Mango Weekly - 13 August 2006

It was Mother’s Day/Queen’s Birthday this past Saturday. Thai people
and some farangs wore blue or yellow shirts to honor the Queen. Some bargirls made the trip to Isaan to visit Mom and the
family. Others had to work or just take the day off. Mother’s Day is
much like other countries but far less commercial than the US where I
come from. I guess that is true of about everything though. Flowers are
the gift of choice for the most part. I called my Mother in the States
and wished her a Happy Mother’s Day. She was confused but appreciated
the call anyway. Happy Birthday to the Queen.

Bangkok Bar/Go-Go Update
Bars in NEP had the option to stay open this past Saturday. Of course, this luxury came at a price. A price though that bars generally don’t mind paying given the extra coverage needed on a Holiday night. Mandarin Go-Go was open most of the night but when the Police came around to collect they decided against paying and were shut down. Every other bar was open. Soi Cowboy bars had no option to remain open. Patpong, who knows who cares. There will be a blog entry update on Patpong this week. Patpong is pure shite. Stay away at all costs. It encompasses just about all of the bad things Thailand has to offer.
NEP
Closing times remain 2:00am.
- Hollywood on the 3rd floor still have a nice looking crew working but it doesn’t seem to be catching on. I guess word hasn’t gotten out yet
- Angelwitch. I am a bit hesitant writing about Angelwitch since it’s the first go-go I went to in Thailand and have some friends there. So, I will just put in a quote from a friend of mine: "I really have come to hate Angelwitch and don’t go in there anymore. As soon as I walk in the door I am attacked by the 400 pound Mamasans, Security guys, DJs, and just about anybody I bought a drink for in the past. They are wolves and expect me to buy them all drinks otherwise they get insulted. I also get my leg humped and ear chewed off by the pseudo-Manager of the place. With all this going on I can hardly pay attention to the ladies there, which don’t hold a candle to the Rainbows or many of the bars on Soi Cowboy. The shows are also so done to death. This place was fine when I was a newbie but has now become a place I avoid at all costs. It’s starting to remind me of Patpong. Newbies get sucked in and eventually drained. Angelwitch is done in my opinion. I can get much better service in other go-go’s in NEP, Soi Cowboy and even Pattaya."
- Rainbow bars are best option for talent. The staff and management blow so watch your bill at all times but the amount of beauties they put up on stage cannot be matched. Rainbow 1 and 2 are the best of the four.
- Playskool has been rather lack-luster this past week. The talent level has gone down and the girls look very bored. A girl started crying on stage during our last visit after she misunderstood something a Customer said
- Carousel is a dead zone
- Pretty Lady is still closed
- Erotica John made a trip back to Australia and it shows. Went there twice this past week and it was a mess. No adult supervision leads to anarchy in a go-go. Bored ladies and terrible service. John will be back soon and will hopefully get it back into shape
- Cathouse has been closing around 11:30 and has generally been doing less business. Word about fights at the bar, prices raising, and some people not liking the new owner have taken a toll on the bar. The new owner is actually an okay guy and I feel bad that he got stuck with the bar. I personally hate what the bar does with the all-you-can drink specials. The alcoholics paradise breeds disaster as the drunk idiots wreak havoc after their over consumption. The previous owners were jackasses and painted a rosy picture when they sold the bar. In reality I suspect they were losing money and hated owning such a disgusting place. Many of the problems around NEP were from guys who started their night out at the Cathouse
- There was a Thai band playing on the first floor this past Friday night. It seemed to be a pre-celebration of the Queen’s Birthday. The band was hired by the Crown group beer bars on the first floor. The partying Thai’s though didn’t care about the other bars in NEP cranking the volume of their microphone and music to levels you could hear in Pattaya. It was especially annoying at the Mango as it overshadowed the music and conversation in the bar. Against the advice of my Thai staff I decided to do something about it. I was really pissed off that they could be so inconsiderate. I blasted through the partying Thai’s and finally found the jackass Thai Manager responsible. I told the idiot to turn the volume down immediately. I also tried to explain that his band was illegally set up, and that Farangs are the life blood of NEP and not a single Farang was involved with this little party but more excluded, and that businesses need to cooperate and not do things that hurt other businesses. It fell on deaf ears of course. They did turn down the volume and I didn’t get killed so it worked out okay

