Sometimes I refer to Thailand/Bangkok as the Twilight Zone. Meaning the normal rules of the world just don’t apply sometimes. Let me highlight for you a few examples to justify my position on this.
Elivs. In any other part of the world if someone were to walk around dressed like a non-performing Elvis look a like he would usually attract some level of attention. In fact the Lan Kwai Fong (the famous nightlife spot for expats with too much money and arrogant Chinese girls looking for rich boyfriends) area of Central Hong Kong is home to an Elvis impersonator who makes his living by singing off-key Elvis songs using the same melody coupled with 3-4 different lyrics from famous Elvis songs. Both the locals and the expats always get a kick when he walks by. I usually paid him just to go away since I truly loved Elvis and cannot handle a HK Chinese pretending to look like my idol. Back to my point. I was hanging in the Soi 7 beergarden yesterday reading the IHT and nursing my diet coke when I spotted him - an Elvis impersonator not in an Elvis outfit but dressed to kill none the less. You can picture it. Jet black hair with the big scoop in the front married to a huge set of lambchops that seemed to reach down to his ankles. He was wearing some sort of white alligator skin half boot/half dress shoe shoe. Hell if I know what to call them-sansaboots? He was wearing black polyester sansabelt pants - yes you know the kind but it was the shirt that really got me. It was a polyester, somewhat see through, white shirt with a black leopard print pattern. Yes - long sleeve with a big collar. Remember it is hot in Bangkok right now and Soi 7 beergarden only has fans. Just the hint of seeing his naked torso underneath was enough to remind me that today was not the day to have my first meal at Soi 7. Ever been to Vegas? You know those cheap ass big black goldrimmed glasses you can pick up on the street so you too can look like Elvis - he was wearing those. Indoors. What a sight. But given that Bkk is the Twilight Zone and even further to the point that the Soi 7 beergarden is the heart of it - no one gave the guy a second glance. In fact he was getting so little attention that he started talking like Elvis and even waving to the disinterested crowd like he was greeting his fan base before a concert. I almost fell off my stool. Elvis gets no love.

Ratchada is a big place with many different venues - thai discos, massage parlours, clubs and eateries. I am going to start out right away by saying it may not be your scene at all but I think it is worth checking out both for some food, rubdowns and the partying. I have two suggestions for the best way to experience Ratchada to ensure you have a good time. Take at least one of your buddies with you so that it is at least two of you exploring together that way you will not feel like the lone ranger. In fact 3-4 of you is even better. Or barfine your favourite girl from one of the ICC and have her take you there. Usually they will have been before but if not they will actually enjoy going since it is more there scene anyway. Also this is a good oppurtunity to state one of the other angles for meeting chicks in Thailand. As you frequent your local 7/11, Department Store, legit massage place and so on you might find yourself chatting up a cutie who although is not a working girl is interested in meeting Farang men. If you happen to get some digits or have an oppurtunity to ask her out you can say that you want to check out Ratchada Soi 4(2,6,8,10) and you need her to take you. If things have been progressing nicely she will probably say okay. Get on it.

I have been in and out of Thailand for 5 years now. Prior to leaving Hong Kong and moving to Thailand I had taken about 50+ trips to Thailand. So many that I just stopped counting because I knew I would move here eventually to sort this place out on my own terms. So between running the bar, going to Thai school, and trying to stay sane I tend to keep myself pretty busy. Add to that the blog, the book project and sleep I am probably the busiest I have ever been but enjoying my life more than I ever have in the past.

Last day in Pattaya.
As I sit down to write, there is a 24 year old beauty I barfined last night from a place called Heavan Above splayed out and snoring in my bed. Let’s call her Heavan 1. I am leaving Pattaya today and I have mixed feelings about it. First of all if I don’t leave today I think my dick just might fall off. I’ve never been so sore in my life. If it wasn’t for this fact I would consider extending my Pattya tour at least a day but junior needs a forced rest. I can’t believe this is a problem.

First let me update everyone on the Nana Plaza closing time. Yes, it’s still 2:00am and appears to be catching on. It’s kind of lame that the lights in the plaza go off around 1:15 but the bars do stay open until 2:00am. Well, most do anyway. The cost to bars is an extra 10,000 baht per month for this luxury so some have not taken this option yet. The Big Mango is still on the fence.

I had to do some business in Chonburi on Saturday and there was not point in getting that close to Pattaya and not stopping in. Always seems to be easy to find a cheap hotel so I never really worry about making reservations. I tend to check out Soi 13/1 off of Beach Road when I am looking for some cheap digs. So far it has never let me down.
I will say up front that one of my bad habits about visiting Pattaya is I tend to go to the same places. I will try to do better in the future about hitting new spots and exploring some more but sometimes I just enjoy going to the places I already know. Moving on.

Been busy. The bar has been hopping and have been out and about a bit and not online.
For after hours clubbing Sukumvit Soi 1 is the place to be. I used to like the small club hidden on Soi 11 but it is just too small and hard to get a drink sometimes. Soi 1 seems to be open late every night, alcohol is flowing and there is even some snack food. The only complaint is the really drunk people who tend to get out of hand in the wee hours of the morning. My friend told me that the Sin club on Soi 4, top floor, also has been opening up late the last few weeks. The actual club club on the second floor appears to not be re-opening. Which is a bummer - I rather liked it but my guess is the Nana Disco people figured some way to keep that new scene from getting going. Trying to investigate this more.
I had a one-night run to Pattaya and will write about that soon.
carry on.

It was a funny evening since the police were still deciding going into the afternoon whether or not bars could serve booze but by around 6-7 most of Nana, Soi Cowboy and Soi 4 got going. However most bars were pouring your beer into glasses and you had to pay your bill as you go which meant there was still a possibility the police could have called it a night but they never did. Good stuff.
