Mango Weekly - 03 September 2006

I was sitting in Rainbow 2 one night last week with a few buddies and
it was the emptiest I have ever seen it. Certainly not good for Rainbow
2 but great for the few Punters that were there. The attitude of the
girls is dramatically different on a slow night in low season for sure.
The girls who normally wait for high paying Japanese clients tend to
slum it with the Punters when the bar is dead. It was shocking how much
attention we were getting. At that moment the Tina Turner song "Simply
The Best" came on and it fit the moment perfectly. Sure, we were a
little buzzed and it was a bit sad that we bonded with such a pop hit
but nonetheless it fit. Low season and mid-week in the go-go’s, beer
bars and After Hours clubs is in my opinion the best time to be in
Bangkok, Pattaya or Phuket. It’s simple Supply and Demand. Worth
experiencing if you get the chance.

This week:
Bangkok Bar/Go-Go Update
After Hours Update
One Year Anniversary Party
Tales From The Street
Big Mango Bar Update

Bangkok Bar/Go-Go Update
Bars in SC and NEP remained open until 2am minus one day this past week.
NEP
- Erotic Go-Go. Erotica has quickly become one of the best options in NEP. There are over 70 girls working there now. The third floor is your standard go-go and the girls are wearing jean shorts some nights for a change of pace. The glass ceiling allows you to check out the girls dancing in school girl outfits on the fourth floor. You can also hang out on the fourth floor and be overwhelmed with all of the new talent. Aussie John has got this Go-Go cranking and is now my top recommendation in NEP.
- Rainbow 1 and 2. The Rainbow bars are still solid. They haven’t reduced the number of girls in low season so the selection is quite favorable. I still dislike the staff and mamasan’s but if you ignore them and keep and eye on your tab you can relax and enjoy the show.
- Hollywood on the 3rd floor. It’s just not catching on unfortunately. They loaded the place up with some great looking girls a few weeks ago but the Punters are not coming. It’s also been hit or miss lately on seeing a good lineup when you go. One night it will be great and the next devoid of talent. Weird.
- Pretty Lady. Still closed.
Soi Cowboy
- Rawhide. They have really come on strong in the last month adding top talent and having some great shows.
- Cowboy 2. Some big girls bouncing around on stage. I went here for a friends bachelor party and didn’t see one girl I would pull.
- Sheeba’s. Good shows and a few exceptionally good looking girls.
- Shark. Best talent on SC and still my top recommendation.

After Hours Update
- Tequila Dragon on Suk Soi 7/1. MAJOR turnaround from last week. They dropped the cover charge nonsense and are now the top After Hours option. And get this, I was there with a few buddies pounding away and the Manager came over after about five rounds and bought us a round. My jaw hit the floor. They are also adding coyote dancers this week. I think this is a bad idea and hope it doesn’t ruin the vibe they have going. Nice rebound though
- Soi Tunnel. I am done with this place for a while. The past few visits was a mess. Mostly guys, pool table still going late, and people dancing on the covered pool tables. They are actually handing out flyers at the entrance to NEP now. This country is in such curfew denial
- Boss Bar and Sin Club. They were both closed a few nights in the past week. Instability in staying open has always plagued Sin and now it finally hit Boss. In more curfew denial, I took a taxi to Boss with some friends and the Police informed us it was closed BUT suggested another late night venue to go to. It was called something like CK Disco. We headed back to Suk Soi 7/1 instead fearing a ripoff situation.
- Suk Soi 11. Still packing them in but be warned this is not a safe venue
- Country Road Suk Soi 19. Still going late on the top floor with two pool tables and food. Not a great pick up joint but more a good hangout if you just want to drink, eat and play pool

One Year Anniversary Party
The Big Mango Bar celebrated it’s 1st Year in business this past Friday. Many thanks to everyone who celebrated with us. We actually began the day quite early with a visit from some Buddhist Monks (the earlier they come the luckier it will be). Most of our Thai staff slept overnight in the bar because they believe it is very good luck to greet the Monks after they spent the night there. I joined in around 7:30am because I needed a few good hours sleep to prepare for the party. Nine monks arrived in the morning and stayed for a few hours chanting, blessing, and then having a meal. It was all quite interesting and an enjoyable experience.
The rest of the day was party preparation and then we opened around 4:00pm. From the get go we were busy but not really ready. The food was prep’d but our balloon guy cam a few hours late, we didn’t have enough Beerlao on ice, we had the wrong Microphone and had to run out to get a new one, and the girls and staff were late and groggy from the night before. On top of all that, the white dresses we picked up for the party caught the girls by surprise when they tried them on. An undergarment run to the nearest department store was required. Yes, we will be expensing the G-strings.
Once the plane got off the ground though we were flying. There was free food, free pool, drink specials, prizes, and free Mango shots to get everyone lubricated. Dean Barrett and Stickman came by as well as most of our friends and regular customers. Many bar owners from around town also came by with one of them generously buying a round of drinks for everyone in the bar. We also saw many new faces that read about it on Dean and Stick’s site which was the only Marketing we really did for the party. It turned out to be a good idea since the bar was packed from start to finish with most of the people that helped us along the way. We did have one incident. A guy got really drunk, became beligerent and then tried to walk out on his bill. He eventually paid his bill as our Security guy was on his way over but then decided to take a swing at me. Luckily it was the slowest punch I have ever seen thrown and managed to duck out of the way. Our Security guy finally came and ushered him away. One other loser walked out on his bill. Bad kharma for those guys.
Once again, thanks to everyone who attended and for the gifts we received. It took us a few days to recover but we are cranking along in year two now. Pics will be posted in the next day or so.

