This will be a many part series that we may edit or add to as we go. I think this may have to be turned into a permanent page on the blog but all in good time. A Guide To Bangkok Nightlife – Part 1
Bangkok is the largest city in all of S.E. Asia by far. With almost 10 million residents, and hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the world on any given night, the options for entertainment are exceptional.
This series of submissions is meant to be a guide for typical readers of the 2 The Big Mango blog to have a good time in Bangkok. It does not cover regular hotels or places to stay, places to eat or any of the usual tourist attractions. It does not cover the gay scene in Bangkok (there are other specialist web sites that do a good job of that) nor does it provide much information for Japanese men who have their own sections of the city to entertain themselves (especially Thaniya Plaza in Silom and parts of Sukhumvit Soi 26, Soi 22, Soi 31, Soi 33 and the back alleys around Ekamai).
This guide was written mostly in April 2007, and since the night scene in Bangkok changes continuously, certain pieces of information will probably be out of date reasonably soon. Check the web sites listed in this guide for more current information.
There is probably no other city in the world with such a high concentration of attractive women as Bangkok, and certainly few where so many of these women are approachable by foreign men of almost any age and income bracket. A very high percentage of Thai women between the ages of 18-35 are very attractive. They are nearly all very slim, with tremendous shaped legs, have gorgeous colored skin which is as smooth as the Thai silk, long black hair and amazing smiles.
There are large numbers of websites and books that document the good and bad of the meeting of Eastern ladies with Western men in the city known as the “Big Mango”. Any first time male visitor should spend time reading them, with the reader contributions at www.stickmanbangkok.com being a good place to start.
All male visitors are advised to exercise extreme caution when suddenly confronted with so many willing and stunning young women. Newcomers are soon swept of their feet and make many mistakes as they embark on their new relationships. Forewarned is forearmed, so it certainly helps if you know more about this city and the many places and ways there are to meet the delightful, smiling ladies of Siam.
This is not meant to be an exhaustive list of entertainment options in Bangkok. Entire parts of the city are not covered at all (such as West Banglamphu or Ramintra). There are bound to be favorite locations of many readers that have been omitted. You can help make this guide better for future readers by contributing to it and correcting the many mistakes it probably has.
It is also not meant to be a prescriptive list. Unless you have a year or so, and an almost endless source of funds, you cannot hope to visit or experience all of these establishments. Most of the places mentioned have been personally experienced by the author or close friends, but certainly not all – so there well may be quite a few ‘duds’ in amongst the mix.
This first section discusses places to meet Thai girls outside of the night scene, and ways of approaching them.
The second part of the guide provides information on places to meet working girls. This includes go-gos, bars, massage parlors, street walkers and special clubs.
The third part of the guide details the regular night scene in Bangkok, although there are certainly quite a few freelance working girls in that scene too.
One of the attractions of Thai ladies is that they have so many different looks. Everyone’s taste in beauty is very different, and it does seem as if many foreign visitors are attracted to a type of girl considered somewhat unappealing by Asian tastes (shorter, darker, late 20s). I have found that taste changes over time, as I become more familiar with the culture and language and fussy about the type of girl I want to spend time with.
A year ago I’d have been happy with the 29 year old, medium height, dark skinned lady from Isarn who already had 2 kids back in the province and likely had a few dozen farang customers in her time as a working girl – as long as I was having great sex. Today I doubt I’d even consider approaching girls a year ago I thought were gorgeous. I am now gravitating towards young (19-22), university student by day, coyote dancer by night, tall, long hair, light skin, has not had any farang boyfriends before, preferably bisexual (!), girls. I’ve only found one so far, but am having fun looking for more!
There does seem to be some kind of hierarchy of beauty in Thailand. Starting at the bottom, you have:
1. Street walkers in places like Lumpini and Sukhumvit
2. Thermae, Grace Hotel and Beer Garden Soi 7/1 typical girls
3. Most girls working in most massage parlors
4. Go-go dancers and girls working in Patpong
5. Freelancers in places like CM2, Hard Rock
6. Go-go dancers and girls working in Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy
7. Freelancers in places like Qbar, Spassos
8. Massage girls in top-class establishments like Poseidon (models floor)
9. Hostesses in Gentlemen Clubs (G-clubs) who are called “PR girls”
10. Coyote dancers in RCA and Thai-style clubs
11. Coyote dancers in G-clubs
12. Promotional girls working for booze companies or at trade shows (called “Pretties” in Thailand)
13. Glamour models for men’s magazines such as FHM or MAXM
14. Models, pop stars, actresses
And ranging across all of this you have the girls you see with normal jobs in offices who go to regular clubs across the city every night.
Of course, this is a gross generalization. Stunning young girls from the provinces who don’t know anyone in the city can be found any night of the week on their first job in any bar or club as they arrive in Bangkok. My longest relationship in Bangkok has been with a 19 year old Uni student who ranked at least an 8 on a looks scale that I luckily encountered in a bar that usually has a very poor selection and is well outside the usual locations. It was her first month in Bangkok. She would have been at home as an FHM model or a PR girl in a G-club, but had not been in Bangkok long enough or knew enough people to figure out the city. You will occasionally see gorgeous girls on any scale in a beer bar, and you will see girls that the Thais seem to think are stunning on TV or in celebrity magazines that appear very plain to most foreign men.

