Let me begin by saying I am not a recreational drug user. I don’t even drink alcohol.
When I was younger, illegal drugs including marijuana were scrupulously avoided. I knew that someday I would likely want a career where a security clearance was necessary and would need to answer truthfully that I never used illegal drugs and be able to pass a polygraph on this question.
Later in life, I was never around drug users socially and never had much curiosity about them. Finding ways to enjoy myself and/or avoid clinical depression and boredom has never been my problem. ☺
Nowadays, I see clearly the dangers and downside of drug use and would never consider touching recreational drugs—the cost/ benefit calculus is not even close to adding up.

Pattaya Update Archives
Thanks to Ed of Pattaya Rag for another update.
editor’s note: Changed Bamboo to Buffalo. Typo. Sorry folks.
It’s been a strange week by the Bay. The no alcohol rule for Macha Bucha was pretty much respected by one and all but the same can’t be said for the Friday/Saturday closures for pre Senate, (Pattaya Mayor?) elections. On Friday, a number of go-go’s were open with no alcohol and if you wandered into the back sois you could find the real thing, drinks wise. The Naklua end of town (beyond the Dusit Hotel), was pretty much business as usual. Walking Street had more Thai ladies promenading than usual which I assume was the fallout from the bars that actually closed. With a bit of initiative, you could still find many of the vices that make Pattaya so infamous.
We can only hope that the no alcohol clampdown for next Saturday/Sunday is enforced in the same vigorous manner! Continue reading ‘Pattaya Rag Pattaya Update #4′

I once heard a description of Heaven and Hell. In the description, Heaven was described as being like a big banquet with all the best food and drink available, where you could sit and enjoy eating and drinking to your heart’s content. Hell was described as being the same as heaven, except that you were hungry and you couldn’t eat; all you could do was watch all the people in heaven enjoying themselves.
I would like to suggest that this is an apt description of Bangkok if you live here as a faithful husband.

Things are right busy these days and I can’t exactly explain why but hopefully it will all come together. I have not been planning to go out all that much but I end up going out anyway. Business in Thailand right now is just the shits. No other way to put it. Bar owners are not sure when to close, when to sell alcohol and when to allow smoking. You may assume that there is some agency or someone we can call to get these answers but that is just not the case because if they made all the rules black and white, enforced them equally and made it all public knowledge then the police would lose all their chances to make money. Frankly it is a mess and for sure it will continue to affect tourism and then next month some smart guy in the government will be quoted in the Nation explaining that tourism is down and they will spend 10 million baht to figure out why. Look folks - let me help. Quit shutting down the bars. Stay open later. Allow smoking or at least enforce the no-smoking law fairly. Quit telling Farang they can’t drink during election times. Last time I checked we can’t vote anyway. This place is mad. Anyway. More on the smoking ban later.

This thread was posted and readers could use it to comment on the various bars that may be open/closed or serving/not serving throughout this glorious election weekend.

I have turned comments off for this post so please use the Forum.

The city (BKK proper) can be a drag, even a burden at times; the usual haunts and hangouts dull and contemptuous with over-familiarity, that’s why it’s good to break up the routine and explore. Not that I’ve really needed an excuse to go out, but there is no better excuse to venture out and about than having a friend in town (Khun J.) and meeting up with another friend (Khun O.). Besides, who knows what one may find on the outer fringes of Swamp Town, you just might find or see something, well, um, Beautiful.
Case in point is Beautiful Club.
