring but since I write about it I tend to think of it as a business trip. Sucks to be me. Anyway - lots going on. Some serious rain today in lower Suk. Soi 4 all flooded. pmmp texted me to say that he had to go to the Big Mango and make sure we were not flooded. We laughed. Not our problem now but it is funny since the landlords in the old mango did nothing. Flooding - our problem. Power out - our problem. Leaky plumbing - our problem. I don’t mind taking some responsibility for our digs but the purpose of renting is that the maintenance of the building is the landlord’s problem. Just not the case in Nana. Anyway - if it is true that the hollywood dude is renting our old digs - I hope he checked the roof out since usually it floods like a beasty right into the landlord’s tailor shop. Hope u picked up your shirts yesterday.

What’s happening with Mandarin?

Nana could use a good story and apart from the Hollywood comeback on the 3rd floor it would seem Mandarin is the other comeback kid. Great music, spunky girls, partial nudity, peek-a-boo second floor ala Baccara and a general good party vibe. The downside of Mandarin though has always been the lack of any decent nighttime management and the security team that is connected with the guys that hang at the foot of the forever broken escalator. I myself have dealt with them back in the glorious Mango days and now it seems a unsuspecting punter has as well.

Another chapter behind us…

It is kind of a tradition for me now so I might as well continue it. It is the end of the year. Another one behind us. Another one seemingly looming in front of us. 07 was not bad but it was not great and I am hoping 08 is better. We shall see. Let us take a journey though - back to the beginning. We always forget how things start.

MRT Madness and can I borrow a 100 baht?

Between blow by blow election coverage, consoling myself after the loss of the MCLame breakfast menu and prohibition - I just have not had time to do much but I did have some fun last week that I thought I would share. The election is over and we can all get back to our regularly scheduled habits. Asia Times has some coverage of it all today and it is pretty interesting. Hopefully things will stay calm but I really wonder if any of this will allow Thailand to actually move forward. High season is here but most people will tell you this is one of the worst months on record in a while. The multiple no drinking days pretty much kills the bar biz.

Seems friskodude is glued to our top notch election coverage but still no inclusion of our site on his Thailand blogroll. DTR is not there either though so we both must be doing something right. I will press on.

Missing employees and some G-Club info…

Inevitably, in the bar world of Bangkok, funny things happen that must be shared. Some stuff I will take to my grave with me because there is no way I can share it without causing some grief for someone - maybe even myself. When it allows, we share a few tidbits about life inside the Bangkok bar world. Funny things happen - things that I never really thought would happen. Kegs vanish into thin air, taxi drivers steal barstools, and people fall in love. Here is some more funky stuff.

Fun in the bar biz…

The bar biz is never a dull moment. We go from missing kegs to missing barstools - now missing football games. Some of you may remember during World Cup Football time the big chaos over whether or not UBC/TRUE would be carrying the games and if there would be English commentary.

We wrote about that here: Chang Beer and The World Cup.

The gist of the story is that Chang bought out the rights and asked bars to pay some stupid sum of money to be able to show the games with English commentary. Screw that. So most bars went out and installed one of the South African satellite systems so they could show the world cup and all the sports in English with zero intrusion from local issues. If you remember, UBC would pre-empt the games for royal purposes. So most bars thought that after getting the new system they would be home free.

A weakened form of Prohibition

It is called Visakha Bucha Day or Big Buddha Day but what it means is bars are suppose to be closed and there should not be a drop of booze available anywhere. Please folks - this is Thailand. Ever know of a holiday u did not see a Thai drink on? I haven’t. Ever seen an opportunity for the Thai Police to make money that they passed up on? I haven’t. Anyway. A lot of things were closed yesterday, as a bar owner it was a mess but we managed to have a fun day none the less.