The gorgeous 20yo I came across in Sukhumvit Soi 23’s otherwise appalling Siamese Twins bar has probably been the choice quarry so far…

Would take the bi-annual visitor like myself a lifetime to really learn these places without the excellent reporting and a great deal of bribery cash/beers to work them out of Smitty and Nick!!

In response to Young Royal - there are two types of “Penthouse” girl. These girls are billed as star attractions at many clubs in Bangkok on a regular basis. I have seen a couple of so-so Penthouse girls (but with huge ‘noms’) turn up at a club and basically do a striptease and a little bit of girl-on-girl acting. Was a bit disappointing really. And I have also seen a full troupe of about 7-8 girls show up at top G-clubs and put on quite a rehearsed show, revealing much more than the usual dancers in the process. In the troupe, at least 3-4 of the girls are simply gorgeous, a 9+ on any scale. I have also heard that some of these Penthouse girls are available at some of the better massage parlors, especially model floor of Poseidon. That may be true of the strip act girls, but I don’t think it is true of the girls in the troupe!
And the tip about new girls even applies within established go-go areas like Nana or Cowboy. One of the cutest girls I have met in Cowboy was in Apache, which is otherwise one of the weakest clubs for lookers. She was smart - told me it was better to be a big fish in a small pond (best looking girl in a weak bar) than just another girl in a larger place. And just last week I talked to a stunner working the beer bars in Nana who had started work 2 nights before….and had never even ventured into one of the go-gos yet.

I hung out one night in Hong Kong with a tall pale skinned drug addled Thai beauty, who I’d have said was in the 12-14 category. She was out with an Isaan girl who appeared to be her maid, and an Isaan guy who was her bodyguard.
I had her pegged as either a rich kid or a minor Thai celebrity. We got on famously but she wouldn’t let on who she was, or if she was anybody.
So, what kind of Thai girls have bodyguards?

Mochalover hit it on the head about the Penthouse girls but I did see one in the mag that I was later introduced to that was one of the 9’s that does work at Poseidon but she says she only works 3-5 days a month tops. Most of her clients are people she already knows that book time with her at Posiedon. To see a girl that hot working massage is just amazing. She charges some 5-10 per session.

Yup. Also these working girls - hot as they may be - are nothing to the locals and the police. I know of a ladyboy who spent a year in a Singapore jail because her boyfriend said she had hit him but the ladyboy says she was beat on regularly by her boyfriend. Sing does not care - they locked her up anyway. I know of similar stories of maids and working girls in HK tangling with the wrong people and paying some price for it.

Great stuff! There’s always something new to learn here: one of the many reasons why I enjoy living here so much.
I’m only up to Level 7 as well, despite living just down the road from the big massage places in Rachada. I’m 5 minutes walk from Colonze 2 and have never been there.
Is the Grace Hotel coffee shop still attracting freelancers? That must be one of the original freelancer hangouts (along with Thermae) going back 20 years at least.
I’d add Gulliver’s in Suk Soi 5 to Level 2 - although Gulliver’s girls think they are a cut above those from the Beer Garden. Some of the freelancers start out at Gulliver’s and go on to CM2 or similar just before 11pm.
Two Coffee Worlds on Sukhumvit - one on the corner of 7/1 and the other just before you get to Soi Nana attract a few freelancers whom the management seem to tolerate sitting outside for a long time not buying much. Beware though - some are girls who got kicked out of the Beer Garden (maybe I’ll see the one who poured Sprite all over
me.) The Beer Garden management bans any girl who gets into a fight, gets complaints from customers or is obviously on drugs. I can’t say how consistent or strict they are though.
Interestingly the Beer Garden are checking the ids of young looking girls and excluding anyone younger than 19. That’s a fairly new policy.

