Mango Weekly - 25 June 2006

World Cup 2006 has shifted into high gear. Ever since we got the
English Commentary the bar has been packed with football fans from
around the globe. Before getting the Satellite it was empty for the
games and really sucked watching the games with Thai Commentary and a half-filled bar. Now though it’s a joy. Screaming
fans and loud roars are music to a bar owner’s ears. Unfortunately it
ends soon, bumma. Overall, I still rank the England fans most
enthusiastic although the Aussies (or Skippies a nickname I just
learned about last night) have shown they are getting the bug too. I
guess there is a historical connection (side note: being a Yank, it’s
really interesting hearing the UK version of history versus the Aussies
version. Believe me, it’s not the same) between the two countries so
the love of football must be in the blood. Sorry about the loss to
Italy.

Cactus Club review

cactusclub.jpg One of Soi Cowboy’s smaller bars, Cactus Club is run by a friendly, jocular American chap with a penchant for huge cigars. A bottle of Heineken was ฿125, and the bar-fine is ฿500.

Cactus Club is affiliated with the Long Gun and Rawhide bars on the same side of the soi and as such, features “shows” in between rounds of regular dancing. The girls were well above average for Cowboy, and dancing was fully nude.

The shows in question were a little different from the usual when I visited - no gynaecological feats here, but a new twist on a familiar theme. The girls trooped onto stage in very skimpy “schoolgirl” outfits, when the lights were dimmed for our compére to announce that the “sexy show” was upon us.

Cue the girls leaping from the bar onto the tables around the bar, and offering customers a close-up view (and indeed a feel, or even a taste) of the contents of that school skirt. They moved from customer to customer every minute or so, so everyone got the chance to dally with their favourite.

For this privilege, however, we were expected to line the girls’ garters with ฿20 notes - while it’s not going to break the bank, it still rang a faint alarm somewhere in my mind - I hope that pay-per-show doesn’t become the norm any time soon. One slightly worse-for-wear American tourist later confessed to me that in the dim light, he’d mistakenly donated ฿1,000 notes instead of ฿20s. Ouch.

Just after 1am, the girls came out in new outfits for what looked like another round of shows, only for the bar to suddenly close due to a police presence outside. I’ll certainly be going back for another look soon - recommended.

[Update: I've been back several times since and never seen a repeat of that show, but perhaps I was just unlucky. On the plus side, Beer Lao is a bargain ฿115 per bottle, and a number of Belgian beers including Kwaak and Hoegaarden are now available here.]

Rainbow 1 review

Rainbow 1 front Ah, the original, and possibly best. On your right-hand side as you wander into Nana Plaza, Rainbow 1 is where the Rainbow bars all began. Walk inside, and if you’re early enough, you’ll be met by anything up to 150 gogo girls. This bar rocks.

Beer is ฿125 all night, not the cheapest bar but you get what you pay for. Like the other Rainbow bars, there’s no nudity, no gimmicks, no shows, and no discounts. Just wall-to-wall hotties, and perhaps that’s enough.

You can’t visit Nana Plaza without visiting at least one of the Rainbow bars!

Spice Girls review

Back on Soi Cowboy again, I popped into Spice Girls on a whim after noticing that draft beer is available for just ฿70 all night - an excellent deal, and amongst the cheapest in the street.

It’s now one of the bigger bars, having absorbed Cowboy One bar, and the mirrors make it look even larger than it is. The stage is now positioned centrally, and features a mirrored floor. Those familiar with Nana Plaza’s Pretty Lady bar will be well aware of the importance of getting ringside seats here.

As in The Led Light Man’s other bars, topless dancing seems to be the norm here. There’s a small glass ceiling a la Baccara, through which girls dancing upstairs could be viewed, if there were any up there…

Bar Bits

Recruiting. Every company has to do it and no one has to recruit more frequently than owners of bars that employ women of the night. We always want more women. As I stated before in previous posts that everyone assumes that getting hot women for a beer bar or go go bar is easy. It’s not - especially for a couple of white guys who are still learning Thai. So that means we constantly have to go recruiting. Tough job folks but we deal with it.

Queen’s Castle 2 review

Wandering, for reasons I’m not about to explain, around Patpong on my own one evening, I thought I’d do the honourable thing and at least visit one of the bars. After all, it was more than a year since my last visit - maybe things had improved since then.

They have not. I chose Queen’s Castle 2 purely because it was the only bar selling beer for less than ฿100. A poor choice? Definitely.

One of the King’s Group bars, Queen’s Castle does offer the infamous “shows” of Patpong, but these seem to be no longer exclusive to Patpong (more on that here).

Anyway, I went up the stairs into the bar, sat down and ordered a Singha, and gazed in horror at the “girls” this place had to offer. Not a pretty bunch, I’m afraid.

Oh no, the show’s starting. And a portly Thai woman of at least 50 takes to the stage, armed with a blowpipe and a handful of lawn darts. She has a pretty decent range, I must admit, but it’s still something of a grotesque experience. Other feats follow, before she slopes off to beg the other customers for tips. I finish my beer and leave, never to return…

Shark review

Shark bar, Soi Cowboy, Bangkok

Shark is up on the north side of Soi Cowboy, next door to Baccara. A standard vanilla gogo bar, there are some real lookers here.

The Shark girls wear similar flimsy skirts and bikini tops to the girls in Nana Plaza’s Pretty Lady, but with the difference that in Shark, unfortunately, they do wear panties under those skirts. And similarly to Baccara, there’s a glass ceiling through which you can see the girls dancing upstairs. Unlike Baccara though, there weren’t any girls dancing upstairs, and the glass ceiling was so grimy that you wouldn’t have been able to see much anyway. Get the Windolene out, guys!

There are a couple of pool tables upstairs, but last time I asked, the girls weren’t allowed to come and play with me unless I paid the ฿500 bar-fine. There also seems to be a short-time room in case you don’t want to take your girl all the way to a hotel (a trip of maybe 100 yards)!

Worth a visit, there are some really attractive girls here, and the pool tables are a nice touch. Just don’t expect to see any flesh.

Mango Weekly - 18 June 2006

A very rainy week in Bangkok but business maintained for the most part thanks to the World Cup. The World Cup is just beginning and the fever burns hotter every day. The Group qualifying rounds will come to an end soon and then single elimination time. I have to say that the English fans are by far the most serious and seem to be pinning the greatest hopes on their team being victorious. It will be a mess if England loses or wins for that matter but I think a victory will mean less broken furniture so go England!