Tales From The Street
A busy week and a load of new tales and quotes:
- A Punter friend showed me two SMS’s he received from a girl he recently met. The first one: "How are you today? I miss you". The second one: "Sorry, I sent to the wrong name in my phone".
- I was told about a recent trip to PP island where this Punter took a girl for the week. It turned out really bad for the Punter as he found the girl to be a lunatic. He told me about the many bizarre things the girl did. Among the funniest was how this prissy girl (and she’s not a bar girl by the way) didn’t want to wash her face with the tap water because she thought it was too dirty. Instead she used a bottle of 75 baht Evian from the fridge in the room. There were many bottles of complementary bottled water in the room and even a local cheaper brand in the fridge. However, she insisted on using Evian. Stay tuned for a trip report from this Punter on the many other interesting events that happened during the week
- I heard a funny one about a guy called Origami Man. A local Go-Go is being frequented by this Japanese guy who brings along with him a stack of 20 baht notes. He then takes a note and folds it into a little Origami sculpture and then flicks it to the dancing girls. He sits there for hours doing this and then leaves without taking a girl. Hey, whatever floats your boat I guess
- The insult of the week: Punter A was told by Punter B about a bargirl who was sidelined for two weeks due to being pounded by a well endowed Punter. Punter B sitting with Punter A and the girl Punter A was with last night remarked "I notice your girl is walking around just fine and with a bit of a spring in her step as well". Ouch
- A Bangkok Tale of Chivalry: I was told about a Punter that saw this other Punter holding a bargirl’s shoes hostage as they argued on the street. He knew the girl and swept in like a knight in shining armour, took her away from the evil shoe-hoarding monster, and bought her a new pair of Sukhumvit Specials. I almost cried when I heard this.
- Beware of the popular one-liner "You remember me?" from working girls looking to break the ice with you. Chances are they never met you and just want to get in your pants. Okay, so maybe Beware is a bit strong
- Quote from the Street: "I can’t think of greater mismatch than if Star Trek’s Mr. Spock hooked up with a bargirl here in Bangkok"
- Quote from the Street: "Her face looks like she has down syndrome but she’s a great shag"

Big Mango Bar Update
- We lost the fifth game of our Pool League and are now 0-5. Maintaining our perfect record still.
- Kitchen Special Of The Week: Irish Stew with Whole Wheat Bread

To answer scorpio-LA first, I think you mean Tong. You can see her at http://www.bigmangobar.com/pics.html . Yes, she is still around.

Sandman, Suk Soi 11 is filled with the drug crowd and with that comes unpredictability. Coyote dancing basically means girls dancing on tables or bars. On reviewing smaller bars, we will get to all bars eventually and are going to improve our bar index dramatically so you can get the latest on all bars. We are also planning on a User Comments option so readers can add their own comments. All in good time. On Spanky’s, I don’t know personally. I do have a friend that was very happy with the Spanky’s girl he met. He even brought her to the bar and she was a lovely little girl. And lastly, Soi Tunnel is our nickname for the Sanook Bar and is located in the walkway/tunnel between Suk Soi 5 and Suk Soi 7. Again, our new bar guide will help with locations as well.

I’m surprised that your review of the Rainbow bars would not include Rainbow 4. It has by far the largest number and highest quality of women in NEP, with some nights 90 barfines being paid. Patrons are obviously voting in droves for this bar, which is easily the classiest go-go in Bangkok. Is there some bad blood between you and the management of this place? As to Rainbow 1 and 2, 1 remains a good bar, but 2 has fallen to pathetic levels. I went there 3 nights within the past 3 weeks, at all hours, without seeing a single girl I would be willing to take.

Bare1, just to be clear, I didn’t review Rainbow 4 because I didn’t visit them this week. I have written about them in the past though. I have nothing against Rainbow 4, I just like 1 and 2 better, and I like 3 the least. They are all the same owners and share staff and ladies from time to time. They all share the same formula as well. Put up as many young and petite ladies as humanly possible on stage. Some of them even look like little Japanese school girls. This works. All 4 Rainbows do great business, probably the best in NEP. Getting these women is hard and they do it the best. Is it “easily” the classiest bar in NEP? It’s a nice bar but not easily the classiest. I’ve talked to enough Punters that have gotten ripped off in there by staff and girls, and who run about 50% positive experience with the girls there to give it a “notch above the rest” ranking. They are what they are. IMHO, good for perving not pulling unless you put in the time and find a nice girl. Also, they clearly favor Japanese customers. That doesn’t sound too classy to me.