Colonze 2 is not too great. very small.
Colonze - the main - is amazing though.
Grace is still going but I prefer the road behind it with all the girls hanging out waiting to be picked up. I have had 2 phenomenal pulls from there.
Thermae was not bad the other night. I actually think the Japanese now going there are bringing in some good looking girls. I did not try to pull though. But I saw some hotties.
They say that daytime the Gulliver’s on Khao San raod is jammed but I have not checked it out.

I’m really looking forward to this series. I get the impression that i kinda “got lucky” in my experiences in Bangkok (was kidnapped by 3 mangobar girls and never looked back), next time I would perhaps not like to leave it to chance so much.
This blog is always an entertaining read, and has me looking for flights and reasons to return sooner rather than later.

I’m at Level 10/11 without even knowing I’m that far up your foodchain! To be honest I’m looking to diversify or parallel trade because she works occasionally in Singapore (where we met and I recently flew up BKK to visit her), is a divorcee with child (but surprisingly has a smokin’ bod) and is starting to get rather clingy. I suppose the second point downgrades her to a 9?

Interesting points but I was not actually thinking of it as levels per say given that many times - the hottest girls I have been with are never near the best in bed. I guess the levels tend to relate to ease of access or how quickly they jump into the sack.
I am always up for multi-tasking myself. Makes for an interesting life indeed.

Regarding Combover’s question about bodyguards - another reason is fear of kidnapping.
About 3 years ago I was doing some business here and was invited in a group to a Rachada Soi 4 club (can’t remember the name) by a young-ish Thai businessman and his model-quality girlfriend. He’s from a rich family and hinted that maybe all the family money wasn’t all entirely clean.
He had a driver / bodyguard with him wen he went out clubbing. He said his father insisted because of fears he’d be kidnapped and ransomed. I don’t know how prevalent that is. It’s likely not in the newspapers much.
Our experience when we got to the club was amazing. Met by the manager and 6 brawny Thai guys in suits. Escorted to a prime spot and surrounded (”protected”) by the bouncers. They served us drinks and we got to watch the shows. The businessman told us that we could point out any of a group of girls at a nearby table and they’d bring her over for us. I didn’t partake as I was with a girl already who enjoyed herself hugely. I got bored with Thai comedians and katoey shows but of course the Thais loved it.
Some other club guests (whom I was told were models or TV personalities) came over to pay their respects.
Then the whole process was reversed when the club closed. The club bouncers were a bit rough making sure our group got out first and together.
Oh yeah, I also had the “shoulder massage in the restroom” treatment for the first time. (Visiting under escort). Fortunately my friend warned me what would happen, else I’d have hit the guy.
It was a pretty surreal experience for me. But yes, anyone who is anyone in Bangkok has a bodyguard.

Interesting. Sounds like another world but I assume places like that with those people exist all over BKK.
The shoulder massage is great providing they approach once I have started - otherwise I get stage fright and I can’t piss. Some of them are quite adept at popping my neck in just the right way.

im visiting thailand next october , its my 3 rd time , normally i spend sum days in bkk , 5 /6 days…i always stay in sukhumvit area..so im used to there and i really like it but i neve bEEn to KSR.wot about nightlife there?clubs / bars similar to nana plaza , soi cowboy etc?and wot about community and type of tourist?and is it busy same as sukhumvit?on last question…how far by bus or tuk tuk from KSR to sukhumvit? thanks for help….

@ arthur: Sounds like you were at Hollywood on Ratchada. I really think the bodyguards are for show. No one is going to kidnap you at Hollywood. I’ve seen this a few times and it’s quite lame. I work with some very wealthy Thai’s and also some that have siblings that are famous and none of them have body guards.

Since spotting a stunner can be sort of a right place, right time random process, is it advisable to know enough thai to strike up a chat with any stunner that you might run into in the course of going about normal business (i.e on the lookout but not on a hunt)?
It also sounds like knowing Thai is very useful if you are planning to visit a soapy MP since there could be a stunner or two there and they might not know much English. Arranging dates outside the MP could be difficult without knowing Thai?

It is not unusual for the most beautiful sexually atttractive girls to be the poorest performers in many countries. In general they have not had to try hard enough.
Regarding someone being at level 11 with a women who has a kid………..I disagree…….. a woman with a kid is a level one………..childbirth fucks upa a woman’s body and brain.
As for the Lumphini park/street girls. I had always assumed the pretty ones were too diseased to work in the regular P2P scene and had beeen banned, exposed etc……….However I notice one catergory of girl has been missed out from mochalover’s list: Chicks that have recently been discharged from psychiatric hospitals……..easy to seduce………….cheap or free……..no need to use condom…already emotionally damaged so no worry about hurting them…surely these lovely loony ladies deserve a mention…..
