I am slotting this post under after-hours because the after-hours scene created the problem to begin with. So one of the issues with managing/owning/working in a bar/club/pub in Thailand is that when u want to party on a work night u end up going to the after-hours places since u need to close your own place first. So that means getting off late and say heading out around 1 or so to find a party or connect with your friends who don’t work and who have been partying all night. So very quickly, after pounding a few, one realizes that it is already getting late and could turn into a long night if one is not careful. Well here is what happens when this all gets out of hand…
Said manager heads out around 1 and catches a few drinks at Nana before the go-gos close. Then said manager meets up with fellow alcoholics at one of the after-hours spots and continues to down a few. Maybe more than a few. Hammered but happy said manager flies home and crashes. Typically said manager does not open up the pub and leaves that morning task to the accountant but the accountant was sick and had tried to call said manager more than a few times with no answer. Simple - said manager was still too shit faced to hear the phone ringing and was sound asleep. Well pubs must open and desperate times call for desperate measures.
Male pub employee wings over to said manager’s apartment and starts knocking on the door. Nice try. No dice. Male employee starts pounding on the door. Right. Okay. Kick the door in then to really get his attention. Imagine being said manager, not hungover but still buzzed, suddenly being woke up by a Thai guy kicking his door in to wake him up. Said manager apologizes, runs to the pub and get things open. I bet he forgot to comb his hair or brush his teeth. Imagine this scene in the States - someone would be in jail over this but in Thailand this is just par for the course.