After Hours Update
Slim pickings I’m afraid when it comes to After Hours options. Soi Tunnel is a disaster. They keep one Pool table going, the dancing girls on the Pool table are mediocre and divert attention from what the place is, and the lighting changed from dark and mysterious to bright and swirling. A classic example of if it’s not broken don’t fix it, they really shouldn’t have changed a thing. They used to pack them in with a great girl to guy ratio. Now it’s half full with a lame crowd. We finally broke down and told the Management why we were leaving after one drink. Hopefully they will make the necessary adjustments because the place is a great After Hours option. As for the rest of the scene, Tequila Dragon on 7/1 is sucking too. The music was so loud my ears started to bleed. I bought the Bartenders and Manager a drink just to take the volume down. They barely did so I left. No big loss since we were the only people in the place. Sin Club on soi 4 also not doing well. The crowds are lame and the drinks expensive. Finally, Soi 1 Josephines started handing out flyers again so went to take a look. There were five people in the place at 2:30am so we didn’t enter. After all this disappointment we found a new After Hours destination champion, Sukhumvit. Yes, the street itself is packed with wandering talent and possibilities. We hired a traveling band at one point by Soi 11 to play some Isaan songs for us. Luckily there is no lame ass Management to destroy Sukhumvit like the rest of the places. However, there are always the men in brown.

Tales From The Street
A couple of quotes from the street this week:
- This guy comes into the bar with a Ladyboy in tow. I met him once before. He’s a nice guy and newbie to Thailand so I asked him about his companion to help him avoid a Crying Game situation later. His reply: "Yes, I know she’s a Ladyboy but she has a really small dick so it’s okay"
- A friend was asked this by his companion the other night: "I know I just had my period but if I clean it up will you still go down on me?"
- Another friend who I think was serious: "I only cum on girls when they are unconscious"

Big Mango Bar Update

- One Year Anniversary Party will be on September 1st. More details to come but it will be a bash of a weekend so mark your calendars
- We lost the third game of our Pool League to CK Sports Bar from 33 and are now 0-3. We now suck more than we sucked last week
- August Special: VB Beer for 80 baht
- Kitchen Special Of The Week: Roast Grand Mom Young Turkey with Potato Salad and Stir Fried Veggies

Did a story appear, then disappear? Sure I read something which does not seem to be there anymore!
Wish I was there for the party. Have a good one & thanx to you all again. Probably the best bar in Bangkok.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. I think you are still feeling the “special” Jack Daniels shot ;) Good seeing you last week and thanks for the tip on Liverpool over Chelsea.

The “Special” Jack Daniels drink which you kindly gave to me & Marty, was probably both after we had had a skinful of Mister Drinking. Us Brits are renowned for our Binge Drinking you know.
P.S Hope you don’t get any of the louts in your bar.
Don’t worry that Liverpool only drew today. Keep your eye on the Man City v Chelsea tomorrow. Any of you Bartenders fancy a bet!!
P.S You will have to allow me to join the Pool Team. I can be flown over two days prior a game, so I will be fresh, then stay two days after. I will only fly economy to keep the costs down for you. Me, always thinking!

Let me first say that there is no betting allowed in Thailand so I’m not sure what gave you the idea that we would want to bet on the game. :) On the Pool Team we are just about done now at 0-4 but thanks for the offer. Although, after seeing how you handle that JD shot I’m not sure how well you could handle the pressure.

hey check this one out… it could be true..!!!

A man and his ever-nagging wife went on vacation to Jerusalem. While
they were there the wife passed away. The undertaker told the husband
“You can have her shipped home for $5,000 or you can bury her here in
the Holy Land for $150.” The man thought about it and said he would just
have her shipped home. The undertaker asked “Why would you spend $5,000
to ship your wife home, when it would be wonderful to be buried here and
you would spend only $150?” The man replied, “Long ago a man died here,
was buried here, and three days later he rose from the dead. I just
    can’t take that chance.”

    Re: Betting In Thailand.
I know betting is not allowed in Thailand, & having had a brush with the Police before, I would not condone crossing the line. In England, betting means two things. Waging money on something, or to pose a question, ie, How do you think the game will finish, or who will win? No money changes hands, but we call it a bet. Just to clear that up for you all.
Shaun, how are you? How did you sneak in here? Keep up the good work & see you soon mate!
Keep your eyes out for Notts Forest.
    Question for all:
Back in the UK, it was good to taste fresh air. But how long does it take to get Bangkok out of your skin?
Also, on the way out to Bangkok, I sat next to Sue & Bob, an old couple on there way to Thailand to find themselves. Please, if anyone flying Thai Air from the Uk on the nightflight, this is so called so we can sleep, not be pestered for 6 hours about Go Go bars, girls etc by couples in there 50’s. Luckily, I flew back Business Class. Congratulations to Thai Air for the best business class in the world. Emirates, eat your hats.
